well, except it was Pink they had to move when he couldn't hold King.

Pink - 1 mark, 32 metres gained; Nyouan - 6 marks, 264 metres gained
^this, pink is the worst of the lot

He reminds me of Josh walker, big slow and average ball in hand, very limited player

In terms of KPD depth I’d order it when all fit Logue, corr, comben, Nyuon, Dawson then pink

I am biased, as a big fan, but would prefer Eddie Ford to Darcy Tucker on a wing.
Doesn't have the running capacity

This tells me you weren't actually at the game today.

Pink was the leader of our defense, in terms of being the one responsible for telling Dawson and Biggy where to go, what holes to fill, and who to match up on. I'm guessing this isn't something you can pickup on Kayo.

Biggy and Dawson were largely clueless in these regards, which comes from a total lack of experience.

Of those three KPDs, Pink would be 1st picked for Round 1 based on this fact alone.

Is Pink an AA calibre defender? No. But until Corr or Logue return he's our most experienced KPD and our best option.

So with the pre-season done and dusted, here is what I think the Round One team will look like. This isn't necessarily what I would do but a combo of my preferences and what I have seen the coaches do during the off season.

ROUND ONE TEAM

BACKS: Goater Pink Dawson
HALF BACKS: Sheezel Comben Fisher

Goater - Has taken a step forward and is showing his dash but also good defensive attributes. Could be the 3rd tall if we decide to streamline the KP stocks;
Pink - Taking feedback about leadership down there, think if he is our setup guy then any difference in performance is small;
Dawson - Been impressive across the pre-season, deserves a shot;

Sheezel - Looks composed and while going up the ground is enticing, think he stays there for now
Comben - Gut feel here, but we have a poor intercept game and if fit, he starts
Fisher - Our No. 1 attacking weapon, pinches Colby's spot for the game start;

MIDFIELD: Xerri LDU Simpkin*
CENTRE: Stephens Wardlaw Scott

Xerri - Been the best ruckman in 2 consecutive weeks, better than I thought, well done
LDU - Average pre season but hopefully waiting for the real stuff
Simpkin* - Better if he doesn't play, but will keep him in for now

Stephens - Standout wingman this off-season, great addition
Wardlaw - His impact on the game is significant even though he has yet to really get going with ball in hand
Scott - Thought was poor yesterday but has the credits, think his body work is poor at HB even though I think the coaches want him there

HALF FORWARDS: Duursma CCJ Stephenson
FORWARDS: Zurhaar Larkey Curtis

Duursma - Wasn't sold until yesterday, class
CCJ - Not ideal but he is big and can ruck so for now, I guess he is it
Stephenson - Best he has been with us this year, fingers crossed it sticks

Zurhaar - still want to see some bursts in the middle but obviously a key
Larkey - Gun
Curtis - Haven't been overly impressed, but still think he plays round 1, lucky Ford has been injured;

INTERCHANGE: Powell Mc Kercher Tucker Lazarro

Powell - His vision and execution has been on par with Harry, new role also seems to be specific to him
McKercher - Good lesson yesterday, but done enough for round 1 as HB rotation
Tucker - Could have been Philips, but I feel that the coaches prefer Tucker for Wing and inside
Lazaro - Great pre-season, runs the lines very well and deserves to be given a shot, but can he take it?

SUB: Philips

Philips - prefer a more versatile player, but think there are half a dozen out of this side that need fitness and form to take that step

NEXT BATCH (Rounds 1-4):

Greenwood - If fit, could easily be the sub or on the bench, and could replace CCJ as a more versatile type
Corr - Fitness keeping him out, will replace someone in round 2
LMAC - See above, although, challenge for the coaching staff on setup
Ford - Creative goal kicker, think he comes straight in when fit.

First game: Opening Round v Collingwood at Giants Stadium, March 9, 7.30pm AEDT

B: Connor Idun, Sam Taylor, Jack Buckley
HB:
Lachie Whitfield, Harry Himmelberg, Lachie Ash
C: Jacob Wehr, Stephen Coniglio, Xavier O'Halloran
HF:
Toby Greene, Jake Riccardi, Brent Daniels
F: Aaron Cadman, Jesse Hogan, Toby Bedford
FOLL: Kieren Briggs, Tom Green, Josh Kelly
I/C: Callan Ward, Ryan Angwin, Harvey Thomas, Josh Fahey, Callum Brown
EMERG:
Nick Haynes, James Peatling, Leek Aleer

NEW: Harvey Thomas

UNAVAILABLE: Darcy Jones (illness), Braydon Preuss (back), Isaac Cumming (quad), Finn Callaghan (shoulder), Phoenix Gothard (illness), James Leake (quad), Harry Perryman (hamstring), Adam Kennedy (knee)

NOTES: It's a settled and maturing Greater Western Sydney side. Wehr and O'Halloran are favourites to get the nod on both wings, given the absence of Cumming and Callaghan. However, Haynes is another option having spent the majority of the summer training higher up the ground. Cadman comes into the team in place of Keeffe, meaning Riccardi will have to take the reins as a second ruck option behind Briggs. There could be an AFL debut for Thomas, who has impressed across the summer, while Angwin could be the substitute to provide some run. Perryman is making a late charge, but will need to prove his fitness before he's considered. Jones would be in contention, but has missed both pre-season practice matches. - Riley Beveridge

