Dean would be stiff to miss. Like, congratulations on your debut, you're playing on Jesse Hogan in career best form. At least against Sydney he won't get a Schade moment against Buddy and might get a McLean, Amartey or McDonald.
And let’s not forgot it was captain courageous who was on Hogan in first half and refused to play near him

New season new chances. Tbh he will get dropped but I alway prefer players given a sustained run.
I'm all for giving new or young players a sustained run. However, I think we've done that enough with AJ, and honestly he hadn't shown any real improvement or change in the pre-season to earn another shot. He was simply the known option as a tallish forward to replace McStay.

I think we need to give Reef a go or think up another approach until McStay is ready. Cox or Frampton to crash packs and bring the ball down for our smalls? Ugggh, what I'd give for a beast key forward

If we dish up crap like that again, Swans will smash us.
Frampton up forward is a hard NO. He’s woeful.
As a defender. Yes.
Out: Dean. In: Frampton (or Howe if fit)
Out: Johnson (he’s simply not AFL standard). In: Reef
Out: Elliot. Did bugger all during the finals. Has continued that lack of form. Bobby/Schulz/McCreery is enough small power. In: McRae.
Mitchell stays for the extractions and McRae is his chop-out.
JFN starts. He has the hunger. Olev brings the run off the bench as the sub.

Totally get that and I know I’m in the minority.

Assuming Howe nor Murphy will be ready.

Only change I can foresee with no VFL at this point is McInnes for AJ because it was lineball between the two and AJ had a quiet night.
AJ wasn't just quiet. He did not attack the pill or opponents with anywhere near enough intent. Billy Elliott had a quiet game but as always threw himself into every contest.

The temptation after a bad loss is to go with sweeping changes, but I think that would be an overreaction after the first game of the year.

If Howe is available, he should come in. Otherwise I’d go another week with the same side, with Cox and Johnson “on notice”. They were both really, really poor, but I feel like we need to give what we thought was our best 22 at least 2 games.

Agree with most, except AJ has been given plenty of chances. Enough is enough.
I gave him a like but feel exactly like you. The problem for me is the McInnes for AJ swap because they cannot play the same role in the forward line. We toyed with the idea of using Cox as a tall forward prior to the season, but after his inept effort last night, it seems we must accept the lack of a big forward presence this year and somehow work around it.

I know its reactionary and potentially putting too much pressure on unproven fourth year players. But I'd be disappointed if Macrae and Reef aren't in the selected 23 for Friday, preferably the starting 22.

On an unrelated matter, last night showed me that our 2024 prospects will largely come down to whether we bank enough home and away wins to get a Prelim at the MCG. Not exactly a revelation, but geez I feel sorry for any team that has to go through Brisbane at the Gabba, Giants at the paddock, or to a lesser extent Swans at the SCG.

Brisbane just lost. That might be important for Collingwood later in the year, home losses to these clubs might be the difference between a home final or not.

Apart from that what you say is always true. Vic clubs need to win a lot of neutral derbies against vic teams to make finals whilst interstate sides can get there a little easier by if they capitalise on their home ground advantage 10+ times a year

Captain courageous?

Are you questioning Darcy’s courage hero?

Not only do you give the cowardly sledge, you can’t even get your facts right. Most of the game they tried to make Moore the loose man or have him play on the lesser player, so he could run off. GWS successfully dragged him away from the play.

I think Ash has had enough chances now. Sadly it’s just not working out. For me, he’s an out. Try Reef. Don’t have high hopes for him either but he’s worth trying over AJ now.

I’d play Frampton instead of Dean or as well as if we need to be taller, assuming Howe and Murphy not available. Otherwise I’d have Frampton and Howe in for Dean and Markov.

Hurts me to say but Markov should be sub at best after last night. He looked a shadow of the dashing player who fast became my fave last year. Maybe an off game as many of them had. But he’s already on the fringe so sub for me.

Cox I’m not sure about. We didn’t win that Grand Final without him, but his bad is bad! He can’t play enough minutes and he’s not clunking marks most of the time now.

I don’t know really. Probably best not to change much and hope they all wake up and realise we’re playing a new season now. No more being satiated by last years premiership anymore. We want another!

It’s heartwarming to see how quickly people jump off.
Not sure if heartwarming or disheartening.
We are quick to attack our side, yet 90% we’re grand finalist players.
We will turn it around soon.
In reference to AJ, sure he was disappointing, but I think we lost sight of the fact that he may have been on potentially the best backmen in the league last night.
Time will tell as they say…

Everyone calling for Finn to come in hmm I wonder who’s been saying that for ages.

I see the annual calling for Coxs head has started. He and AJ seem to be the only ones to blame for the loss according to BF. I don’t know why I bother reading these things it’s always the same.

Changes for next week for what it’s worth.
In: Howe if fit, Finn
Out: JFN, Mitchell

If Howe is not fit the Frampton.

I think the backline works better with 3 tall defenders. WHE played tall last night and it didn’t work. Dean needs to play on the 3rd tall and Sydney have 3 genuine talls. Mitchell is a tough call but I’m only saying him because he was subbed last night.
