AFL Autopsy Round 14: Essendon defeated by Sydney (1 point)

Let's be honest with ourselves. We don't know if the players will or won't learn from it. It's a nice sentiment but it's not a given. All the loss says to me is we need to keep developing a hard, smart, skilful team through continued solid recruitment and all the rest of the basics.

We won't win the premiership this year. We may win it next year.
If they can't learn from that...

Position on ladder would suggest it, but have won 6/7 & are form team of comp.

Name 6 teams that will finish higher??

Ridiculous statement
I agree with him.
Swans are fringe top 8 at best. They may have won 6/7, but that has been against Brisbane, St Kilda away, North Melbourne away, Bulldogs, Richmond away and Essendon, with the latter two choking hard.

Fremantle at a stage also won 6/7 with wins against Bulldogs, Melbourne away, North Melbourne, Essendon, Richmond away and Carlton

I honestly don't see Sydney as premiership contenders unless there is a drastic improvement in form. We'll see how they go against Melbourne this week

You're right - This week will tell us a lot about Sydney. Think they are better than fringe top 8, not sure how much better though.

Tippas' effort was poor didn't bring the ball to ground got beaten pretty easy in 1v1 which was disappointing.

It was to Mills advantage, and he is excellent above his head, it was poor by Joe, and also the players around Joe that didn't spread. The pressure from buddy on Joe meant the ball went to Walla instead of Tommy, personally don't think Joe was thinking and just went for distance.

Id recommend if people wanted to relive it they watch Goddard breaking down the last few mistakes of the game on Footy classified, its on their FB page.

Those holding the man free kicks where the attacking player is all over the defender right near the goals are almost never paid. If Gleeson had've done what Rohan did (roles reversed) then he would have been paid a free kick against. If the same thing happens to Gleeson on the wing, then Gleeson gets paid the free.
I don't think we have to worry about that.

Tippa 171cm
Mills 188cm

That's 17cm he is giving away Mills should absolutely smash Tippa in a marking contest so I wouldn't be too hard on tippa at all, kick shouldn't have gone there in the first place.

Can only beat who's in front of you.

They're away wins v Stk/North @ Etihad were emphatic!! Stk beat GWS & North smashed Adelaide if you're looking to frank form!!...and I would t be sneezing at the Richmond win either coming v from 6 goals down.

We'll touch base again after Friday night;)

I'd be less worried about who Sydney has beaten and more worried about who and how we are losing to.
We keep hearing how teams practice for close finishes, someone needs to tell Worsfold someones not listening.

But didn't Tippa let him play on? I could be wrong about that.

I was there too unfortunately.

Travelled to Sydney for it.

That last quarter seemed to last forever too.

the last 3 minutes felt like an hour!

Didn't want to post on this straight away, needed to settle after what was a very disappointing loss in the end from the position we were in, but there's plenty of positives.
-We were 24 points down and did not look likely at all to win it at that stage, but then we were able to turn the momentum in a big way and kick 7 unanswered goals.
-Despite Sydney being one of the best contested ball sides, were not smashed in the clearances. Beaten, but not smashed as we have been at times this year.
-We were effective at setting up scoring opportunities and we will likely be better again with Hooker back in.
-Merrett continues to dominate. I've heard a bit about Kennedy destroying us in the clearances. Merrett got more (8 to 7). Gun.
-Zaharakis has had a massive couple of months and for a player who was copping a bit of heat around here at the start of the season, he has certainly lifted and is averaging 29 disposals since round 8. Very important to re-sign this lad.
-Hurley was awesome again and continues to build after the year off.
-Gleeson had probably his best game for the year - despite being tackled off the ball in the last second.
-Bellchambers was very good again in the ruck and around the ground.
-McKenna continues to build in confidence and dash.
-Hartley kept Buddy goalless - yes he had 6 behinds but they were generally all tough shots, not like he was having set shots from 30metres out.
etc etc lots of good performances.

On the other hand I expect more from Heppell, Watson and Green who I thought were all down this week. Langford and McKernan were serviceable in their return to the side but need more from them.

Once we were up by 19 it seemed we tried to switch the game plan up and defend the lead but didn't really know how to do it.
Sydney on the other hand went more all out attack and took advantage of our confusion.
No doubt this will be reviewed in detail and we will hopefully be better prepared if this situation occurred again.

Was devastated we lost. Still plenty of positives as this team continues to build together and continues to show that our best footy can beat anyone and I believe we will only improve in consistency from here.

As an aside - how bloody good is our injury list for this point in the season? Only really Ambrose on it now.

Agree with most mate especially Zaka. Deserves to be a bomber for life. He'll stay.

Think TBC nearly WOG though probably gets dropped on the back of that game.

Near WOG? He killed Sydney in the second half. I can think of at least 6 players who weren't as good.

Beating an average campaigner such as Naismith isn't so extraordinary, Sammy beat him it mattered, pathetic ruck contest, most to blame for coughing that up. Luenberger doesn't let that ball get to the back into Rampes lap think that's gunna cost him.
By "beat him when it mattered" I hope you mean shoved him illegally out of the contest. I hope you're not alleging that he dived at a time like that, not even Joe ****ing Daniher would have done that. If you are you are just daft.

Lol please, he's a big boy. If he didn't it was just too easy for Naismith, didn't look to me like he had to work too hard to get him out of it.

You're having a mare. He was clearly shoved illegally, if you think he would dive at such a crucial time you'd be a cynic at best and delusional at worst
