I stand by what I said on selection night. Fort was very unlucky to be dropped. Last week he had 14 disposals, 12 hit outs, 3 clearances, kicked a goal and had 1 goal assist against last year’s Grand Finalists.
Today, Day had 7 disposals, 11 hit outs, 1 clearance, kicked a behind and had 1 goal assist against last year’s wooden spooner West Coast.

On form, Fort should replace Day next week. Day needs to go back to the reserves and kick some goals before he is selected in the seniors again.
I would be interested to know what McIvor and martinson make of this. They are wise.

We were disgustingly horrible in the first quarter.

It was apparent early, that the Eagles were "on" but we appeared not to adjust to the reality that they weren't there to be cannon fodder for us

Slow, reactive , sloppy skills and poor decision making. I couldn't believe the way we kept handballing back inside into traffic instead of going inside out . We got what we deserved with that 5 goal to nil lead to the Eagles. I thought Answerth was one of few Lions players who could claim to have put in 100% to quarter time

Now that I'm in complaint mode, the 12.10 time slot was a shocker. I felt for the players of both sides to have to ply their trade in the stinking heat and humidity

How the hell do the reigning Premiers get such a shitty time slot?

Now for the good stuff.

We stabilised in the second quarter and put the foot to the floor in the second half to finally put to the sword put a very game and gallant Eagles outfit. If they play with that commitment every week, they'll be more than just nuisance value.

In the end, I actually found it difficult to limit my player votes to 5!

Lachie was easy but the other four weren't

I settled on Zorko, Lester, Andrews and last but not least J Berry.

Bez busts his guts for this team week in and week out

Had 26 disposals today,4 tackles and an equal team high 12 marks, a testament to the ground he covered to present himself.

Apologies to Dunks, Cal Fletch and even Logan Morris who slotted 3 clutch goals. That lad is going to end up a very serious player when he grows up.

Finally, we now in our favoured 5th position on the ladder, so we have the rest of the Comp exactly where we want them:footy::)

My personal favourite was when we pegged back the deficit to seventeen points down in the third quarter today, she said, “That’s as close as they’ve been since the start of the game.” She really is woefully out of her depth in commentary.
I’d had enough at 1/4 time and got the Bluetooth speaker out and listened to the Sen app. Easy to sync to Kayo. Good riddance Kelly and Derm!

I know Harley is immature but I'd love to get him at a club like ours. The guy has strength and breakaway pace and just needs the appropriate mentoring alongside good players to be an absolute gun.
Harley Reid needs a system team where he can be the cream. He's currently in a team where he has to play the messiah and if he comes to Essendon it'll be the same again.
So he could work well with us, sydney, Hawks or even clubs like Demons or Pies.

How good is Frog, Can't see Doedee making the team unless they shuffle Payne forward or Starc doesn't come back for a bit.
Lester, along with Zorko of course, was the most proactive out there when we were behind on scoreboard. Lester was also sticking those tackles in the last line of defense when Eagles were close to a fast break and making sure that tackle stuck and there was a turnover.

Our mids and forwards could learn a lot from Lester's game yesterday. There was no trundling or corralling, he went for it when he needed to.

We were disgustingly horrible in the first quarter.

It was apparent early, that the Eagles were "on" but we appeared not to adjust to the reality that they weren't there to be cannon fodder for us.

Brad Johnson said we were walking back defensively about 3 minutes in to the game.

First half I liked Answerths pressure- was piling it on when others were standing still.. wouldn't be in the stats sheet though.

I believe it's partly due to us missing Cameron and Lohmann. They've become integral to the chase and tackle not just in forward 50 but between arcs as well. Lohmann in particular sometimes gut runs all the way back to D50. All it takes is the perceived pressure for the ball carrier to make a mistake, which is why I don't like our mids sauntering along in parallel. I'd rather they go in and put a meaningful effort to stop the ball movement, see if they can cause a wonky kick resulting in a turnover at the next contest.

I also worry about the level of tiredness we're going to carry into next game. That was a heavy workload for everyone playing out there, I'd rather we get some fresh legs in next round. Cameron, Lohmann if fit, from VFL crew looks like Tunstill, Fort and Gardiner had good games.

Yes , Bez was good all game , I gave him votes too , he was everywhere in that first half .

Incredibly humid, don't underestimate how hot it was, jaustsitting in the crowd we were sweating and we were in the shade. For the players and the crowd out in the sunny patches I was feeling for you - it was sweltering. If you just look at the 1 minute after the final siren goes the players just stop, no celebrations everyone from both teams just stand there of collapse to the turf.

Jasper got my top votes, he was great fro the whole match. Lachie got going and was great and Cal was my 3rd vote getter. When we get latter in the year we will appreciate the points from our first 2 matches and acknowledge no premiership hangover and the fighting spirit but none of us will say they were great games.

Try as they may to make the flag unfurling a big deal and a spectacle that was ridiculous before the game but it was good to see Charlie, Loman and Starc there all seemingly walking and interacting with no obvious issues.

Ok done - next week now.

The only thing worse than that first quarter was listening to kelli underwood commentate that game. Apparently, we beat the suns in the grand final according to her pre-bounce commentary
My son calls such things a 'Taylorism'!

I went out to Springfield Central on Saturday and Fort was our best player in the twos but he took few marks. His form didn't really insist that he should get a senior spot up forward.
Tunstill was very good and young Marshall looks a player for the future.
With Charlie and Lohmann coming back I cannot see them promoting either Fort or Tunstill. Day should be giving a few games.

Underwood is like listening to nails on a chalkboard and the basic knowledge errors compound the problem.

There are some great female commentators around in other sports, how did anyone at Fox listen to her and think - yep she's the answer in the interview stage? I have no problem with female commentators, just hire one who doesn't sound like Underwood.

She is a female version of Matt Thompson who commentates the NRL on channel 9 and is just as hard to listen to. At least he is on free to air, so you can swap to Fox if you want to (though they are almost as hard to listen to). Underwood being on Fox means you have no choice unless you link to SEN or another radio commentary...or play on mute.

I am including in my best 5 two of our underrated players Morris and Payne. Morris contested all day, often against McGovern (although like our tall backs opponents do change at times), took a great mark and kicked a couple of really important goals. I thought he might struggle, second year and still young with the closer attention, but Morris is going very well, and have we signed him?
Payne again showed why he is so important to the team defence. Allowed Harris to mark inexperienced players such as Reid and Hewett. Which allows Harris to do what he does best, and he had a good game. Payne constantly takes the oppositions number 1 forward, limits the opposition choices when seeking to find their I50 main forward.

Agree, and also gave him a vote in the best 5.
I was super happy with Logan's game.
He's developing beautifully and can see him becoming a complete player pretty quickly.
His set shot kicking looks to have improved considerably too.

I gave Morris votes on the basis he kicked some really tricky goals which helped our momentum massively. Cal played great but had some easier goals out the back. That’s how the distinguished the two.

It is easy to dismiss Cals goals as easy out the back if all he does is hang out deep and wait for opportunities. But he is also very big defensively and gets around the field.

His OTB goals come from hard work and being able to read the play well enough to break away from his defender.

He is a very smart player.

I’m not dismissing it at all. Just because I valued Logan’s goals more than Cals it doesn’t mean one is good and one is bad.

Both were great, but for this game I valued Logan’s finishing ability on those two really tough goals more. Especially in the context of the game.

Cal had the more complete game and in a different match I’d give him the votes.
