With all due respect to Horne, it's his first AFL game, and you simply cannot compare him to the player of the ilk of Cunnington at this stage. He had 15 clearances that day. Cant see Horne doing that in his first game.
Cunnington only had 13 clearances but, you're right - JH-F is unlikely to dominate in the way that both Simpkin and Cunnington did. My point is that we cannot let North take control of the clearances as they did in Rd 8 last year. If Simpkin gets 14 again and LDU gets another 11, JH-F only has to get 4 or 5 and we are in serious trouble. Goater may also get a chance in the rotations.

Hopefully Reeves can nullify Goldstein. Will be the key.

Cunnington won't but JHF will and he will be keen to show why he was #1 in the draft. He has been playing with men in the SANFL so won't be intimidated.
Mate, you may have bought into the hypetrain a little if you think he's going to step straight in to senior AFL footy and dominate the centre bounces.

He's a talent, but he's going to be a bit hit and miss for a couple of years at least.

He was hardly dominating the SANFL and theres a huge gap between SANFL and VFL let alone AFL.

Only once had more than 5 clearance in a game, he's not going to come in and rank in the stats.

Occasionally a first gamer has real impact but I agree, he unlikely to be a major threat. My point is that he doesn't have to be if we let Simpkin and LDU off the leash as we did last time. He just has to make a contribution.

Agreed, I mean, he's hardly Ward...

This will be my team for Round 1, assuming that Impey and Day miss. CJ misses and we could see Morris or DGB.

B: Hardwick, Hartigan, Sicily

HB: Jiath, Frost, Scrimshaw

C: Morrison, O'Meara, Ward

HF: Wingard, Koschitzke, Moore

F: Gunston, Lewis, Breust

FOL: Reeves, Mitchell, Worpel

INT: McEvoy, Newcombe, MacDonald, Bramble, Maginness (Sub)

EMG: Nash, Grainger-Barras, Howe, Shiels.
Why is it most who put up a team selection have Shiels as emergency? I respect and rate him to the equal of Tom Mitchell. What more doe shiels have to do to get win respect from supporters. hard nosed never beaten does multipule jobs from run with to racking up possesions through mid field.

You rate Liam Shiels as highly as Tom Mitchell? Jog on!

If there has ever been a first year player capable of dominating clearences from day 1 its JHF.

From all reports he is doninating Norths mids in their scratch matches. Those same mids who dominated us (sans Cunnington).

Reeves, Newcomb, Nash, Ward and McDonald are key to our revolution.

Watched some Hawks vs Tigers 2021 the other day. They made our mids look like bush footballers at centre bounces at times. It was laughable, like a traing drill.

Will be interesting to see how we fare against the 2024 premiers 🙂

Round 1 always throws up some curly results.
I certainly wont be filled with dread if we get done , but Im pretty confident we arent as average as a lot of outsiders seem to think .

Hoping we cant slot Ward and Macdonald in but its competitive for spots.
Think we do need Hartigan for this one , so may be hard to get DGB in .
Sicily / Gunston are huge ins , somewhat again underrated outside .

Some nice problems to have. Great to finally feel we are in the home stretch for some footy !!!!!

Whilst I do agree, JHF is doing it against the wooden spooners from last season. It doesn't mean it will automatically translate to Brownlow votes against real opposition.

In saying that, the forgotten man in this thread is Tarryn Thomas. He's ready to take the competition by storm.

If we break even in the midfield at worst we'll win this.

Not the end of the world if we get done though. In confident we'll be playing a bunch of kids who will show enough in defeat.

Don't go to the North Board then, apparently Frost has no chance of nullifying JHF. 😭

haha, Frost is their match up for him?

I mean, Frosty could only smother Franklin....it's not like the exploits of Bud could compare with the great JHF in his first game?

I watched him in 5-6 sanfl games . Talent yes but its a huge jump to AFL seniors .
I think he will have good games , quite games and I wouldnt be suprised if he gets a few games in the ressies .

He most likely becomes a gun but there is a chance he may have hit near his ceiling as well.

Im very happy with who we drafted

I’m not here to argue or make predictions. Just wanted to make 3 points:

1: I watched JHF in the SANFL most weeks last year. I agree that his clearance play looked promising for a young player. But certainly not dominant. He clearly looked like he had the tools to be good in there, but that didn’t really translate to a large number of clearances.

2: In the back half of the year North were one of the best teams out of the Center in the comp. Simpkin was 9th best over the year but best for a large period of the the backend.

3: I’ve watched 3 genuine scratch matches this year and JHF has been shockingly amazing out of the centre. Just focusing on that one aspect he has surprised me how good he’s been going given that as we agree, he just looked promising last year. He had 5 yesterday from maybe a qrt all up in the guts. And would have been 10ish each in the first 2. Going up against our best mids.

Im not here trying to brag, argue etc. just stating what I’ve seen.

Onto the match, someone mentioned our backline as our biggest issue. I agree. Aside from Hall maybe missing, Im nervous about our ability to defend, particularly medium and smalls.

Agree with all that. But I'm telling you now, Cunnington is the one that dines out on our midfield every time.
Horne will be a gun, and sympathies for his illness, but I've got comfort knowing Cunners won't be running out against us this time.
