Been to both matches and pretty damn disappointed after my initial excitement. Flew up to Brissy and spent a week a there with Mitch. Club is extremely welcoming and family orientated.. Even gave us tickets to cirque du soleil which was sweet  got out to a training session and they worked hard and looked good. Very very young side who need strong leaders. I obviously was watching Mitch a lot tonight and he spent most of him time telling people to get into position and pointing out unmanned players.

(Also definitely need to bring in Josh Mcguinness. What a super star. So handsome)

Thought their body language from the get go was terrible today, coaches need to do more to force the team into something that resembles a 'battle ready' state. Our first two games were far more impressive last year, we were competitive.. scary to think we have gone backwards. We have lost a few players but we have also added a fair bit of quality too.

I worry for leppa, love him and think he is the perfect fit for us as coach, just can't think of the last coach to steer a team through a genuine rebuild and come out good at the other end, usually if there arn't pronounced improvements by the second year - things don't end up well.

This isn't a sack the coach post, he is our man, on so many levels, I just worry that very few coaches survive such rigorous re-builds with any sucsess, it's very hard to keep the faith getting flogged like that to many times in a season.

No dropping them is not the answer, I am just pissed they have been dominated two weeks in a row when the ruck is an area we should have an advantage in. As you say they both seem to play best when they are the sole ruckman so I'm not sure what the answer is other than for both of them to figure it out and find some form.

Leuey is not a key forward and really struggled today I thought and Martin looks a little lost, though he was much better this week compared to last. It really is crazy how much a really good KPF would help us right now as it would allow them to play as a resting tall rather than a traditional key forward.

Yeah, fair enough. I wonder how long Leppa can play the two pure rucks if we are losing the ruck battle. The comp has gone away from using having two ruckman in a team and starting using a big forward or defender as backup since it allows you another more versatile type in the team. You could argue that the new style of ruckman (including Leuey and stef) is more versatile as well but obviously haven't seen that from our two this year. Can't tell how much this is correlated with the performance of the team or midfield though.

Yeah, I'm concerned too, but I'm also confident that the people in senior positions at the club now have a pretty good idea of what's going on and will give Leppa time.

In other thoughts, I still expect we'll have good patches through this season, and it's worth remembering that we should still have Rocky, Pearce, Beams, Redden and Rich together for quite a few years.

We got jumped by Collingwood in a game that we should've been more competitive in and were throttled by North who at their best have beaten the best sides in the comp. I'm really disappointed, but I wouldn't write off the season just yet.

Just saw the inexperience thread...one limb of reasoning which may explain why we lost...or at the very least why it was unlikely we would be able to go with them for 4 quarters...avg games played Lions 65.1 vs North 129.4...

I believe in Leppa - he has a plan and he did wonders last year under very difficult circumstances. Our best two players for the last 3 years are in the stands injured. But saying all that we were a disgrace today. We don't do the basics right - man up - hit targets - shepperd. Our clearance work is appalling. The players may think they are working hard but they only have to watch their opponents to see they are being out run and out worked. Lewis Taylor worked his back side off today and is the smallest player in our side. Luey just gets bumped of the ball like he is a 16 year old kid playing his first afl game. If we are going to play Luey up forward play him from the goal square and kick it high. He hasn't got the strength or mobility to play centre half forward. McStay was truly awful today. Refused to lead and often watched his opponent just run off. He needs to work a hell of lot harder. Mayes i have no idea whats happened to this guy? Doesn't seem to work hard enough and looks to have lost all confidence.

Lots of love for Leppa on here but apart from making the place more friendly what has he done on the park? He was given a pass last year despite us winning less games out of what was in essence the same team. This year we have started very badly again. He is supposed to be a defensive coach but our defensive structures have been terrible especially through the midfield. I am not writing him off yet but the pressure has to be on him.

One who I am writing off is our fitness team. Is Burton still there? If so he should be escorted from the premises immediately. Every single year since he arrived we have started the year way behind in the fitness stakes. We are smaller bodied and not as fit (despite recruiting elite runners). Our fitness team need to be replaced with someone with some idea how to prepare a team to play the modern game.

