Cordy really isn’t the answer - but neither is Howard -big problem (especially if we have an elite coach like Enright who can‘t improve them!)
Yes true we are fkd all over we need quality - Van Es might be a player later but in the meantime make a statement and fk Howard off - we haven’t played Cordy up back yet

Another big Friday night game on the big stage and we drop our bundle, I thought it would be better under Ross Lyon but tonight was more of the same.

To make it worse it was another Spud's game and we have let him down again, if only we could play with the sort of spirit that some of his teams had.

Some of our guys had a crack like Sinclair, Crouch, NWM, Webster, Battle and Butler but we had too many passengers again, too many to mention.

As I said before our finals chances aren't over yet but they will be soon if we keep playing like this, if we can't beat West Coast next week it's all over.

You are correct BUT unfortunately there is nothing up to the standard to ready come in (Bytel , Campbell & Billings in time & maybe Highmore)

List regeneration required!

Our midfield arent even B grade they are C grade and until we get some more talent in there we are going nowhere.

We dont have a lot of talent knocking the door down, but perhaps its time to bite the bullet and give Max Heath a few games. I know he's not ready but King needs some help. Opponents are working Hammer under the ball far too easily. Give Hammer a rest and play Moose for a few weeks. He wont apply the same pressure as Hammer, but he has a red hot crack.

Well I’m over my pity party. Looking at the positives. Jack Sinclair is an elite player…

That’s all I’ve got for now.

Feeling sad isn't exactly conducive to a winning mentality.
Nah. I’m not giving them that out.
The first year, maybe, it was totally emotional, but the majority of these players probably never even met Spud.

Wouldn’t hurt

I just don't understand how we make it look so hard. We just can't move the ball, this BS mark, stop, kick long to contest, stoppage and repeat is ******* doing my head in while teams zip around us with handball and free players everywhere.

Ross has bought nothing, we're a bit fitter so we can defend better, but nothing has changed when we've got the ball.
We have poor running players. And tonight we had really poor marking players. Can barely remember a contested mark, maybe Owens took one?

We are actually missing Clark for a bit of run and ball movement through the middle of the ground.

I’d like to see Leo at least get a run. Couple of games late between adams and van es as well. Keilor could get a taste against west coast etc. also peris at least to get game as a sub.

We have plenty of passengers would also get a wake up call at the same time as doing this.
I hear you brother - but ive been to training - Van Es, Keeler, Peris & Adams are miles off it currently (doesn’t mean they won’t make it)

The build up around the Spud game is all about bringing a community focus to the perils of depression.

No need for all that. Just rock up and watch how we perform in the game and the impact it has on our supporters.
Yep, not to be flippant but supporting this rabble could easily cause depression, same shite, different year.
I'm thinking in 2066 we might still be chasing our 2nd flag, some of us will pushing up daisy's by then.
Who knew when picked the Saints as our club back in our youth we'd be subjecting ourselves to a lifetime of football club failure.

I don't even really get the point of it either, "look out for mental health" is such an ambiguous and surface level message, reminds me of R U OK day.

Meaningful action would involve addressing the impacts of CTE, but the AFL will never do that lol

said this in the pre-game thread ...I think it's pretty simple really. Miss our targets by foot and turn the ball over and we get smashed.

It's been the same sh*t for a decade. Nick Riewoldt finished his career having the ball delivered round his ankles.

People say oh but Richmond won with chaos footy. I don't care.

There are parts of our game that are pretty simple. If you try to kick it to your bloke, and you kick it to their bloke, over and over again, you're pretty much f*cked.

We need to bring players into the side with skill and the ability to make good decisions

Even some of our "better" players are guilty

They talk Hill up as an elite kick but he misses targets regularly.

Brad Crouch has been really good for us but he'll often butcher it going inside 50.

Steele isn't a good kick.

We look absolutely shambolic because of our lack of ability to execute the basics of the game. again, it's been that way for a decade.

Ross is a good coach, but he's not getting it done at selection or with the positioning of players.

Sinclair should play midfield every week. Owens should join him there.

I feel like us winning games early might have hurt us long term. I can't see us playing finals this year. So build for the future.

One last thing. Why the hell is Robert Harvey our forwards coach? And it was his call that Owens isn't a midfielder? Good one harves

Alot got sucked into the nostalgia of having the old boys club back again. Remember this was all overseen by the guy who signed off on hiring and firing a coach inside 3 months. Bassat has absolutely no clue and thinking that because something worked 15 years ago it'll work now is hilarious.
Do you think Ratten and his merry men would be doing better?

Season centre bounce clearance records after this one

23.5% - Owens (8 centre clearances from 34 centre bounce attendances)
18.8% - Sinclair (21 from 112)
14.5% - Clark (12 from 83)
12.6% - Crouch (32 from 253)
12.5% - Phillipou (2 from 16)
11.9% - Steele (23 from 193)
11.3% - Ross (22 from 195)
8.7% - Gresham (11 from 126)
5.4% - Marshall (16 from 297)
4.8% - Bytel (1 from 21)
1.9% - Windhager (1 from 54)

So awful it's beyond words. Losing is one thing, but playing like that? Those players are supposed to be professional, it just isn't acceptable to be that weak-minded and inept.

To go into a game against West Coast and seriously doubt whether we can actually perform well is the cruelest cut of all. To see normally reliable players this off their game is extremely deflating.

Either Ross can't actually see the issues or is deliberately shielding the players from the harsh spotlight - either way I think the Saints supporters need to hear what their coach is going to do about this; time for some home truths.

No more Spud's game, no more marquee games at all, until this team has developed stamina and mental toughness. It's going to be a long road back.

Elephant in the room: Can this coaching group build something out of this mess? Hayes and Harvey were great players but the teams they were assistants in went nowhere. Does Ross have the passion to see this project out? He looks very disaffected so far, good for his heart but we need a bit fo the old Ross I think.

Yet another disgrace to Spud's legacy on primetime TV.

King was awful.

We have a tinpot shitcarter midfield and we're not going anywhere until that's rectified. Marshall is a woeful ruckman and what he provides around the ground isn't worth getting wrecked in the hitouts.

Sincs, Crouch and NWM are the only ones who can hold their heads up.

* I just hate what we've turned into yet again. I don't know how there's so much difference between our starts to the year and ends but it's just ridiculous.
You pointed out the key.

Ruckman, Marshall is poor man’s ruckman. Yes he can get a couple of hack kicks around the ground a take a mark or two, but he is not giving our mids any service. The 2020 final and first part of 2022 was mostly due to Ryder’s dominance in the ruck.

Also a couple of aggressive genuine mids will help. Crouch is carrying us but he can’t do it on his own. Steele is a reactive mid relying on his tacking to win the ball back. Same as Ross. Owens, Winghager, Philippou are just too green to hold the fort in the midfield.

I will now try
  • Stocker
  • Bytel
  • Winghager
  • Crouch
  • Steele to rotate
Stocker, Crouch, Bytel are all aggressive tough mids and Winghager can run. Just something different, because Steele, Gresham and Crouch are not getting it done.
