Based on the preseason reports and positions players are training in:

B: Sicily Blanck Weddle
HB: Amon Scrimshaw D’Ambrosio
C: Jiath Nash MacDonald
HF: Watson Chol Moore
F: Ginnivan Lewis Hardwick
Fol: Reeves Day Newcombe
Int: Worpel Impey Ward Gunston
Sub: Breust
Very unlucky: BMac, Mackenzie, Ramsden

Breust won’t be sub but I like the idea of the old timer coming on fresh when the opposition defenders are tired. Watson or Ginnivan more likely.

Frost could start ahead of Scrim but we seemed to have good success with Blanck/Sic/Scrim late in the season, and Scrim is reportedly having his best preseason with us.

don't mind that side

I’d be surprised if Watson starts Rd 1 unless he knocks it out of the park in pre season. I think McDonald will take that resting forward/midfield rotation spot and McKenzie will be in the starting lineup.

Croc will likely start on the bench and be deployed wherever needed.

I can see this forward setup R1.

Breust, Chol, Ginnivan/Butts/Wizard
Gunston, Lewis, Moore

Hardwick as a forward doesn’t really make any sense. At least not now. Butler is having a good pre-season so far and could be best 22 next year, Watson & Ginnivan coming in, plus Bennetts and O’Sullivan in the reserves. We have good small forward depth for the first time in three years. Hardwick is too good of a defender to move away from that defensive 50. I do like the idea of Jiath on the wing.

Yeah, I see it (Hardwick training up forward) more as giving us the flexibility to make switches during games. He is our best lock down small defender and we have a huge amount of forwards as you say, plus Wingard set to return, so he must be up for playing a lot back. But the talk about Maginness makes sense, if we need to switch him back to find a spot that could be an opportunity to throw Hardwick forward, and that might allow CMac/Moore etc to drift into midfield etc. I also expect Jiath, Weddle, Amon, Impey, Seamus etc to be doing a lot of switching between wing and half back, to the point it might be hard to work out who are permanent wings are. If we make it so many players have an extra position they can play we'll be all the better for it.

Can't see D'Ambrosio lining up round 1. Seamus, Serong, Finn and BMac are all backline options with more credits in the bank. People are saying we need Massimo's kicking skills in our backline, as if James Sicily and Karl Amon aren't already two of the best in the competition. Scrimshaw is no slouch either. I hope Massimo becomes a great player, but for now he hasn't really done anything.

If there's a player with fabulous kicking skills who we would shoehorn into the side, it's Cam Mackenzie.

A good indicator that McKenzie knows he belongs will be when he rolls back off the mark and casually slots the goal.
He has the goods now just needs the mind set.

Newspaper line ups have no moving parts.

Sams whiteboard formations will have multiple moving parts.

Besides being in a position at a centre square bounce, line ups have little to no resemblance of the formation being played.
I can still see Amon lining up on the wing, got a year under his belt at Hawthorn and knows the drill. He will be one of the important links out of the back line, hence training with them, breaking the lines with his left foot. Don't see him playing deep or set defensive spot.

I'm calling it now.

Scrimmers is in for a very big year in 2024.

I'm talking AA squad worthy level.

Nice problem to have, but I must add, you cannot have too many good kicks in the team.
I know we are not allowed to compare but in the three peat era, EVERYBODY could kick.
Sam wants good kicks. He implored List Management to get him. Don’t be surprised. The one thing though he must improve is his other defensive skills.

Saw signs late last year that he understands what is required.

If you combine application with his level of talent then like I said AA squad / top 3 finish in B&F is within his reach.

I'm a big wrap for this kid.
What position you playing him & what did your Back 6 (+ Bench Player) look like?

I'm giving him first crack at CHB.

My vision is of him developing into an attacking CHB in a Peter Dean/Paul Roos mould.

Amon. Scrimshaw. Sicily.

Impey. Blank. Weddle.

Bench - Mitchell/Frost

Above is assuming pre season reports of Amon to Half Back and Hardwick to forward line eventuate.

It is all about consistent application. He has the ability. The coaches and his team mates know he has the tools. They were frustrated with his inconsistency last year.

If it doesn't eventuate I will happily wear the scorn at end of next season.

But I feels it in bones, there is a Scrimstorm a brewing.......
All good, I'm just taking the piss. Everyone should be backing him in. Big things coming for Scrim in 2024.

Maginness as a lockdown defender seems like the biggest no brainer for mine. As an elite tagger it’s what he does.
Him at half back completely blanketing the half forward (forcing them to lead to the other flank rather than the wing) or half forward completely blanketing the rebounding defender

As great as Maginess has been in that tagging role, jury is out as to whether that role will be there every week as we move up the ladder. Makes sense that he works on another position in pre season.

FWIW, if the sub rule changes and we get 5 on the bench. Having a full time tagger in Finn is a no brainer for mine.

He was tried there several times towards to end of the season.
I only really recall Hardwick playing up forward the first game against Essendon, and it was only for the last quarter, where he looked to be our best forward kicking 2 goals and unlucky not to get a 3rd. That seemed to be the end of the experiment for the season.
