At least it is Round 1 where anything can happen and neither team will be exactly at their peak. If it’s as slippery as expected with this humidity then whichever team can crack in harder and gut run further will be in the box seat.

But yeah, play this line-up under the roof in a couple of weeks for example and we will get smoked. Hopefully Rosas, Ellis, Weller, Lemmens are all back in the next week or 2 with Powell not far behind.

A surprising line-up to say the least.

This will be a fascinating game. Judging by season opener it will be an average, scrappy game with a lot of turnovers, sloppy skills. It looks like one practice game is not enough.

Ball will be a soap in hot and humid conditions. This is one more reason, why I am surprised by selecting all 5 talls especially after Dew said on multiple occasions that we can’t play them together. I suspect one will be on the bench at any time, one probably substituted.

With all those talls, question is can we can keep the ball inside 50 like last year. Quick re-bound by Swans could kill us. Can we put enough pressure on Swans? On the other hand, we could really stretch Swans defence.

I am cautiously optimistic about midfield battle. Witts should get better of Ladhams. Miller and Swallow are class and Anderson and Rowell looked primed. Davies, Flanders looked to be ready taking next step.

Very happy for Uwland. Obviously, it will be his first game, but he has some great attributes – good in contest, competitive, looks like great kick. It would not surprise me if he takes over Budarick’s role. I remember Kall Burns considering him a bullocking midfielder down the track.

Some obvious questions regarding line-up. How will Constable go? Can he defend? Will Macpherson cost us with clangers (like Lemmens usually does). How do we line-up on talls (Reid is a big loss for Swans, IMO)? Collins vs Buddy (Buddy looked not up to it in pre-season which means nothing), Ballard vs McDonald, Farrar vs McLean?

Who will be a sub? Berry or Fiorini?

A bit sad that Sharp is not even emergency with Ellis, Powell, Weller missing. He can probably start walking slowly to Perth.

We don’t have to win (most so-called experts don’t tip us) but the effort, pressure, contest must be there.

Can’t wait for Saturday.
The biggest watches for me:
  • it goes without saying, the return of the King
  • Luko has now has two preseasons as a forward and doesn’t have the lingering injuries like last year, can he finally show us what he’s made of?
  • Matt Rowell looked much better in the preseason than he did last year, I just hope he steps up

Witts, Miller, Anderson, Rowell, Swallow, Flanders

v

Ladhams, Mills, Warner, Rowbottom, Parker, Gulden

Perfect match ups, 2 AA's Brownlow favourites, 2 Future brownlow favourites, 2 tackling/clearances machines, 2 champions of their club, 2 break out contenders

You know, they'd be saying something different if we were a big Melbourne team. I've never seen a team so down played after a progressive year last year with a returning superstar (King). I feel like the media has written us off after a quiet preseason. Ainsworth, Holman and Joel were all bigger contributors last year than Rankine. He wasn't anywhere near consistent last year to say he was a complete game changer.

Very harsh. Also, I feel if we beat the Swans, they'll just say it's a grandfinal hangover.

I wonder if Uwland is the one to push Macpherson out (eventually). If he gets off to a nice start he has the attributes.

When Powell and Weller get back it could be Uwland that stays with those two rather than Constable and Macpherson.

Or is that too optimistic?
I recall someone once saying that whilst DMac is playing in the senior team then we won’t be playing finals. I no longer 100% agree with this as footy is obviously a team sport but it is still not far wrong. Once Uwland finds his feet at the top level he would be an excellent upgrade. Bigger, stronger, faster, much better kick.

I think DMac isn't anywhere near our best 22 and I wouldn't put him in the side. But the one thing you can guarantee with him is that he will be hard at the ball and physical.
Maybe they are just using him as a tone setter until Powell, Weller, Ellis are back, or maybe Dew and co have identified the key to beating Sydney is physicality?
Who knows.

Like the look of some of these match ups. Sydney have some great intercepting backs, and some great foot skills out of defence, we have them for speed, our pressure in the fwd line will win it for us. Lukosius I have been riding you all summer but if you get 4 tackles tomorrow, then I will believe. Add Flanders, Holman and maybe Berry to the mix and we can apply ALOT of pressure.

King McCartin
Casboult McCartin
Chol Rampe
Jeffery Blakey
Lukosius Cunningham
Ainsworth Florent

Really hoping Constable and Uwland play well, Dmac has been kissed on the d but good luck to him, we match up well, at home I think we should win

Persist / keep the faith with DMac, bit of a turnover merchant at the moment but has poise and footy smarts and will be a goodun

DMac just has to recover and maintain his form from a few years ago, transfer that to a defensive role, and he’ll at the very least prove to be a good role player if needed.

We're going to be shown on CH7's main channel in Queensland tonight instead of the 7mate coverage we're used to. Really hope we can take full advantage of this and show the Queensland public that we're ready in 2023!

Darcy I thought was decent defensively in the trial games. 6 intercepts including 1 contested mark.

And he got involved well when we had the ball. 22 disposals, 8 marks.

The 5 turnovers were bad. Just needs to hit his short kicks and not try being a kicking play maker.

The concern is against quality teams, where those 5 turnovers result in opposition goals. We can’t cover that. Kills momentum, kills team confidence and kills TV remotes being thrown around lounge rooms.

Hopefully it’s only a short term fix with Buderick, Powell, Weller returning.

Budarick vs Macpherson vs Lemmens last year. Not really fair comparison as they played different positions but still interesting. Hopefully, Uwland for me down the track. It seems like most people ignore Budarick's clangers/turnovers numbers.

B vs M vs L: Turnovers 3.1 2.7 3.0, Clangers 2.7 2.1 2.8, DE 68 63 75

Oh I know.
Unforced turnovers in your back half is almost always a scoring opportunity for the opposition.
Agree, he is out of the team once those guys are available.

I think if he plays within his limitations in terms of his kicking, he can still have positive influence.
