Recent history for Saints/Pies says that it’ll be a close game.

2023 Saints 64 lost to Pies 70
2022 Saints 85 lost to Pies 102 (scores level in the 4th qtr)
2021 Saints 70 defeated Pies 61

That’s an avg margin of 10.6 points across the last 3 seasons, and it would make sense on paper for tonight to be another tight game. We’re well into this.

Fun/unsurprising fact, I know this is technically our home game, but we have only played Collingwood at Marvel once in our last 6 meetings. That was in the 2022. The next time after that? 7 years ago in 2018 back when it was called Etihad.

Arguably last weeks game could provide an edge for us this week, we know what it’s like to come up against a competitive older side full of stars, premiership players and matured composure (AKA Geelong), and that’s what got Geelong over the line this week, and it’s what has gotten Collingwood over the line against us the last couple of times we have played them. We should be well braced.

-----

Our last outing against them, gather round 2023, we lost by a goal. N Daicos had 42 disposals, so you'd think Ross & co have a plan for him.

Our best players were:
  • Marshall (25 disp, 7 marks, 7 clearances, 32 hitouts)
  • Crouch (33 disp, 2 goals, 16 cont. possessions) - a great game stats wise, shame he's injured/underdone currently.
  • Battle/Wilkie (both had very similar games for intercepting backmen, with a combined 48 disposals, 24 marks, 1000+ metres gained, 19 intercept possessions)
Our worst player?
  • Gresham (80% time on ground for 7 disp and 36 metres gained at 57% disposal efficiency, lmao)
Higgins, Caminiti and Crouch were our only multiple goal kickers with 2 each.

-----

That 2023 team had Howard, Caminiti, Clark, Butler, Paton, Gresham and Bytel (sub) in the team.

Opposed to our team tonight which replaces those players with Wilson, Henry, Sharman, King, Membrey, Bonner and Jones.

Cordy moved from forward to the backline in the interim.

The way I see it, in comparing to last years side that lost by a goal to the (at the time undefeated and eventual premiers) Collingwood:
  • Membrey replaces Caminiti (upgrade)
  • King replaces Cordy (upgrade)
  • Bonner replaces Paton (upgrade)
  • Henry replaces Gresham (upgrade/neutral)
  • Jones replaces Clark (neutral, speed boost)
  • Cordy replaces Howard (neutral/downgrade)
  • Wilson replaces Butler (neutral/downgrade, lose pressure & experience, gain endurance)
  • Sharman replaces Bytel (n/a different players, and Bytel was the sub)
Seems wild that we played without King, Membrey and Sharman in that 2023 game.

-----

One thing I expect to see tonight? Elite speed and endurance from our boys at the spacious MCG. We are fit and fast, with several players who are well suited to the spread. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Jack Sinclair, Mason Wood, Liam Henry, Darcy Wilson, Ryan Byrnes, Zak Jones, Riley Bonner, Brad Hill. If we are on, then expect to be feasting on that spectacle.

All eyes to the midfield to make it happen. Defence should be as elite as usual, and we have the cattle up forward to compete. Should be an interesting game to say the least. Go Saints!
Great write up

Crouch out is coming out is depleting our weakest area and looked our BOG last time. That said I reckon Lyon has this game in his sights. We rested Sincs for it. Lyon is also quite ego driven and I reckon he's sick of all the hype around Fly. He was pissed off about losing in gather round and it has fired him up. Don't be surprised if this is his early season pet project that he's been working on for a while and we come out firing.

Great post. You should do a preview every week.

I’m going to keep the pressure on Max, never a better time to put yourself in the Coleman conversation.

It’s why we recruited ya.

Had a dream last night that Naicos copped a hip to the skull in the first qtr, eyes rolling back

I had a similar dream except it was a knee to his lower back by Members who was awarded a free kick for below the knees and Members went back and slotted the winning goal after Naicos went off injured and didn’t return.

Should be a good match up if Moore lines up on him, maybe Frampton just mauls him all night.
One interesting stat from Max last week was his MGs…one of the highest so you’d expect Moore will be the only player would could match him if he plays a similar game up the ground.

Probably means though we need Members and Sharman to be the connector and converters. Hopefully Sharman doesn’t have 2 horror games in a row.

Off to the G tonight. First time in the Members area for 10 years.

Last time was a f***ing disaster - ultra expensive drinks, ordinary food and Hawthorn winning by 145 points.

You've been warned!!!
Not to derail thread but boy oh boy was that one of the darkest days. Inexplicably insipid. Forever burned into the memory sitting there that day I was too stunned to leave.

An absolute horror day.

I made a promise to myself not to go that day and thank the Lord I didn't.

I knew we'd be destroyed.....and we were.

I'll fess up and say I didn't check the score during the game.......I didn't know the final score until I checked the "Age" website about 6 pm.

The "Age" headline was "Saints destroyed"

I nearly keeled over when I saw we were belted by 145 points.

My brother from my extended family txted me minutes later saying...."Go Hawks"

I was going to respond with "Go and get ducked"

It's sort of heart warming to know you have such a humble brother.....NOT.

:) ;)

I like this version, doesn't involve any suspension of one of our players.

Will be 1230 here in Dubai. In front of my telly. I am ever hopeful, but as normal for me, cautious. My head is telling me we will win. But my heart has been broken that often I am not sure. Just hoping our forwards can get in the ascendancy with enough supply.

King will have a massive game at some point. Tonight would be good!

Kinda feels like a "breakout game" kinda night.

Haven't had too many of them over the past decade.

Not sure who it is though...

I hate to say it the dream turned very St Kilda when Members was sent directly to the Tribunal and Members was given a life in prison sentence.

QC Jack Rush argued the precedent of Stocker/Danger which just angered the tribunal committee for having the audacity to drag Naicos name into disrupte and subsequently increased the verdict to the death penalty.

Sounds like he got of lightly then

Sharman was reasonable last week, just got moved all over the ground to plug gaps by Lyon, and our forwards had limited chances due to the crap midfield effort early. I think the G is his ground.