On the players they were terrible. Not a lot more needs to be said. A long visit to the Room of Mirrors is in order for those blokes.

Neither of our rucks is a forward. Surely the coaching staff should have twigged to that by now. Further Martin gets smashed every time he is up against a good ruck technician. In games like tonight Leuey should take 70% of the ruck contests and Martin should be given licence to roam. That way we play to their strengths rather than weaknesses.

Christensen, Robinson and D Beams have all remarked how tough our preseason training was. Can't be all attributed to the heat and humidity can it? If you're down on confidence it can look like a fitness issue. Didn't have any problem running out the game against the Pies, and in the NAB Cup we looked up and running. Got to be more to it.

You're right, we might be 4-4 after 8 rounds, we need to keep our heads. You would think we would come out running through Brick walls the first month, but confidence is a funny devil.

How different are the fitness regimes overall from club to club - if you know or want to hazard a guess?

Yeah, exactly.

The reality with younger sides is that it seems to go one way or the other. Everything goes right or everything goes wrong. It seems like consistency and the ability to arrest a slide are two things that just come with time. I'm reluctant to slam the senior guys for that because there is only so much any few players can do when the team is spooked out of running.

If we get a decent patch of the season with our first choice midfield healthy and our young players with some consistency in their roles, I think we'll see a lot of improvement. If we get that time and things don't improve at all, then maybe it's time to start asking serious questions about our direction. Right now I think it is a little too early. It stings, because in the back of my mind I was fooled into thinking we'd race up the ladder this year. Clearly we won't, but there is still a lot of time to make big improvements and keep grinding along that long road to having a stable, experienced team.

OK, so straight from the game so pretty raw notes here. Sat high on level three so I could see exactly what was happening.

Lester and Paparone are D50 liabilities when the likes of Merrett and Gardiner are not playing. The 7 goals Waite kicked were more like 2-3 against a seasoned team. Touching on that, this game had the biggest differential in age for round 2: North average age 27, Lions 23 11months. That's 3 full seasons of development.

Martin and Leuey just isn't working at the moment. Only 3 games in to the project and it's highly likely one will get injured shortly so that may be a blessing in disguise. Martin battled manfully against Goldstein who clearly took the points.

Our red time efforts (no so much endeavour, but ability to produce 2nd/3rd efforts) in the first quarter killed the game off - after that, it was circle work for North.

Our kicks and handballs continually drop short so we're double handling and fumbling a lot more than we should be. It's never actually missing a target over their head so I feel it's a confidence thing rather than technique.

Bewick was pathetic again Nahas; only the 2 kicks whilst Nahas has 22 possessions and a goal.

Robinson will be a real asset once the likes of Rocky and Hanley are back; he's a terrific, enthusiastic player who gives his all.

Mayes needs a confidence boost; still, 8 possessions 7 marks wasn't too bad a return on a night like tonight.

Christensen was everywhere; just hope we don't blow him up trying to fill the many gaps we have.

D. Beams copped a tag again and conceded the points.

Close got injured late in the second from memory, had 2 possessions at the time. His injury was caused by propping to pick up a simple kick that landed in front of him instead of on the chest.

McGrath; whilst I loved the courage running back with the flight, I really did - but that's about all he did.

McStay dropped a couple early when we were still in the game. Disappointing. Then they were able to put 2 on him and one in front. No hope. Ended up losing the F50 count by 13, but the differential was only 5 at H/T, yet we were nearly 10 goals behind

Redden tried his heart out, as did Rich, but Rich seemed preoccupied organising the team around.

We're not a good enough team to be without Rockliff, Hanley and Merrett and remain competitive against a finals bound outfit

I honestly would rather Leuy leave the club... He is just a awful footballer due to his softness and is one of the most over-rated "potential " types in recent memory.
Given their size, I think it would be a close run thing between he and Lester for softest at the club.

How different are the fitness regimes o verall from club to club - if you know or want to hazard a guess?
They would all be based on similar principles but the execution is different depending on the philosophy of the high performance staff. I would suggest looking at our team that we would place an emphasis on functional and dynamic strength simply based on our list profile which would mean we will generally be a weaker team in the contest but should be more advanced in repeat efforts and agility based running. Hard to tell though.
