It shouldn't be. Our dictionaries are currently being re-written as we pander to people who obviously didn't pay enough attention in school. "I bet you the last time we played against each other" will never be acceptable to me, nor should it be.
Though a consistent and respectable language wouldn't have clangers like "restive" and "pulchritude" which mean precisely the opposite of what they sound like they mean.

A pragmatic approach to linguistics won't bring about the end of the world imo.

If one wishes to verse, let them verse.
