Slightly off topic, but allegedly the big leak that’s in the news this evening is largely players from WA clubs.

IF that’s true, does anyone find it interesting that this happens now? Think back to the Jack Crisp and Dusty incidents as well.

All three before they play Brisbane.

This is the AFL's preview of our game this week:

Looks like the Eagles have come back in since the image going around of them at $51 earlier in the week, after an initially non-miserable start against the Saints before collapsing to ensure their procession to Harley Reid continues apiece.

Here's some Fox Sports snippets:

Wait, what's the date on that article? 2022? It's Groundhog Day all over again - except somehow this time the Eagles are at longer odds. And for context, last year was a comfortable 75 point win.

I'm not sure what to add to this to make the game sound more interesting? Maybe leaving some footage of an older upset win in this on-going battle, that should hopefully let people know that anything can still happen and to not be complacent.

I think we should play in the Fitzroy jumpers tonight just to be sure. Hard to believe the side in 2007 struggled so much, given the quality players on our list.

Edit- I just had a look at our list in 2007. We had eleven premiership players running around, some handy newer players, but there was an issue with depth.

Please don’t beat Fitzroy’s record margin of 190 points!

The AFL must be embarrassed that a team they kicked out is still leader of the pack in the record book.

Would certainly be a nice percentage booster ;)

1. I'll be happy with a win
2. Anywhere from a 5 to 10 goal win would be dandy
3. Anything above a 10 goal win would be super.

OK - this is what I think we will be looking at tonight.

FB Starcevich, Payne, Lester
HB Coleman, Andrews, McKenna
C McCluggage, Robertson, Berry
HF Bailey, Daniher, Ashcroft
FF Rayner, Hipwood, Cameron

FOL McInerney, Neale, Lyons

INT Zorko, Lohmann, Wilmot, Fletcher

Sub: Fort

Given our injuries, this is the strongest team we could field “on form”.

If Payne is rested, Joyce to come in.

We can't really compare our injury list with that of the Eagles though. Whether their (formerly) top players are done or not most of them IIRC are injured anyway.
West Coast will likely have 11 of their 13 most experienced players available for this game and will also likely be more experienced on average than the Lions as a whole.
I am not for one minute thinking we will lose this game but they will put up a fight.

They were very competitive against the Saints last weekend.

I hadn't realised most of them had made their way back. I'm not sure how many of those 13 players would be getting a call up for most teams every week.
Comparatively, especially since we have dropped Rich and Gunston + Zorko being injured, our team seems to be on the low side for age and games played given our standing in the league.
I'm wondering if they will put up a fight, after they responded last week.

It all depends on if McGovern and Darling get up for the game.

I haven't watched them play in a while, but if I was choosing one to not get up for the game, I would prefer McGovern. I think our defence can easily account for Darling now but no McGovern (assuming he is still quality) would help our forwards run riot.

A couple of friends of mine who go for West Coast have noted that they tend to do better when they have more youngsters and less experienced guys.

Reference their win over Carlton at the SCG in 2021 and also their effort against us in the last round of 2021. Almost hit the front in the last quarter at the Gabba before we finally decided to start playing.

So not sure how relevant their team selection is, at either end of the spectrum. Suspect it is more about what goes on between the ears, for both teams I guess.

Which means it will be important to start well. If we can break them early in an emotional sense, there's a chance we could have a good day at the footy.

Wouldn't surprise me, a lot of their top end talent is pretty long in the tooth now.
