Absolutely. Imagine the overall benefit to the club, if we could snaffle the number one pick. Much rather have a Gibbs, Rayner, Cadman or JHF type added to the list instead of increased memberships, big crowds, retaining players, attracting players, finals football, enjoyment of success, etc.... ;)
We already have a Rayner type.

Number 1 picks sell memberships.

Haven’t you noticed, ever since we drafted Cam, our membership and crowds have grown year on year.

Coincidence? I think not.

Think the long trip has equalled us being extra cautious with Lachie.

Get Dev in and give Cam more midfield time. Our system and effort needs to win this - the team is bigger than any one player.

Interesting parallels already with our 2021 season. ACL very early to a key player, lose at home in round 1 and Lachie with a back issue.

If Neale is out I think we can cover with Lyons, although the Freo midfield is a powerful unit. It’s a good test for the team, travelling and looking to bounce back.

I think it’ll again mostly be above the shoulders for us this match like last week, provided we can break even in the midfield. Taking those opportunities at goal and make the right choice with the ball. Last week we did lose the ability to slow the game down, which is what we did well last year when teams came at us. Hope to improve this week

Yeah it's hard to read too much into that team. Extended bench includes Bailey as well.
Wouldn't surprise really. Maybe Lachie's pre emptive words signalled an attitude shift from above.

Some of our guys will be really fired up to do well this week . Especially any new faces. Expecting a strong win.

Wonder if they'll give Tunstill a run.

Suspect the bench will be:
Bailey
Ah chee (ahead of lohman)
Answerth
Dev (ahead of tunstill)
Payne key back emergency
Fort ruck emergency
Tunstill sub given midfield now weakened

Extended bench >

[1] Kai Lohmann,[2] Deven Robertson,[4] Callum Ah Chee,[29] James Tunstill,[32] Darcy Fort,[33] Zac Bailey,[40] Jack Payne,[43] Noah Answerth.

I would go with >

Kai Lohmann, Dev Robertson, Callum Ah Chee, Zac Bailey... James Tunstill(sub)

Dockers side looks pretty good on paper, somebody needs to stick with Frederick this time, also reports coming out of Perth have been that Nat Fyfe has been flying this pre season.

Hopefully the bench will be:

Bailey, Ah Chee, Fort and Tunstill

This gives McInnerney some support and allows us to rest a ruckman forward if we want to give that a shot.

Payne deserves to be dropped and Gardiner goes back where he belongs - in defence.

Lyons was great last week and the inclusion of Robertson helps to bolster the midfield. McKenna is a big inclusion and I’m really expecting Wilmot to stand up. He has so much flair and courage for such a young man, this year could really be the making of him.

Dev would have to be Superman to bolster the midfield unless you have him as the sub and he comes on early 3KZ.

I don’t mind Robertson getting midfield minutes. I love his aggression and honesty as a footballer. Clearly Rayner will get more time in the midfield rotations. My maths would be:
Robertson and Rayner < Neale … but not by much. Clearly Neale is a massive out, but we can cover him. We are very lucky to have Lyons on our list to step up.

He's not in your selected side though so he's not really going to bolster the midfield this week.

I'm looking forward to seeing a bit of a new look.

Obviously on paper we're a lot worse off but a bit of a shake up mightn't be a bad thing.

Fwiiw I think we're a bit stale on the gameplan and tactics which came apart to some degree last week.

Sure it's the first cluster* game and we got within a kick last year . That's over.

Teams are pretty much on to us now and we have to be good enough to overcome that which means tweaking a few things . Trying a few players and mixing up the roles.

Dev, Cal n Zac I think/hope are locks. The last bench and sub spots are up in the air a bit. Payne or even Fort a chance if Fages is still keen on 3 tall fwds. Gardiner named at fullback may signal we go with just 2. I don't know whether we need the extra sm fwd in Lohmann when we're losing a hb and mid. I don't know that we need an extra mid either with Dev, that pushes Tunstill out. Maybe that opens the door for Answerth. Berry at hb doesn't make a lot of sense either. I'd rather see him on the wing and as a an extra rotation in the middle.

For mine on the bench,
Bailey - plays his usual role
Dev - mid, get in and go hard. Big job for him covering Dunks and JL. He brings a bit of mongrel we need.
Cal - hf, wing. He's a Mr Fixit, another injury down back or a re-occurrance to McKenna and he can slip back.
Answerth - the 7th defender, maybe some time on the wing. Him rotating with McKenna and Wilmot feels a bit more balanced than Zorks, Berry or Ah Chee going back.

Sub - Lohmann, Tunstill, Fort and Payne left on the extended bench. I don't think Fort or Payne. They're there as emergencies only. That leaves Tunstill or Lohmann. Lohmann may give us some extra pace, a bit of X factor yet to be seen, but with Zorks, Charlie, Linc, Rayner, Bailey and Ah Chee fwd I just don't think we need him. I'm leaning towards Tunstill. If JL is proving a bit slow later in the game, he offers some coverage there. He's got that WA mongrel in him too.

Will all mean nothing if attitude and commitment aren't there. Play with some passion, play for each other. I hope the blast from Neale and all the poor press lights a fire under them. If they can't get up for this we're in trouble longer term.

I struggle to see Payne getting dropped. Seems a confidence player that was just hitting his straps when he got injured. Needs a bit of time.

Robertson - Yeah he is. I’d go with this.

FB: Gardiner, Andrews, Starcevich
HB: Wilmot, Lester, McKenna
C: Berry, Lyons, McCluggage
HF: McCarthy, Hipwood, Zorko
FF: Rayner, Daniher, Cameron
FOLL: McInnerney, Dunkley, Robertson
Inter: Bailey, AhChee, Fort, Tunstill

SUB: Lohmann

Berry really needs to lift.

Tbh if he'd been beaten in good contests I would never entertain dropping Jack. It was the manner of how he got beaten which rang alarm bells. Genuinely one of the worst key back performances we've seen in some time.

I think he can and will bounce back, but think he'd be better off working on the fundamentals in the VFL for a week or two.

When does the VFL start if he doesn’t play this weekend?

The fact that he was moved forward is the big concern. Perhaps the difficulties around the injury last year have dented the coaches confidence and willingness to let him find form in the 1s.

Fages has always seemed willing to ride form slumps of certain positions in the 1s.

Bit torn on that one myself . He's really dropped his bundle in most of his recent games.

Obviously getting the Payne back that we had is a massive boost to the team . I think we really don't have a lot of choice to keep playing him unless he costs us games but what the key is to Payne I guess we leave up to those closest to whatever's going on there.

I agree with both of you . In other words who knows.

But last week was just not acceptable tbh unless there's a legit underlying excuse.

He realistically had to go forward.

There is bad form you can work through at AFL level. What Jack brought was lazy, dejected football.

I am certain he and the coaches are aware and he'd like his time back, but it was VERY hard to back in. If he keeps his spot, he'd want to put in a lot more effort if nothing else.

Payne needs to go back to the reserves and learn how to compete on the ground. Like Lester and Gardiner he has to develop the ability to make second and third efforts. Payne’s lack of physicality is alarming.

On a side note, I hope we see a much better performance from Oscar. He won 8 clearances and butchered his opportunities. He went at under 40% - the majority of which were kicks.

If he doesn't get his game in order, it could spell serious trouble for our midfield yet again.
