Autopsy Round 1, 2025 vs GWS @ MCG

There should be a 25k stadium for us junk clubs to be play the interstaters, would be sick.
Let's build one in the middle of Caufield race course

It's actually true though, us North Saints and Dogs should be forced to play interstate clubs at a minnow ground where we belong. Atmosphere would be 100x better than the G

Turn the track into the carpark for match days. Works for everyone. 🤗
Then we can sit on the boundary toot the horn and throw Tinnies at the back of Oliver's head like the good old days

Aa long as there’s a bit for MCC members I’d be totally fine with it.
Agree, we wouldn't be caught dead sitting with the common rabble. We need our crappy club for jerks.

Yeah, saw that ending coming from a mile off, just like the Carlton final a couple of years ago. Honestly, though, I'm happier with that performance than I have been with a lot of our wins over the past couple of years. I thought a lot of the new faces gave us some cause for optimism, and I thought there were signs there that we're going to be willing to try something a bit different game-style wise. GWS are clearly a better team than us, but I think they're better than at least 16 teams in this league, so that's nothing to slit our wrists over.

And I know this isn't a good / bad / ugly thread, but I'm used to writing reviews that way so that's what I'll do here.

Good:

  • Lindsay close to BOG for mine. His composure for a rookie is incredible, and he's tougher in the contest than I was expecting too.
  • Great to see that Petracca's not showing any lingering effects from his injury. I think splitting his time evenly between forward and mid is going to see his numbers down a bit this year, but I think he's more valuable to the team this way.
  • I was skeptical about the Windsor move to defence, but it worked well today. Obviously the idea is to have him playing as an attacking half-back who's given permission to leave his man and to run to receive the ball from behind, and I think today he gave us a bit of speed through the corridor and quality delivery into the forward 50 that we've been missing. Teams are going to latch onto what's happening pretty quickly though, so he'd better enjoy the freedom while he can.
  • All three KPDs were good today.
  • I think the whipping-boy Sparrow deserves some credit for his game too.
  • Really liking the pick-ups of Henderson and AJ. Clearly they're never going to be A-graders, but they're good enough to come in and immediately slot into roles where we lack quality alternatives (i.e. small forward, and forward-ruck hybrid). Henderson is a lot more agile than I had thought, and AJ got his hands to a hell of a lot of entries today, so I'm looking forward to see how he goes with a drier ball.
  • People are complaining about the slow, chippy ball movement out of defence, but I much perfer that to the long dump-kick to Gawn that we've been doing out of defence for the last 4 years. Kicking long to a contest and allowing GWS to sling shot the ball is exactly what they wanted, so I think we were right to try to deny them that. I think there was also the clear plan to work the ball slowly up the ground and then try to put a bit of speed on it once we got to the wing, and while this didn't always work, I thought our play today still seemed a bit more dynamic than it has for most of the past 4 years.

Bad:

  • Forward set-up too crowded, stodgy, structureless and top-heavy. Pickett would have made a big difference today, but otherwise I don't see much sign that our forward-50 issues from recent years have been fixed.
  • Midfield was smashed. Giants really good at winning clearances from Gawn and creating spread with their handballs, which is something we never seem able to do. Oliver was poor, Viney was average. I'm not sure what Langdon's role is supposed to be at the moment, but I don't think it's working.

Ugly:

  • Making Langford the sub on his debut. Plus I'm not sure it was the right move to bring him on to play a midfield role when the midfield was already being beaten for pace. Think bringing him on for Jefferson and playing him up forward might have been a better option.
  • We're now 1-6 in our last 7 games decided by a goal or less. Three of those have been losses to GWS. o_O
Good analysis. jVR was poor and forward line a ahambles. Too crowded but I do think fritz needed to lead and create space. He was a bit stagnant.

I thought Oliver was ok. Not poor. We rightly have high expectations but not sure we'd get much more from others and I want to give him time this year.

Salem did ok and got into position. Used the ball well enough just too slow and held up the game every time he touched it. He would be so much better with quick decisions.

Langdon and Rivera played good games but were wasted. They need to run and deliver. The kids are good but we cannot rely on them to be our best ball users.

Pickett would have made a huge difference. Tmac / petty did well enough to cover for May in those conditions.

I felt we let that one go but wasn't as disappointed as I expected. gWS were better last week but we still held our own and many positive signs if coach can get it right.

Ugly: a few years ago I felt confident we would win the close ones. We just seemed to get over the line and not lose control. As an old Melbourne member it was a very foreign feeling for me and I got to experience how fans of other successful clubs feel. Proud and determined until the end. The last couple years l slumped back to that all too familiar pessimistic dees fan. At the game on Sunday near the end I am ashamed to say I expected us to lose even when we held a lead. I tell my kids it builds character but I don't believe it anymore.

This idea was floated years ago, princes Park and punt Rd were suggested. Wouldn't be possible now. Bulldogs do play some games at Ballarat.

Found this article along the same lines.

Don't understand the crowd thing, thought it would be worse given the F1 started about 15 mins before hand. Know I watched the game after that. Add on the weather I am surprised we got above 10k

Disappointing game from Fritsch. He was threatening in the 4th to snag a goal we desperately needed be he was a step off. Looked slow in his decisions and evasiveness.
He always appears to me to be protecting himself from most contact. This is always a concern, don't know when we can trust him to go full 100%.
I would like to se how Langford goes at HFF. He might be an option when fritsch doesn't feel up to it.

In typical Jake Lever fashion, after the Jake Bowey goal (that he signalled touched to his teammates) he takes the opportunity to scream at the top of his lungs 'toooouuuuuuccchhed, it was effin touuuchhhhhed' so the entire field could hear it and half the stadium. The complete lack of footy IQ and game sense of this guy is mystifying and infuriating. Good player but decision making and footy IQ is horrendous. You can tell your teammates to prepare to set up a zone without screaming 'TOUCCHHHHEEEDDD' louder than the Taylor swift concert.

Also, late in the last quarter, deciding to kick it sideways 10m to Viney instead of going inside 50m was an absolute brain fade. It was obviously called play on and arguably cost us the game. No more or less than any other big moment in the last 5 minutes but that one stood out.

How do you know how loudly he said it?

Good leadership to set us up after what appeared to be a behind. Don't think anything Lever did would have changed the outcome after Bowey (fairly) gave it away.
