Squads of 25 should be out tonight, this is what I think we'll see:

FB: Cheney Warnock Rivers
HB: Bruce Frawley MacDonald
C: Davey Grimes Trengove
HF: Bate Miller Petterd
FF: Green Garland Maric
FOLL: Jamar Moloney Jones
I/C: Scully Martin Bennell McDonald
Emergencies: Strauss Blease Gysberts

(Obviously Strauss, Blease and Gysberts will be named on the extended bench).

I honestly think we've got a good chance if Warnock can do another job on Roughhead and Mitchell and Hodge don't go berserk. Our forwardline is 'unconventional' but a main reason it isn't really rated is we have been ranked last for inside 50s in the past few years. It is pretty simple, with an average forwardline you just have to get the ball down there as much as possible.

I'll be ridiculously optimistic as usual, Dees by 7 points, Green with 5 goals.

GO YOU MIGHTY DEMONS :thumbsu: :)

Think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head with the lineup!

Only possible change I can see is Strauss coming in for either Cheney, Bennell, or maybe even Garland if we choose to give him another run in the magoos.

Have a good feeling about Saturday, our forward line isn't much to look atbut if they can play like they did against Adelaide we have a shot.

I think it'll be a lot closer than people are thinking/saying. We both have a damn long injury list, but in saying that, I'm gonna say my Hawks by three goals.

Good luck to the Dee's, I've always liked them, I'll be there watching on, so best of luck!!! :thumbsu:

Reading between the lines from what Beamer said on Sport 927 this morning, Strauss will play on Saturday.

I really hope this is the case.

Although he's still young and yet to adapt to the pace of AFL football, his skills will be invaluable in the backline.

When you consider how difficult we found it to get out of defence following an opposition behind last year, having someone who can kick bullets with a great degree of accuracy from the kick-ins will be highly beneficial.

This from the AFL website:

"Melbourne
Top- two draft picks Tom Scully and Jack Trengove look certain to play their first AFL matches, and 2008 NAB AFL draftee James Strauss is likely. Ex-Lion Joel Macdonald will also make his debut for the Demons. With Liam Jurrah (shoulder) sidelined and Jack Watts (back) on the comeback trail, Melbourne will have to rejig its forward line. Lynden Dunn could spend more time in attack and Michael Newton is an outside chance for a call-up."

It's a nice thought......

Watts has only played a half of footy in the last few months, so highly doubtful he would play...needs to get match fitness and prove his place at Casey IMO

I have it from a close source to Strauss that he's a good chance, but not sure yet...maybe they didn't want to give it away but I think he should be named

That's how I'd line up if Sylvia isn't fit, if he is:

HB: Bruce Frawley MacDonald
C: Davey Grimes Sylvia
HF: Bate Miller Petterd
FF: Green Garland Maric
FOLL: Jamar Moloney Jones

Id play both Strauss and Garland, even if Garland is
underdone.

Id rather see us play these exciting players with scope
this year, it at least give us something to get excited about.
I would rather Garland and Strauss show signs underdone
and lose - than see blokes like Cheney bust a nut and
just get us over the line.

Thats just where Im at atm, I know we are going to be
limited and Id prefer to see glimpses of brilliance from players
that could be superstars - than anything else.

I dont care if Watts plays AFL or VFL for the first few rounds,
so long as he is sound and playing footy. Watts will show
some glimpses this year, Id be happy with that.

OK so you'd rather we play all the kids and get dominated every week... what a great way for all these soon-to-be superstars to realise their potential, by getting their confidence shot every week.
Play a team that will win us a game.
We have had enough problems not running out full games without playing half-baked guys like Garland.
That post was so wrong that I simply cbf pointing out all the places where it errs.

So what are you going to do? Give 1 or 2 of the young'uns a game at a time? How would have Morton/Grimes grow last season if we didn't throw them in the deep end?

What happens if the kids are back playing for Casey and they lose, but the seniors full of the older guys who wont be around much longer get a win?

They weren't thrown in the deep end, they were best 22 players.

What happens if the kids are back playing for Casey and they lose, but the seniors full of the older guys who wont be around much longer get a win?

We couldn't even fill half a team with older guys, the "older players" on our list (except Bruce and McDonald) will still be around in 5 years.

So you would have advocated playing Watts from Round 1 last year, no matter how beaten up his stick-like body got? Both Morton and Grimes were ready to go, you know that.
That also indicates that you put Cheney in the 'older guys' bracket... c'mon. Sure, he may end up being a spud, but he could equally become a great back pocket for us... especially if he 'busts his balls to get us over the line'... deserves a game I'd say.

I'm really nervous about this. If you offered me a five goal loss now I'd probably take the chicken option and go for it - I have this dread feeling that we're lambs to the slaughter no matter how injury hit the Hawks are, and that a belting in R1 might completely derail us.

blasmapher!!

We'll win and be in the top 8 :thumbsu:

You'd have to be the footy version of a Scientologist to believe both of those, but by Xenu I'll convert if you're right.

your injection of round 1 optimism is waiting for you Super...

Cmon you know you want to... its great stuff.. Im taking 3 times the recommended dosage and im going great right now! :thumbsu:;)

round 1 optimism may contain side effects such as throwing yourself from the top deck of the southern stand during the 3rd quarter, crashing your car into another car displaying a Hawks scarf after the game or longer term depression problems throughout season 2010 until you can receive another doseage of this potent drug in 2011 take only as recommended.

To be honest I'm more depressed about not living next door to the ground anymore than anything which will actually take place on the field. The five minute walk of FUME after every game was almost the best thing about the last two seasons.
