You do realise that after we played down there a couple of times, we asked to have regular 'away' games in Tas (regular Nth V Rich in Hobart), but the Tasmanians said no and refused to have us back...because it was too popular! (too many locals attended, so they got less tourism $$$)

Is that actually true ?
Weird lot down in Tassie, it seems

Yeah.

From the perspective of the people putting the money in, it makes sense though.

They invest in North games in order to generate tourism, and while someone driving in from out of town might spend a few bucks, people coming in from interstate (hotels, restaurants, cabs, visiting other places while they're there, etc.) generate a hell of a lot more money.

15K crowd with 5K from interstate is a lot better in their eyes than a sell out with only 1K travelling, and because they're the ones paying the bills, they have 'influence'.

The problem is the double up games. It’s a joke that in 2021 some teams have an easier fixture in a national game. Either play every team once, or play every team twice.

How I would do it:

Every team plays each other once. That’s it. Every team finishes where they deserve. If you played a team at home one year, you play away the following year.

Next, so we get more football is to copy playoffs from our American friends.

Finals 1st vs 8th, 2nd vs 7th, 3rd vs 6th, 4th vs 5th.

Every team now plays a best of 3 against the following team. Highest ranking team gets first and third game, if needed, at home, and the lower ranking team gets one game at home. Highest ranking team plays lowest ranking team until there are two teams left.

Hell if it is needed to appease the Vics, you could make game 3 has to be at the MCG or something.

Sometimes teams can have an ‘off’ game and the best team doesn’t always go to the next round in finals. Doing it this way, teams can redeem themselves. Adjust tactics for following games. Build better rivalries. Less would have/could have/

It would be a much fair competition, much more deserving winners, and many more finals games so more money. Everyone wins.

Imagine how incredibly boring a best of 3 series between 1v8 and 2v7 would be every year.. Terrible suggestion.

Less so when Hobart gets the Giants and Suns. Doesn't attract a large number of tourists or locals.

Definitely a sweet spot there with the Dees, Swans and Cats types though that will have both tickets available for tourists and get a decent crowd overall to market successful community engagement.
