AFL Autopsy Round 14: Essendon defeated by Sydney (1 point)

If we compare this game to the one we played against Richmond then it's very exciting to see just how fast they are learning.

Put the result aside and it's very promising that we maintained our gameplan all the way through the contest and continued to take risks even when we did turn the ball over.

We were witches hats after that. I really don't get how Essendon let alone any time decide to not run out games.

The context of that game was massive for us, and we simply let it slip by being lazy/content. Very hard pill to swallow.
Agree with that.

The part that hurts the most is that the Sydney players except for Kennedy also stopped after Hurley kicked that goal. I started to get worried when I saw McKenna having his back towards a contest thinking that there would be a ball up instead of being ready to tackle. Kennedy came out and kicked it inside 50 that led to the goal that sparked the belief in the other Sydney players.

The good thing about this is that the boys have learned a huge lesson after that. Lucky it wasn't a final.

The only positive is that there is a lesson learnt. I expect Essendon to be nothing but ruthless against Brisbane. They need to run the game out until the siren goes, even if they are up by 50+.

If you are thinking of the same passage of play that I am McKenna had injured his finger. He looked like he was popping his finger back into place.

I thought it was strange also at first glance but on replay I saw that he was holding his hand.

It's actually pretty good and I know cos I've been there. What a bizarre thing to say.
Of course you'd like it.

I thought we were lucky to be within striking distance before we went on our run such was the extent of us being outplayed basically due to the bigger Sydney bodies smashing us in the contest. While we missed some opportunities, Sydney missed a lot more.

When we got on that run it was fantastic to watch. When we get the game on our terms and play our brand of footy it's scintillating. Alas we stopped.

The silver lining is we can review the last 5 minutes in detail leaving every player completely aware of what we should do in that situation going forwards. It burned to have got in a winning position and blow it like we did but if we learn from the experience, whilst being absolutely shitful to watch and no doubt experience on the field, it can turn into a long term positive.

Rohan out bodies players with the size and strength of Hurley. Gleeson never stood a chance.

If you stop frame the replay you can clearly see that at the moment the ball is kicked Gleeson is standing directly in front of Rohan, feet firmly planted and facing the ball. As the ball travels towards the pair at least one but possibly both of Rohans arms encircle Gleesons waist. At this point an umpire about 20 metres away has what appears to be an unimpeded line of sight to the pair and appears to be looking directly at them. As the ball continues on it's path towards them Gleeson is lifted and spun on Rohan's right hip to the point where Gleeson is turned 180 degrees (back to the approaching ball) and actually behind Rohan. Rohan then marks the ball on his chest with one arm as his other arm is still busy completing the judo move on Gleeson.

I may be out of touch but I thought any sign of an arm wrapped around a body in a marking contest warranted a free kick these days. Gleeson definitely never stood a chance, but I'd argue that Tom Hawkins wouldn't have stood a chance either given what was allowed to take place. For what it's worth, Gleeson definitely looks to the closest umpire immediately afterwards as if to appeal, but presumably he saw the arm outstretched in the wrong direction and guessed that there was no point.

edit: I'd also add it seemed a pretty clear hand in the back to TBC in the boundary throw-in ruck contest immediately prior.

Sucks to be in the position where we're nitpicking umpiring decisions when 4 minutes earlier we were 3+ goals up.

Those holding the man free kicks where the attacking player is all over the defender right near the goals are almost never paid. If Gleeson had've done what Rohan did (roles reversed) then he would have been paid a free kick against. If the same thing happens to Gleeson on the wing, then Gleeson gets paid the free.

who cares if the free against Gleeson wasn't paid? Fact of the matter is we should not have been in that position in the first place. When you are 20 points up with 3 minutes to go you need to ice the game.

We lost because we got content, plain and simple. Should be playing siren to siren 100% regardless of the score.

19 points.

But agree.

One i leave te umpring well alone. We had a good enough lead we just didn't defend it well enough. Only ourselves to blame, the the Gleenson call, the onyl reason i bought that up earlier in the thread was that I don't think you could blame Gleeson.

Wanted to wait to post in here as, like many others, I was pretty shattered immediately after the match. Having said that, some of the shit in here is unbelievable. We lost to the team that were runners up last year, arguably the form team of the comp right now (and if not then one of them) by 1 point on their patch. Any one of half a dozen things in that last few minutes (Zerett's clearance, Joe's kick, the smother, the kick to that red headed prick) go different and we win, and the vibe of this place is entirely different. FFS people get some perspective.

Additionally, it's the first real close game we've really had for a couple years (excluding the GC game late last year with a completely different team playing) so we will learn a lot from those last few minutes.

Yep. Heppell pretty much summed up what went wrong. We stopped. It's funny, Richmond were bashed for not flooding the backline in their close losses, we did flood the backline and it probably cost us the match.

Personally I don't think its been too bad in here since the loss. I hate people who bash BJ though, yeah his kick got smothered but that was a team **** up, not just his. Sydney had no right to win that game, yet they did because they didn't stop playing, we did.

Hopefully the guys understand that you never take the foot off. Sooner we realize that we will win actually contend.

Sucks that we were on the losing end this time but we have 8 winnable games ahead and we need to me merciless and we can make a real run at it.

Honestly I think all 9 can be won if you play Adelaide like Hawthorn did.
