Objectively I thought it was a poor game standard wise from both sides, but that’s what you’d expect from two bottom 4 teams.

That said, I thought it was great to see a clear and distinct style that we’re aiming for. Considering that it was our youngest team since 2005 I can almost say with certainty that there will be teething problems with such a young side.

But we’ll ride the bumps with a grin, I’m excited to see where this young group can go.

Many thanks! Absolutely love this story - has gone from 'he'll never play a game' to trouncing NicNat and Gawn's HTA stats and being on par with Grundy's HTW and HTA. For those decrying why we didn't go recruiting state league rucks on the weekend - I'm pretty damn content with Reeves!
And he has done it against one of, if not the best tap ruckmen of the last decade

stephenson might be one the more stupid players in the AFL from a game sense but it really shows, some of the things he did really hurt North.

Does anyone know if any IQ tests come into play at draft time?

other than losing the clearances by a landslide in the first quarter, the fumbling and some errant handballs throughout the game, it was a competitive game of footy.

Defence: we seemed to do well here, with only the opponent midfielders running through, Goldstein who has been a good player for ages and Larkey getting on top in a handful of moments, other than that Hardwick got into Zurhaars head and he put him off his game, CJ intercept marked or intercepted poss and provided run and carry, DGB did a good job of putting pressure on opponents body and got a few poss in the last quarter where his disposal is quite good, Frost was amazing with his Kamikaze defending and he didnt turn the ball over too much, Sicily is back, he did turn the ball over a few times, but having him in the side was great, Maginness was ok in general, turned the ball over a few times but provided run in the last quarter and made up for it with his first goal, Scrimshaw was great for most of the game with a couple of errors late in the game.

Midfield: i really like the idea of playing a bunch of mids and rotating them through there, when we did get bogged down in there it didnt last long as another group of mids would go in there and provide a different dynamic, our first quarters are an issue, losing 6-0 in centre clearances ect, but thankfully the Roos didnt take advantage of that and we were able to secure the win, Mitchell had a solid game with a few errors in judgement at times giving away frees and 50's, Shiels was solid and worked hard, Phillips ended up with a few goal assists and was decent, Worpel had a couple of good moments, but struggled overall, Morrison was decent, Nash tried hard and had to put in minutes as the backup ruck, Ward had some clean moments and moments of good decision making and execution of skill, Reeves battled out the game as our main ruck when Lynch went down, Newcombe went in there at times and looked good as a player who can burst through and kick with good penetration, also our kicking to leads was great have not seen much of that in recent years, so already an improvement.

Forward: having a smaller forwardline was great, leaving Lewis and Gunston space to do their thing in the air which was a highlight of the game, the way they dominated the aerial contests in our forwardline was great to watch, Moore was busy linking play and putting pressure and tackling opponents, Wingard came to life in the last and kicked the winning goals of the game, Newcombe's penetrating kicks, big mark and leading were a highlight as well, JOM struggled in the forwardline but was physical in the contest at times, MacDonald had some good moments where his handball would free a player, there was 1 play where MacDonald had 3 clean handballs and everyone else around him was fumbling or disposing of it in a fumbly way, i can see why they call him silk at times.

Need to do something about our slow starts. Two preseason games and now an AFL outing with a poor showing in the first quarter. Good teams will spank us.
Poor showing in the first quarter starts with the centre clearances. I'd play Nash at the centre clearances and rotate players around him. He seems to read the play really well and is on top of whoever gets the ball before they can dish it out cleanly.

I don't mind the long sleeves but couldn't quite believe that Wingard had chosen yesterday to wear them. It was a really hot day and we were just sitting in the stands. Talk about stubbornly sticking to a plan!
Was the ball pumped up too much? Seemed like they were playing with super ball out there, constantly bouncing off people's chests and hands. Bizarre given the perfect conditions. Happy to get the win, but I'm sure as hell not rushing back to watch the replay.
According to Sam it was really slippery because of the humidity. Funny thing is it looks better in the replay to my mind - you get more of a sense of why things have happened. High up in the stands it looked pretty horrendous at times - lots of groaning laughter from the crowd.

Anyway, loved being back there. Bring on round 2!

I’m guessing that North poster in our preview thread is glad that CJ was so under done.

