Western Bulldogs 0.8 5.1 1 10.16 13.19 (97)
West Coast 3.2 10.3 13.3 16.6 (102)
West Coast caused the upset of the season to end a 19 game losing streak away from home. The Eagles started with a bang to lead the Bulldog s by 47 points 21 minutes into the second quarter, before the Bulldogs rallied to trail by only 5 points at three quarter time. The last quarter was an arm wrestle with West Coast coming out 5 points on top, thanks to a Mark Lecras goal with 2.15 left.
Ironically, the currently out of form Andrew Embley was easily best on ground with 28 touches and 4 goals, while Mitch Brown was awarded a rising star nomination for his effort in defence, the opposite end of the ground to which he’ll line up on Sunday. [/FONT]
Key Match Ups
Eric Mackenzie v Barry Hall
Big Bad Bustling Bulldog Barry has a lot of history against the Eagles, playing for Sydney in the 2005 and 2006 Grand Finals, and delivering that left hook to Brent Staker’s cheekbone in 2008. Hall has thrived in his first year at the kennel to be second in the Coleman with 43 goals. Eric Mackenzie had a shocker last week, conceding 4 goals in the opening 11 minutes to the man who beating Hall in the Coleman, Jack Reiwoldt and will be looking for a chance to redeem himself against Barry.
Nic Naitanui v Ben Hudson
Dean Cox will lead West Coast’s ruck division, but the more interesting matchup is the one between the cult figures of both clubs. NicNat has copped a lot of stick from the media after his lacklustre effort against the Tigers, while The People’s Beard has been one of the best ruckmen in the competition this season.
Josh Kennedy v Brian Lake
After disappointingly being left out of the team to play Germany in South Africa, Kennedy comes up against the best key defender in the game at the moment. The Eagles will need Kennedy to fire to have any chance against the Bulldogs so this matchup is a big one
Andrew Strijk/ Koby Stevens v ???
It’s great to see these two finally get a chance to debut after excellent WAFL form this year. Strijk was terrific for West Perth with 27 touches and 3 goals last week against East Fremantle, while in the same game Stevens had 35 touches and kicked a goal to be the Sharks best.
Prediction
Expect West Coast to come out firing after the pathetic effort against the Tigers last week, however, in the end the Bulldogs will be too quick and classy for the Eagles. Unfortunately, I’m tipping the Bulldogs by 28, but only if RoJo Jnr doesn’t bet on this game.
