He’s played 1 game at AFL level coming back from an ACL. Give him some time.
Probably too harsh right after the game. My concern is that he seems to be hesitating and standing back when the ball is there to be won. Could be a few different things - slow reaction time (he often looks flatfooted), not confident yet in his body or unsure how to approach contests with the unpredictable HTB interpretations. Just doesn't look like a natural ballwinner to me and never really has. Maybe I'm missing something. Could still be a useful utility/half-forward type

If you had the chance to make the moves in the coach’s box for the rest of the season what moves would you make? Explain the move and who they replace. e.g.

Ryan Maric - He is elite user of the football by foot, I’d either like to see him in the backline, or midfield as the player you look to give the ball to, who wraps around the back as the give player, e.g. Lewis Jetta/Jordan Dawson role, noting I would expect him to be closer to Jetta’s number of possessions than Jordan, but with hopefully as much impact per kick. I think this means Duggan moves into the middle, or Witherdan maybe moves to wing. This moves Gaff or Sheed out of the team.

Culley - Move Sheed out and make Culley the go to tagger for the team. His big, and strong, and although not quick,is a marked improvement on Sheed as a Tagger. It has been spoken about multiple times his professionalism and determination to not only get drafted, but to recover from his knee. The mental toughness to be a tagger (and blocker for Harley and Kelly - Hello Rowan Jones), and have a role within the team, could see Culley become a premium stopper and valuable contributor to the team

imo JJ or Cole would be good candidates for the tagger. Both relatively zippy and tackle hard. Both can be liabilities playing defence.

You can’t have a KPP size player as a tagger imo.

Apologies all, probably should have put this in the following thread - Starting 23 - Post Bye

He's been racking it up the past few weeks int he WAFL. It's a pretty big step up into AFL though, especially for someone who's only played a handful of games.

Watching where he positions himself, marking prowess,4 goal RS nominee; I think he is more a forward than a mid.He strikes me as one of those blokes who always finds themselves in the right position .To be truthful I’d have him forward before Maric.

Looking at his film in the other thread he's always thereabouts. Daresay finishing this game unscathed was a big tick in the box for him coming back from the ACL. Pre-injury he was known for throwing his size around. Will be good to see how he develops as he regains AFL fitness and confidence in his body, I think he's got a fair bit to offer us either in his own right or in a supporting role.

We typically play well against them at Marvel.
The amount of close, annoying losses that we've had a lead late v them at that ground is SICKENING.

I hate Essendon.

They've lost 2 in a row, hoping they miss the 8 by %

20 years!! 20 years since their last finals win

Unlikely % is relevant to them given their draw against pies.

I dont mind bombers tbh, they are at least good to watch atm.

Brisbane and Freo both with a draw and competing for the 8, so defintely a chance percentage comes into play for them.

Not sure who I would prefer to play finals out of essendon and Freo. Maybe bombers to play and get bundled out first round and freo to miss altogether.

Funny isn’t it? So many calls for younger players to come in and then expect them to immediately be HR9. And sometimes on the back of being a Q4 sub or played out of position.
Personally didn't see any of the north game, but Culley's highlight's looked like he went okay?

He was fine, maybe a little bit rusty. 10 AFL game sheesh. 😬

I’d say ‘adequate’. But I’d be disappointed if he didn’t get several games. If he makes it … if … he’d be another low cost bargain (like Maric, Hutch, Long and Brockman).

This season should primarily be about exploring our list, achieving a percentage of say 75 or better with the wins being a bonus.

I was thinking about this the other day, I think Cole would make a decent tagger. Problem is we dont really have anybody who can do his role in the backline.
As much as he can be a liability we need some more backline depth before taking him out of there imo

If things come through i'll be heading to my first live game this year.
Didn't have a choice as the tix are for free but hopefully the boys can break the road curse with a win against the paper airplanes.

People keep saying this but I still haven’t seen anyone explain it in a way that isn’t just built on assumptions. It would make sense if he was attending centre bounces but he had zero CBAs today. What he did - and this was particularly obvious at the stadium - was bail us out of trouble on multiple occasions through sheer gut running. Perhaps it’s a straight replacement when Hunt returns but Gaff is actually doing nothing wrong right now. And it’s all well and good having a way we want to play but it starts and finishes with winning it in the middle, which we failed to do for the majority of the game
this.
comparing Gaff to Sheed is unfair. Sheed is a notorious 1-way runner who will literally stop and point when we dont have the ball then spark into action when we get possession. He refuses to defend.
Gaff never stops running and will give his all for the team, even if his speed has dropped. Having Gaff in the team is, if you had to pick 1 positive, a good example to the younger players to never give up

Sounds like a great tagger

Why the f**k are we playing Essendon again? Like play the same team a few rounds later before even playing other teams. The fixturing makes no sense.
The fixture has never made sense, and has only been made worse this year with that opening round break glass strategy for the NRL opening in Vegas

Hello all, excuse the intrusion. Many of us Bomber fans were hoping we’d get to witness Harley Reid play, he’s an amazing young talent and would’ve brought lots of fans through the turnstiles if he was playing..

I suspect it will be close than many naturally think. Essendon slightly ‘off’ mentally are vulnerable.

Is Tim Kelly playing ? He’s an important addition to your midfield group.

Will there be many Eagles fans in Victoria attending this game? Ticket sales are really strong so I was wondering if this is due to a large contingent of Eagles fans going to the game in a good family slot?

Anyhow, may the better team win 👍
