Unofficial Preview Round 1 Vs Giants - Saturday March 16

Most people have put forward similar teams but McKercher for me is a lock round 1 on the hbf.
I’ve been a bit disappointed with Curtis in the last practice game BUT I absolutely fooking loved how he rag dolled a few Saints players who were trying to hold onto him. He’s a strong bugger but I want him to chase harder with 2nd and 3rs efforts to keep the ball in our F50.

He needs to focus and practice nailing down some consistency. I felt he was pretty distracted from the second quarter onwards and seemed more interested in wrestling than applying real pressure. That strength is extremely handy when applied correctly, like when he ripped the ball out of that Pie's hands while throwing him over his shoulder the other week.

I hear ya.
Just needs to play the ball, gets sucked in way too easily to wrestling with his opponent.

I’m not sure if it’s a simple as X Key defender plays on Y Key Forward.

Green is the biggest worry though. It would be a massive show of faith to put Goater on him for large periods of the match.

I’m still not writing off Corr for round 1. I’m sure he’ll play the 4 qrts in the vfl on the weekend.

If he does that well he can come in for Biggey.

If you’re judging between Curtis and sleevo based on pre season form I’m going Curtis.

Sleevo played a great qrt and a half in the intra club then went unsighted. Same against the pies. And didn’t get near it yesterday.

Curtis didn’t play the intra club, dominated the pies, didn’t get near it yesterday.
Both will play

I've really rated Sleevo this pre-season. There were a couple really nice moments against the pies that highlighted his pace and running ability. He didn't get much of it against the saints but the conditions proved to be a big issue for many on the day. His off the ball work has been noticeable for mine so far.

Yup, hasn't had all the reward but definite starter for mine.

I think we've improved a lot this year, and I'd love to start the year off with a win. We'll definitely pinch some games as underdogs this year, and the extra week off might be enough of an advantage for us to make that happen.

That said, the Giants are awesome and I don't think this is the type of game that we should be expecting to win just yet.

Hogan, Riccardi, Cadman, Greene, Bedford, Brown, and Daniels is a massive test for our inexperienced backline. Pink, Dawson, Nyuon, Fisher, Goater, and McKercher combine for about 15 games of experience as defenders, and they'll all be looking after opponents who could kick a bag on any given week. Corr likely comes in for one of the talls, but it'll still be rough

The Giants move the ball fast and accurately and our defenders will be under siege all day. Holding them under 100 points would be a massive win for us. In the worst case scenario where we have a bottom two defence in the AFL, the Giants have enough firepower to push for 150+.

Briggs, Kelly, Green, and Coniglio should have an advantage in the middle, and Sam Taylor will make Larkey work for his opportunities. They are basically built as a team to beat us, and I'd rate this game as the toughest on our fixture all year.

A win in this game should genuinely start a discussion of if finals are a reality for our young side.

I'd be happy if it's competitive, and even a score of 70 to 95 would be a clear sign of a team that has greatly improved. A score of about 70-110 is the pass mark, but we shouldn't overreact too much if we fall short. I'm expecting something like 60-130 in this game, but it won't be the end of the world. The round two game against Fremantle will be a much better indicator of where we are at.

Agreed, I would be astonished and excited if we kept the score low. I hate that we're starting the season off with this game. The Giants (at home, with the rust shaken off) will be extremely dangerous, and I'm just praying that the drive and belief that we've been building since last year's Gold Coast victory and all through the pre-season isn't ripped out of our players in a 150 point orange tsunami.

Yeah he has been good. I'd still have Curtis ahead of him and, based on the last games of last season, Ford as well.

I think mcdonald has usually done a decent job on green, even with his injury? - but its a fair point about being underdone. I assume we will rotate through some of the new defenders until we get a matchup that works.

B: McDonald Corr Nyuon
HB: Sheezel Comben Fisher
C: Stephens Phillips Tucker
HF: Sleevo CCJ Duursma
F: Zurhaar Larkey Curtis
R: Xerri LDU Simpkin
I: wardlaw Powell mckercher scott
Sub: Lazzaro
Only change I’d make is to the above is Goater in for lmac to start the year but it means he likely has the greene matchup that lmac would’ve got

If Simpkin misses laz comes in
jy out
Well laz and Phillips both playing then

Ford to sub

Do what now?

I'm not the QE2's greatest fan, but we're bereft up fwd and need him as the second ruck option. Sellars will no doubt get a crack at some stage.
I'm confused about the Comben backline experiment tbh. Once Logue returns along with Corr and Dawson.

As Cat Stevens sung , " where does the Comben plaaa aaa aa ay"

You are correct. If you ask a player, they will talk about team defence and how well that holds up.

We are still learning our team defence and need Corr back and MacDonald to help keep it in shape but they were ok on the weekend in terrible cross wind conditions.

The next brain tease is Zurhaar Stepho Ford Duursma All 190 forwards

I’m guessing Zane probably not Afl fit but must be tempting to say we’ve got plenty of runners now
Fisher Stephens McK Goat just play the best footballers

Zane was excellent on Sunday but you are right, he was knackered half way through quarters, especially the first. Exploded out of the gates and burnt out but fought the 4 quarters out well.

Still a big chance I think but a Shiels or more mature body might get the nod. Jy out might help him.

He is so raw he'd be walking around a paddock if he was a steak. Given his form last year McDonald is the last player I'd be rushing back from injury even if we have nobody left in the backline.