😂
In mitigation, there's a thread on the main board about the team of the week, and a North fan posted anyone who doesn't include CJ in their team obviously didn't watch the game.

He looks like Kane Cornes all of a sudden. it's really weird.
lmao. Enough of this. Sicily's face looks exactly the same, it's just that his hair at the top/fringe is a little different. Used to be longer with a curl, yesterday it was shorter so straighter.

this has all been covered but ill throw my 2 bob in anyway.

moore played a brilliant hf game. 'elite' you could say. it's not called the graveyard shift for nothing.

Newc - imposed himself in the second half & was a handful up fwd. what a find this bloke is. if he can add some fwd craft to his bow we are laughing.

Lewis - penny drop for the big fella. 13.5km covered. work rate & intensity is all we want, the rest will follow. loved his game.

Gunners - love having you back. class.

MacDonald- clean & a great decision maker. 25 games time the rest of the comp will notice. Lloyd knows.

Reevesy going well. big effort.

I'm craving more youth. get Day in.

I thought Nash did a very good job for the team by sacrificing his game to help
Reeves in the ruck after Lynch went off. Nash evened up the contests he was in
and allowed Reeves a much needed breather. Another string to his bow.

Definitely has enough strings to his bow, hopefully he can keep added to his game, would be good to have a tall, strong defensive midfielder to add to our midfield.

Can someone check on robbo? 3/8 of his likes for the round were praise/sympathy for the hawks
Who were the players he singled out?

Not that we should be singling out any Hawthorn players

Important he stays in if we are only going with Lewis, Gunston and a 2nd ruck. It is a good option to have if a tall goes down as we can sort of keep a structure. If Nash wasn't there Lewis would have had to chop out in the ruck

Ah, footy at the MCG, a warm day, a decent crowd and a good win - who could ask for more?

1. A couple of early problems: no parking at the MCG and hundreds of people looking for car parks - thanks, MCG Trust. And most Food outlets closed, with long queues at the open ones - thanks, AFL.

2. The best part of being at the game, no stupid commentators to listen to.

3. The early deficit was really caused by turnovers and errors, basically it was players trying too hard. And I was impressed by the fightback late in the 2nd quarter, which continued into the 3rd and 4th. It was hard work in the heat and humidity, and it was a team effort - that’s all we want from a Hawthorn team.

4. A couple of young players got into the action. Jai Newcombe shows a lot of promise, early days.

5. Jack Gunston doing what Jack Gunston does: very dangerous up front and then takes a saving mark in defence. He’s back.

And we had only 2 premiership players out there, but 2 more than Norf have seen in 20 years.

Go Hawks

I like that we won and that we dug ourselves out of a bit of a hole but… north were poor.

Gunston and Lewis had very favourable matchups and not much pressure through the midfield. A nice game to be a forward. Our backs worked well but again Nth fwds hardly a frightening proposition.

We will find out a lot more this week. Port are a good team but not a bad time to get them - seem to be starting the season slowly and a few injuries. I don’t expect to win but a competitive showing interstate would tell us more than yesterday did.

I like the mixing up of the midfield. Suspect some is necessity from players being underdone but also some accelerated development of youth and building versatility in the older bunch.

Losing would have been concerning. We did the job but the next 2-3 weeks will tell us much more about where we are at.
you've taken the words out of my mouth.

Good to get a win but I'm in no way expecting us to beat good sides after seeing that. Hopefully a lot can be attributed to rust. I expect north will be a bottom 4-6 side and they were majorly hampered by injuries yesterday. We need to lift still, despite getting the win on Sunday.

Next week will be a much tougher test.

They are just like every other hospitality business at the moment

Yup - low unemployment figures and the country only just opening up makes it hard to fill hospitality positions. Every restaurant or cafe I go to the last 2-3 months I hear it a lot about how smashed they are because there is so many shifts to fill.

Hope they can get the staffing up soon because there's a Gami Chicken right near my members bay!

Not since dipper and rioli can i say when he tackles u it hurts. Beware the mighty Nash

There was a Newcombe tackle yesterday that would have folded an NRL player in half and hurt them. He and Nash might strike a whole lot of fear in opposing midfielders soon enough.