First game: Round 1 v Greater Western Sydney at Giants Stadium, March 16, 4.35pm AEDT

B: Harry Sheezel, Toby Pink, Aidan Corr
HB: Colby McKercher, Kallan Dawson, Zac Fisher
C: Bailey Scott, George Wardlaw, Dylan Stephens
HF: Zane Duursma, Callum Coleman-Jones, Tom Powell
F: Paul Curtis, Nick Larkey, Cam Zurhaar
FOLL:
Tristan Xerri, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Jy Simpkin
I/C:
Jaidyn Stephenson, Luke McDonald, Will Phillips, Charlie Lazzaro, Eddie Ford
EMERG: Hugh Greenwood, Curtis Taylor, Darcy Tucker

NEW: Zane Duursma, Colby McKercher, Dylan Stephens, Zac Fisher, Toby Pink

UNAVAILABLE: Griffin Logue (knee), Jackson Archer (groin)

NOTES: It's a new-look North Melbourne side in 2024, featuring up to five fresh faces. McKercher is a lock across half-back, where he will partner fellow recruit Fisher in a defence led by delisted free agent Pink. Expect a spot for Dawson as well, given he has impressed across the summer. The Kangaroos are hopeful that Corr (ankle) and McDonald (hamstring) both play, though Comben and Goater will be on standby if either don't get up. Duursma should also make his AFL debut, provided he gets through a practice match this weekend following a minor knee injury. Stephens will secure himself a spot on the wing, while Wardlaw will provide plenty of grunt in the midfield. Lazzaro looks to have worked himself into the side after a promising pre-season campaign, with Phillips also sneaking into the team. - Riley Beveridge

Updated Round 1 team prediction.

Couple of assumptions;
  • Corr is available
  • Simpkin is OUT for week 1 :'(

B: McKercher - Pink - Goater

HB: Sheezel - Corr - Dawson

C: Stephens - Wardlaw - B.Scott

HF: Powell - Zurhaar - Lazzaro

F:
Duursma - Larkey - J. Stephenson

R: Xerri - LDU - Phillips

INT: Fisher, CCJ, Ford, Tucker

EMG/SUB: P. Curtis (sub), Hugh Greenwood, Bigoa Nyuon, Charlie Comben, Miller Bergman

(If Simpkin is good to go, straight swap with Lazzaro. If Corr is out, straight swap with either Comben or Nyuon).

If you’re judging between Curtis and sleevo based on pre season form I’m going Curtis.

Sleevo played a great qrt and a half in the intra club then went unsighted. Same against the pies. And didn’t get near it yesterday.

Curtis didn’t play the intra club, dominated the pies, didn’t get near it yesterday.

No Goater is absolutely bizarre.

Have been told that Mcdonald is still touch and go for round 1, still has plenty of loading to get through and will probably play in the VFL again this weekend, Comben will also most likely play in the VFL again to keep increasing his loads. For that reason I’m leaving the two of them out.

Corr and Ford are right to go for round 1. Simpkin to have a month off a least, for precautionary reasons with his history of concussion.

B: Goater, Pink, Dawson
HB: Fisher, Corr, Sheezel
C: Scott, Wardlaw, Stephens
HF: Zurhaar, CCJ, Duursma
F: Curtis, Larkey, Ford

C: Stephens Phillips Tucker
HF: Sleevo CCJ Duursma
F: Zurhaar Larkey Curtis
R: Xerri LDU Simpkin
I: wardlaw Powell mckercher scott
Sub: Lazzaro
Only change I’d make is to the above is Goater in for lmac to start the year but it means he likely has the greene matchup that lmac would’ve got

If Simpkin misses laz comes in

SUB: Powell

No Simpkin due to concussion, best to play safe for the first round
No LMac due to fitness
No Corr due to fitness
No Curtis hasn't done enough yet to be in the side.

Is there another VFL practice match before round 1?

PC had a shocking first half but at least pulled his finger out somewhat after that and was a least sighted which is more than can be said for JS. I am not convinced he is in our best 22 nowhere consistent enough over 4 quarters

Doesn't have the running capacity

I think this is fair, particularly off a somewhat limited pre season. Has some strings to his bow though so if we put other run up the field the question starts to be asked.

I can't see Lmac getting enough form to make a claim and it would be a mistake to rush him. If he was Corr's size and we were absolutely skint up there you'd argue it but IMO he will have to force his way in given Goater has looked great and Fisher & Sheezel are walk up starts.

Most people have put forward similar teams but McKercher for me is a lock round 1 on the hbf.
I’ve been a bit disappointed with Curtis in the last practice game BUT I absolutely fooking loved how he rag dolled a few Saints players who were trying to hold onto him. He’s a strong bugger but I want him to chase harder with 2nd and 3rs efforts to keep the ball in our F50.
