I must have missed the part where the player was dumped over the fence?
The player was tackled over the line and the umpire then paid "holding the man" because he grabbed the scruff of his collar and pushed him down. Definitely not a free kick.
but he didnt
awful decision by any measure - what exactly did the umpire think he saw? its not a question of intepretation here, whether a tackle slipped over a shoulder/neck etc.
Did he geuninely think he saw an act of overt aggression that wans't.
Staggeringly poor if not fanciful call.

Biggest blight in AFL is players using head as bait and getting richly rewarded for it over and over. Hawthorn are masters of it.

Yeah I know, I agree it wasn't a free. But I was reponding to where it said once it's out of play it shouldn't be a free (as in, if it's a free in in play, it should be a free out of play too), but I realise now I probably misread the post I quoted. Doh!
Mackie was alone for an unbelievably long period of time then.
