Round 12 The Sydney Swans vs. The Port Adelaide Power

I've been on the Mattner defence force lately but I think he was horrible on the weekend. Didn't look interested at times. The coaches might give him another chance because he's a senior player but if he plays like that on Saturday he won't play again the Pies in a few weeks.

Yeah would have to agree with you on Mattner. Made some very costly turnovers against the dons. If he gives another woeful performance against Port then I reckon Kennelly once fit (should be by pies game) should replace Mattner.

Mcglynn looked like he struggled a bit in the ressies but should be bought back this week, we miss his in and under skills at the ball.

IN: Mcglynn
OUT: Bevan

Structurally, I think Mattner is very important to the swans. That is all.

Mattner f@(ked up, worked his butt of to fix it, f@(ked up again, ditto, ditto.

No problem with him. He had a bad day

If we're playing 3 talls in the forward line again I feel we ought to have more crumbers, especially as it's supposed to be wet.

Too many times the last few weeks we've lacked the small speedsters in the forward 50 to i) feed off the talls and ii) put some defensive pressure on. Again Essendon ran it out of our f50 way too easily.

I'd like to see Jetta play as a small forward until McGlynn and Moore come back in. He's a good mark and lead, a good crumber and if he roams a bit he can burn off his opponent leaving him behind in a quick Swans attack through the corridor. He may even get a goal or two !

I think Jetta is too small to play the forward role. He's silky and classy but hasn't got the body strength to lock it in with strong tackles I reckon.

We played much better when Gary Rohan went forward, I think he could be the option. Forget about playing him in defence, and use his chasing and tackling to keep the ball in the F50. Hopefully McGlynn can come back and play a role, we've really missed him.

Roosy said on SEN that Vez's fitness is the reason he hasn't had a game yet this year and that they have been working hard on his fitness levels, with the way the speed of the game is, but isn't far away.

Strewth, what was he like one of those contestants on the biggest loser when he fronted up to pre-season training Dani boy?

I thought Rohan looked good forward too and 3 goals as a bit player in the forward line speaks for itself. He's certainly fast enough and throws a great tackle. Vesz would be good too if he can be whipped into shape.

Someone mentioned on here that Jetta had played forward before. True he's not gonna crunch anyone in a tackle but his speed should be enough to ensure he makes a contest. Even that should be enough to help us bottle it in.

Against Essendon we slaughtered them in the clearances (thanks to Mummy, Jude, McVeigh) yet they were only a few i50s behind and they goaled from 26% of those compared to a measly 19% of our i50s. All this points to Essendon mounting their attacks (too easily) from half-back and then pressuring our backs sufficiently to give them multiple attacks on goal.

In some ways the Essendon game could have gone like the last 4. We showed the same lack of i50 pressure and our rebound defenders fluffed and folded again under the opposition's fast rebounding attack and intense forward pressure. Fortunately in the Essendon game our dominance at clearances was so complete, so absolutely bloody unimaginably good as to make up for these shortcomings. Can we rely on Mummy, Jude and McVeigh to so completely dominate week after week ?

I think until Tadgh gets back our running defence is not enough to clear a fast high pressure opposition. Only Malceski seems competent at hitting up targets and even he was off last weekend. Shaw's main weapon is his run and carry which only works against slower opposition. Mattner doesn't have the speed of Shaw but he's (usually) a better kick. Tadgh is one of those rare players where time stands still around them.

Given that we are likely to do well in clearances while Mummy is in such form we must throw all our resources to stopping the rebound from our f50. If that means Jetta has to throw his scrawny arms and legs around 100kg of hulking hard-running opposition defender, crushing his wedding tackle in the process  , then so be it.

Agreed.

One thing about Sunday's game. very noticeable that often our boys down back would try to be too fancy trying to handball our way out of trouble - resulting in a fair few turnovers.

Thing is - great if they do this and attack thru the corridor. On the other hand, when man-on-man, they should just kick the bloody thing outta there.

First post, Hi all,

Dylan McNeil, he keeps dominating, and has not really been mentioned for a seniors game, anyone know anything about him in terms of getting a gig? Saw him in Canberra a few weeks ago and he was brilliant!!!

Yeah but he can still get a game cant he? Or does he have to wait until there is a long term injury. I thought you could play a certain amount of games if you were a rookie, and then after that you have to be elevated to the seniors??

Port were pretty good and underrated while Tredrea was in the side. He is nowhere near as effecitve as he used to be but they just have no real big forwards to replace him with. He is vital to their team. When he went down injured i told myself Port will drop off badly and it has happened so we really need to win this game.
The funny thing is we do have forwards to replace Warren Tredrea's role in the side. Our coaching staff are incompetent buffoons and the forward structure is dysfunctional at best. You can't replace the quality of player but you certainly can ask a player to play his role.

I don't bother projecting Port Adelaide games anymore. We've been schizophrenic since 2005 and I don't see that changing under Mark Williams anytime soon.

Henry might struggle to make it back in despite some decent form. Bradshaw due back against the Pies.

Great to see Benny back. I have my doubts Tadhg will play.

Calling it now, Chad Cornes to play on Goodes and try to emulate his performance on him a few years ago when he was way out of form and did a tagging job on him.

I think Jets is probably having a little bit of a rest. He's been a bit quiet, but Roos seemed to be very vocal in his support of him over the last couple of weeks in his press conferences. He might of liked streaking down the wings at AMMI, but I'm glad Gopher is back. Missed him.
