Isn't it great to see Freeman taking contested grabs up forward. It is such a shame he didn't get to play the majority of the season this year. He will improve next year but it'd be nice to get a mature option to take the number 1 defender for him. Robinson with 15 tackles is incredible. He has been such a good pick up. I really think Liam Dawson has been quite good since coming back into the 1's. After his initial stint I though gee he could take a while but he has come back in and looks right at home TBH. No doubt there is plenty of upside on our list moving forward.

A cool morning after a lovely win, and I am thinking to myself geez it is nice to only feel like I need to pick midfielders and forwards as my top 5 for this game.

Hard to believe Andrews is on his first year. I actually had the thought last night: Uh oh, here comes trouble and we haven't got Clarke back there. No, it's alright Andrews is there.

That is a fairly good way to be in terms of building a team that can grow together. Andrews, Cutler, Freeman, Dawson - first and second year players standing up and showing potential to be part of our next winning team.

Interesting that Leppa said McStay is a defender. We really are stacked down back with young talls now. With Hipwood also likely to come in that makes another likely defender. Interesting times ahead and some real depth building in Defense.

Who do we take out to include the 2 beams boys, cian hanley, robertson, gardiner, clarke, green, mcgrath and leuenberger (if he stays) in our best 22. All of them either need experience or are just at the top of their game.

Apart Cutler the other three are academy boys and hopefully the next couple of years will bear even more fruit.

Just great to wake up this morning after the Lions victory. Can only imagine what the boys are thinking.
Good to see Jamison make a statement re Robbo. Robbo was definitely upset.

If we play like we did last night we're going to be competitive in the last few rounds. Would love to see us beat the doggies.

The Hope is back!

It was great to see Sammy Mayes get real reward for effort this week. I have watched Mayes closely over the previous 2 games and really though his work rate had improved but he wasn't being used. Typical football though, you keep fronting up in the right positions and you will eventually be rewarded. Loved his game last night.

Liam Dawson, sheesh he could be anything, fantastic set of hands and is an elite kick of the ball. History will show he was a bargain as a second rd pick through the academy.

Harris Andrews- Barring Jessie Hogan there is not a player under 21 in the league I would swap Harris for. His ability to read the flight of the football and mark the ball is completely ELITE. Andrews is also a competitive animal. We have a Dustin Fletcher clone here. We should embrace it, backline 4 life.

Robinson's work at the clearance has shocked me, he ability over the last 6 weeks to get his hands on the footy first is uncanny. Stefan Martin cannot go anywhere, he has 5 years left in him and will be All Australian at some stage.

Finally Jono Freeman, he is a monster unit, a good pre season and finding another foil for him next year with either Walker, Schoenmakers or a player of this ilk, gives us hope that we might have a functioning forward line.

I could feel good vibrations early on when we just moved the ball forward at all costs, footy is simple game!

If it is then why, in the Saint Kilda game, were the players told to slow it down after the break when they were doing that overlapping handball game?
Robbo post match said Leppa gave them permission to just run... have no idea why he limited the Lions strength for the whole damn season TBH.

Did the less flashy work inside with 31 possessions(14 contested), 10 clearances and 7 tackles. Slotted a goal as well. 84% disposal efficiency and took 5 marks. All in all 121 fantasy points to highlight what I thought was a really good game from Jack:thumbsu:

I honestly didn't notice him much, but the play all night seemed to be at far side from my seat. Thought Robinson and Zorko were more impressive personally.

Be interested in what people thought of O'Brien's game? Works his back side off but is very limited. Seems to get caught with the ball a lot. Did some nice link up work at times. Hard to see a spot for him in our best 22 going forward.

I watched him with interest, he was sub last week after a 50 disposal effort in the NEAFL the week before, happy that he got the start this week.

Interestingly he started forward in the 1st QTR with not to much influence.

After our capitulation in the 1st QTR Leppa gave the whole team a fair dinkum spray at QTR time and he moved Obrien onto the ball, asides from Robbo, he had a pretty solid game I thought, made a couple of mistakes, but I would be surprised if he didn't keep his spot next week. He is a hard nut and loves getting inside.

I have been commenting on this all year, some games we are told to 'run' others we are told to 'go slow'. It's all about not sacrificing our defensive structures. Sometimes leppa gives them half a game to run the goes defensive or visa verses, ala bombers game at eitihad. I think we might have had a real chance againts the cats had we been given the green light and not been directed to over possess.

It's all about whether the coaching group believe we can win or not and an effort to protect a 100 point loss if it's a latter.

I've spoken about noticing this all year, we are being coached like it's flicking through gears on a mountain bike.. It will pay off in the end, the players are being taught to control the tempo and use all three phases on instinct.

Againts Gold Coast we were clearly given license.

A lot of other posters argue it's not a decision by the coaches, but determined by our confidence and the other teams pressure - but IMO it is whole heartedly controlled.

The only shame is I think we could have won a couple more games if allowed to use what our more obvious strength is - however there also would have been 3-4 more 80 point loses and 10 goal againts 1/4s

It definitely seemed that they were instructed to get the ball into the corridor and link up with hand balling and move it quickly. I think it might have had a lot to do with a complete lack of pressure and defensive running from the Carlton midfield which allowed us to do this.

We'll see McStay move back into the forward line at some point. As a defender he reads the ball well, is a good kick and provides some run. But he's not a natural at stopping other people getting to the ball.
Like I said last week, it looks a bit like the way Gunston started off at Hawthorn. He had a bit of trouble getting into the side as a permanent forward so spent a fair bit of time as a loose defender who got plenty of the ball.

Yeah but that's what I am saying. We are instructed to 'go' or 'no' based on 2 things, 1 a teams ability to destroy us, and 2 a teams ability (even if not elite opposition) to hurt us on the re-bound.

I think that whilst obviously pressure determines our ability to do it - you can see the intent straight away.

Really is there? I thought there were only 20 games in am AFL season? I don't see either team winning another game and we just gained a bunch of percentage on them.

We're now 3% above them. Our run home is harder than theirs, so you'd expect us to lose by more to those 3 teams.

It's still quite likely.

I don't know why that makes you flat ... we had a huge win.

The mindset and style of a team is totally changed when they have a professional forward unit to play to.Freeman and McGuaun both know how to lead and make space. There is actually some incentive to get the ball down there, not to mention the morale boost when you score ! How things change.
