The day has finally arrived we get to see the Saints go into battle again (NAB preseason bullshit doesn't count).

I hope the boys are fired up to prove everyone wrong, all the clueless nuffies that have picked us for the spoon and say we're a rabble with no good young players.

Melbourne have been made favourites on our home ground FFS, that should be enough to fire them up.

As others have more subtly pointed out , the guy getting subbed off chooses himself. No coach would select them in advance.

Yeah you can't plan the sub too much, someone could go down with an injury in the first quarter and you need to use the sub early for someone you didn't plan on subbing off.

Whilst we need as many midfielders as possible, due to the rotation cap, let's not forget that Jones is currently on the forward flank (as is Saunders), so losing Gilbo does not necessarily mean Seb has to come in; Lee could slot into that HFF spot and allow one of the two aforementioned more midfield time. Such a move may seem like we are going in with too many tall forwards, but Maister is really the only "traditional immobile tall" out of the three currently named KPF's (and even then, he's not too bad), so Lee's inclusion wouldn't really make us "too tall".

Lee, Stanley, Maister and Roo might stretch the Demons back line a bit. (If they all fire would be a bit of concerns for Melb.)

Seb Ross only emergency not playing VFL today, which is normal as always hold one back. Hints at unchanged lineup though

If Maister snags one in the first quarter he will kick a bag.

What's the Saturday night @ Etihad record again? Was probably broken recently but I can't recall us playing many games at that time recently.

Last look at the team.

Really going midfielder heavy, I assume we're gonna try do what 1 or 2 other teams have done so far in the opening round and run over our opponent. Will be interesting to see how we do it considering our sides youth.

Quite an offensive team if you think about. Yes we do have CJ in the forward line along with Saunders, but that's obviously to help with clearances, and as mentioned above, more midfielders = less fatigue per player (hopefully). Really those two "midfielder" slots int he forwardline can be rotated with Ray being a great contested marker for his build and size, and you never know what some of the youngens my show in the forward 50.

The defensive line looks quite offensive aswell, with virtually our entire half-back line being are bound defenders, in Wright, Roberton and Webster. Aswell as having Dempster in the back-pocket who can help with the quick mark and switch/play on.

Still would prefer to give Gilbo an extra week or two, and have Seb Ross come in, with Billings as the sub.

Overall a young side but really, one filled with players that can play multiple roles.
-Newnes listed as on the wing, yet played quite a bit on the HB line last year and did well. Gears is the same, can play defense/mid.
-TC, throw him in the guts or put him as a SF.
-Saunders is the same as TC.
-Fazza Ray, shown he can have an effect on small/mid sized forwards, but can play in the midfield if required and kick a goal if he's asked to.

Good that the main focus is on the youth to develop the ability to play multiple roles, and can't wait to see them in action tonight!

Ive been pretty reserved leading up to this game cos deep down I know its "new coach, few players out, very young inclusions, new game plan, so I shouldn't expect too much and should be happy with us just being competitive"
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! now its actually got to game day and I just cracked my first beer open F**K all that common sense shite!!!!!
C'MON SAINTS LETS KICK THEIR RANGE ROVER DRIVING, SKI LODGE HOLIDAYING ARSE!!!!!!!!!!
GO SAINTERS!!
