AFL Autopsy Round 14: Essendon defeated by Sydney (1 point)

Said someone on this board, first game agains a big physical bodied Sydney may not have been the best for him

He was thrown to the wolves last year without the back up of our senior players. Plus Swans actually have a lot of youngsters themselves. Fair enough if they wanted to ease him in the VFL with half a game but if you're going to play whole game, throw him in.

Despite pulling a win out of our arse I'm still dirty on all the missed shots last night, if you guys nailed yours also the red time drama mightn't have been possible either.
Long story short is you matched us in last quarter with the contested stuff and pressure, beat us with movement and end of he day it'll get you to and stand up in finals. Good luck for rest of season

The last 4 minutes was a bunch of errors on our part, yeah Sydney put the pressure on us, I'm not sure I'd list Gleeson in there though, when it was arguably a free agains Rohan, but not being able to hold a 19 point lead with 4 odd minutes, their is no blame on the umps.

Buddy seemed to get a little space late, no goals sure but he kept firing it I50.

BJ's smothered kick

Joes kick to Tippa contest one of the shortest guys on the field

As others here have said no one between the contest and goal line where Gleeson and Rohan were were all far bigger errors
Yea, I turned it off as soon a I saw it heading for the goal, and only could stomach watching it again right now. Gleeson was held around the midriff and lifted out of the contest Free kick I reckon

I at least want an answer to that non call from someone official.

Not shattered. Just feel for the boys. Played so well. Green and Howlett have to go. Bellchambers is such a good player now. Onwards and upwards
Disagree. Corgi is dangerous and Howlett, whilst limited possessions, was strong and effective. Maybe leave him in Fwd Pocket for a game. He'll kick goals. And be strong defence.

Sydney best team at the moment. WE let them get away and then 'should have won it'. Pretty good. 2018 I'm thinking. But who knows?

Begley i reckon
trying to work out our replacement plans over the next 2 years.
Thinking:
Jobe -> Parish
Begley -> Howlett
Goddard -> Laverde
TBC -> Draper
Kelly -> Ridley
Baguley -> Ambrose

Ambrose Hartley Ridley
McGrath Hurley McKenna
Parish Heppell Langford
Green Daniher Tippa
Stewart Hooker Fantasia
Draper Merrett Laverde
Begley Gleeson Colyer Zaka

There will also be new draft picks added, we'll lose Watson and Kelly this year. Possibly Goddard but I think he has another in him.

Need some inside mids

Give it a rest ffs. He was coming back from a soft tissue injury, there were doubts about him being able to run out the game. If there was any tightness in the VFL he would have sat out the rest of the match. The last thing we want to do is rush him back and cause him to tear the muscle even more resulting in scar tissue and long term problems. If he did play against Sydney and torn the calf off the bone then you'd be up in arms about him being rushed in. I'll back Crow and the medical staff who have kept our injury list in the best shape we've seen in years.

I think we were lucky to be in it at 3/4 time and hung in.

We have a very good patch around the 4th, and made some mistakes, you guys had us under a lot of pressure that forced it.

Strange game, if we won I thought we would have stolen it, but giving up 19 points 4 odd minutes is frustrating too.

Very excited for the future.

However I refuse to watch any football media this week.
Brendan Goddard is going to be a panelist on Footy Classified this Monday night. Chose a good week to go on.
Also haven't seen or heard much mention of the conditions last night - a heavy dew hit the SCG well before the game & as we saw, both sides had players slipping & sliding. The Swans have more exposure to that issue up there, which is quite common, so it's also another tic for our mob to still have been able to play with speed & accuracy, for the most part.
Was listening to MMM midday rub today. BT mentioned that the ground was watered pre game and there was also a NEAFL curtain raiser on beforehand. Suggested that Sydney being a contested team wanted to nullify our running game.
They were saying the grass was too long at the SCG. Maybe there is something fishy going on...
MMM was also suggesting that the grass was a longer length compared to other grounds.

Paradoxically 'strange game' both sums it up perfectly and doesn't do it justice lol

Well ffs if you're that concerned you give him another week off. Do you think Dees play Oliver in VFL after after two weeks off? He's a clear beat 22.

It wasn't too dissimilar to last year's granny actually. But your midfield was simply way too good for us when we tried to bottle the game up in the closing stages.

It's unfortunate that we can only beat sides one way at the moment because run and gun is just not going to work all the time in these situations
