Autopsy Round 2, 2025: Hawthorn give Carlton the Blues

I think also they trying to limit the effectiveness of D'Ambrosio, Amon, Impey, Day etc.

Basically they're going man on man because they believe our system will beat their system. Man on man is an admission of strategic failure in my view, and an attempt to drag the game back to basics, reduce our strengths rather than enhance theirs.

When they had to win the game last night, D'Ambrosio got off the lease, Day started to win clean clearances. The things that open up the whole ground happened for us. The last three teams have tried the heavyweight slog. It's not an approach that will get them 4-5 goals up. It's an approach that will keep them within 2-3 goals
Geelong have the style to beat us as do GWS, quick clean efficient ball movement. It doesn't allow Sicily and co to set up properly which is why both gave us issues last year. Both have outside speed in abundance which I wouldn't have said about Geelong 2-3 years ago.

I think people are struggling with understanding how good we are travelling at the moment. They see us as a 7-10 team.
I’ve seen it written constantly that we don’t have any stars and we just got a team full of role players.

I think the downplaying of the talent we have is actually quite funny.

I recently saw Jack Riewoldt having a morning coffee and mentoring chat with Charlie Curnow, Sam Walsh, Patrick Cripps and some other Carlton dude.
You could tell from the commentary he's wanting these guys to do well
He's all-in.

Pretty sure I heard him say On The Couch a couple of weeks ago that the Blues were his tip for the flag this season.

Yeah this needs to stop. Every time a player successfully tackles Watson, they seem to feel like he needs to have his head buried in the turf. Can't just ignore it forever umps.

They're just jealous. Wiz has already more talent on his pinky, than most average AFL players.

I'm super happy he's bringing toughness and pressure to his game, which will most likely see him finish his career as a premiership and all-time great.

That kick from Mass is legitimately unfair, players aren’t supposed to be able to make that kick. Him and Amon are such a pleasure to watch use the footy.

He's like a Matt Suckling with speed.

Sis and dimma have no chance at AA with no set position. I love what it brings

If the best defender and forward in the competition can't be named as AA, the award is stupid.

If there's one positive about Day missing games last season, it's the improvement in other players having to play the sweeper role.

I know people on here don't like Champion Data or Hoyne, but two seasons ago on SEN, Hoyne said that when Day was in the middle, Hawks had the best centre clearance differential in the league.

Role players = we all know our role = a team that knows what to do and where to position
This is a good thing

You're not a star unless you do too much trying to cover for your teammate's weaknesses apparently.

Yep, they are the two sides that will trouble us the most

It is absolutely. But I’ve noticed it’s also a way of downplaying the talent levels of so many of our players.

😂, yeah because Sicily Newcombe and Day as example wouldn't get a game at other clubs what a load of delusional rubbish. The head****ery is in full swing by the sounds of it.

Mackenzie looks incredible on the outside. Always manages to generate that little bit of extra time to make a good decision.

I thought his contested work was a little disappointing though. In a hard, contested game, he only had 3 tackles, 3 contested possessions and 1 clearance.

It’s definitely his next area of improvement and will elevate his game massively.

Gee the salt mines over at the Saints board is excellent reading :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy:
Yeap! The Aints and the Norf boards are essential reading.

Got a laugh out of this from the St.K board...

Remember when everyone said we couldn’t draft/develop a key defender

Well…

This is where our strength is in my opinion.

Tag day newc, ward and frenchie step up.

Negate sis move him forward.

Tag Moore or mass or impey or Amon CJ and battle bob up.

Arguably we may not have any elite players but I rate no one in our best 27 lower than B+. Add to that a connected and well drilled playing group it is a nightmare to combat. So much time would be given to negating our strengths by the opposition they move further from the way they want to play.

Then add in the so many different looks we can go with in game and I think that’s when it gets really hard to plan for.

I haven’t had a chance to watch the game yet as I was at the espy watching Speed last night, but I did happen to see a goal where Curnow got a free kick for what I couldn’t even deem to be worthy from CJ, and then the Carlton player didn’t even know that an advantage had been given?

What was the free for?
One of his hands pulled down Curnow’s shoulder I think.

Just saw the 19 on the ground thing. Really poor from our interchange team - they need to be alert to that and it was an umpiring error that saw us not punished further.

Outrage seems excessive though. It only occurred when players were resetting for the bounce, and 6-6-6 meant it was never impacting play. I reckon I've had about 4 Carlton supporters frothing at the mouth saying we should be stripped of points lol.

the places hawk fans have to go to understand this helplessness is Eagles & Blues forum, both groups upset with us holding 1st and 2nd round picks of blues.
Other forums to enjoy some schenfreude are clubs who though they were ahead of us but now are realising we are likely Top 4. Namely Saints/Dons/Dogs/Port/Crows
