Autopsy Round 13, 2013 - Hawthorn v Eagles

Last night once again supported my life long claim that it doesn't matter how many hit outs you have, it doesn't matter how many clearances you have, and all these other non-sensical stats, all that really matters is if yoiu have enough opportunities in front of goal, and you make them count, you will win the game.

The importance of accurate kicking for goal for some reason is neglected in our game, and yet it remains the single most important factor. It has decided premierships.
omg...they will shoot you down for this...........but I could nt agree more..............all the brilliance in the world is useless if it doesn't translate to goals

Eagles were very good. They were a different team than the last month or so, amazing what can happen when players actually decide to run and move.
This might of helped:
"WEST Coast recalled big guns Josh Kennedy, Mark LeCras, Beau Waters and Darren Glass among six inclusions to play Hawthorn."

Except you need the other stuff to get the opportunities in front of goal.

Re the Strats incident:

Eagles coach John Worsfold, when asked if he was concerned about the incident, said: "The fact that you're raising it with me, yeah, I'm concerned.

"But I haven't seen it, so it will run its course."

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said he had not seen what happened.

These coaches don't see much from that coaching box..... makes you wonder what they are doing up there.... they mustnt look at the screens either..... ;-)

The only time I can remember a coach cracking it about an off the ball incident was Schwabby the time Jess Sinclair elbowed Lance Picionie at Docklands in about 2003

I've been holding off saying this, but I can't bite my tongue any longer. Is it fair to say that, and putting it politely, Brad Hill does not have an 'appetite for the cotest'?

He isn't hard by any means but at this stage it isn't an overly serious issue.

We need him to run, link up, deliver nicely to forwards and kick some goals. For the most part he is doing that. I'm sure behind the scenes they will be trying to make sure he knows that despite him not needing to be Luke Hodge, there are times when he has to 'put it on the line, take the hit, etc...".

Been meaning to come over here...

Congrats guys, thought we might of been about to cause an upset when LeCras kicked that goal from the pocket at the beginning of the second term, but it wasn't to be. Second WC game I've been to in Melbs and I can't say I'm unhappy I decided to go, was a good, hard game.

The better team won, but I'm glad we made you fight for it. Good luck for the rest of the season and I hope you smash Geelong in two weeks so little shits like Gavin Excell and pavilion103 can finally be put back in their place.

There is a lot in this. 2008 GF Geelong won everything except the game. 2009 St Kilda won everything except the game. 2012 Hawks won everything except the game. It seems that every time we play the cats we beat them except we lose. They just score easier. Good to see the Hawks starting to score easier.
You can add Sydney losing just about every key stat and winning. However this trend is recent. Just about every other GF winner is correlated with the usual key stats. Is this an aberration or a paradigm shift in which efficiency is the only KPI that matters?

Cruise control is how I would describe last nights win, West Coast were good and would beat most teams playing like that but we were always in control and won reasonably comfortably in the end despite the finals scores.

I would like to say one thing, did we witness the worst umpiring decision of all time last night or am I losing my mind? Admittedly it was at the opposite end of the ground to me and I was a few deep when watching the replay but how on earth was that a free kick against Franklin in the second quarter, what did I miss?

We did indeed cruise, and played pretty average imo. Playing average and winning like that is pretty good. Get a few back in and i expect that level to take the next step.

Thanks man, you guys were excellent last night. Showed how you can be when you get some good players back and get close to full strength again. We were the same in '09 and '10. Absolutely crippled with injuries. Now we're having a decent run and look what it does. Will be the same for you guys.
I reckon you'll seriously worry some sides from now on, get some good wins and still play finals. And yeah, hope ya's work Geelong over later in the year (Rd 20?).

Given his light frame I am happy for others to do the heaving lifting. HAs good skills in close on the rare occasion he goes in their. Seems like a Danyle Pearce type that will never be a a physical beast in the contest but will get competent at competing for a contested ball against similar types.

Focussing on the positives for a moment, or the positive - last night, after having his pants pulled down, we had a bloke who could use his superior height to clunk some big ones across the centre and make good decisions to transition the team forward.

We haven't had that since Everitt or Salmon.

So well done Max Bailey, by adding more strings to your bow you are making this side more dangerous and unpredictable.

He is a gem Big Max. One thing that is absolutely outstanding from him is his quick hands. He is genuinely another midfielder when he is part of a handball chain in close. I guess practising handballing all through 3 knee reconstructions has really paid dividends. And as you have pointed out, he is just starting to be able to get to more contests on time to take contested marks.

Max and Lake have given our side so much more resolve.

Lake is just what the doctor ordered. I struggle to look back and see how we made a GF last year without him. Was a great line from him last night when he was asked "you must be enjoying playing with this backline" and he said "yeah the backline is fantastic...but so is the midfield...and the forward line"!! Must have been having panic attacks at the Dogs watching the ball come in with such ease. He is a genuine freak with his reading of the ball. Absolutely elite and a pleasure to watch. And seems to be absolutely loving being in the Brown n Gold. I really hope we can get another 2 seasons out of him. But I also hope we can find another genuine defender to learn under him (and I don't mean Schoey I mean a GENUINE defender).

That's all very well to say, my worry is that there could be a clutch moment in a big game where a player unwilling to go into a contest, or lay an important tackle, could cost us the game.
eg. if that was Hill and not Stratton on Dangerfield late in the Prelim last year, Dangerfield breaks the flimsy tackle, or simply runs away, kicks the goal, we lose and miss a Grand Final spot.

Or imagine the grand final if someone lost their footing in the goal square at let through an easy goal at a critical moment..

Anyway - little guys need exposure to be big guys.

Hill is being worked out a bit by the opposition - they know he will try and sidestep, so they don't overcommit to the tackle and he's tying himself up in knots. He'll get better - he's a really promising player.

As for the big dance - if Savage can make his performance last night his standard then he gets in and smith/hill can nettle it out for the other wing.

Would love to see smith hit a new level.
