He has played primarily half back this year.

He's excellent at it regardless. It frees Sinclair or Hill if we get him. He uses the ball well, cleans up errant balls and just has that excellent vision. I think he's the type that improves the list and composure.

He is an excellent player and I wouldn't be disappointed if we got him. But he would cost about 700k for 4 years and I'd prefer we put that into our midfield than into the area of the ground we are fairly decent.

All that said, seems like it is between Melbourne and Fremantle for him so this is a pointless conversation.

Yeah the character thing bothers me a lot. However JDG ticks every other box for us. I’d like us to seriously consider making him a good offer. He’s worth the risk.

I rate JDG but if he's nearly a full time mid as someone suggested he's quite low production and uneven. I know having 40 low impact disposals is overrated but the money being asked for him as far as a full time mid is very high.

He's only had 2 games over 25 possessions (27 twice) this year and only kicked 12 goals for the year. He seems to have dropped away. Gresham who every one seems to think is a spud now has had 8 games over 25 (including two 30 possession games and a 32 possession game) and 16 goals.

Fair. Has he played as a mid full time though? He’s not had a good year on field but the off field stuff wouldn’t have helped. I think he needs a change of scenery and that should help him perform to his potential.

Someone said his centre bounce attendance was really high. There seemed to be two conflicting sets of numbers on it though.

I’ve never once posted any “inside info” here in my >10 years but my (very good) mail on Billings is that he did not respond well to the dropping. Obviously he was quite upset by being dropped, as any player would be, but instead of directing that towards driving himself to get better, he was more angry at the situation; petulant, for a lack of a better word.
It's been clear he hasn't responded the right way from being dropped. I think he's part of our poor on-field leadership culture.

The purpose of a football club is, rather inarguably, to win premierships. I don’t think anyone here believes a premiership is possible for this club in 2022, so I’m strongly in the camp of all decisions being made for the 2023 season and beyond. Even if we miraculously made the 8, we’ve clearly demonstrated that we’re not a true contender and, whilst I appreciate the benefit of making finals for a list’s confidence, it’s clearly not the panacea to a struggling club as proven by our 21/22 seasons after making the finals in 20.

Playing to flat out win every game from here on in is simply risking key players getting injured and heading into next (pre)season underdone, risking copping a worse fixture, and risking getting a worse draft hand. Now is the time to trial any potential gameplan tweaks, positional changes, or fresh players that might have been otherwise considered unviable.
I get what you're saying but it's not that black and white. Getting a game of finals experience into the younger guys might be the difference next time we play finals. Telling them to lay off now might carry shit form into the start of next season. You just don't really know so it's better to go for it while it's still possible.

Could not agree less with this to be honest. We are still right in the mix to play finals in a year where the race for the premiership is wide open.. and you're wanting to put the cue in the rack to save the legs for 2023? It's still July!

This loser mentality amongst fans is really tiring. If results go as predicted this week we'll finish the round in the 8. Defeatism is endemic, and some people here would do well to have a look outside while the sun is shining. We've just managed to beat a team at home for the first time in 12 years, we've gone 2-0 in Perth for the first time since Riewoldt was in his prime as well.. lets have a look at the half full glass for once please.

He's very inconsistent luckily. He can look star quality or spud depending on the week. He reminds me of Nick Larkey. On their day they can both look absolutely incredible but other weeks you don't even notice them.
He averaged 3 goals a game before the last 3 weeks. Where he had a 0 goal game against GWS in torrential rain. Then kicked 5 in a half against Adelaide. Then 0 again in the wet and 1 against North.

That’s been mainly due to a knee issue he had around the bye and then came back after it and then landed awkwardly in two games against the Dogs and then later on against Adelaide.

Hey all! I come with peace.

Just curious on a few things. Personally who takes our forwards from your defense?

Wilkie and Gunston?
Howard if he plays on Lewis or is it Wilkie then battle on Gunston?
Webster and Breust?

There’s a few others with Dylan Moore, The resting ruck that goes down whether it’s McEvoy or Reeves.

What about midfield?
Windhager would go to Newcombe I’d think. Mitchell plays too much now as a mid-fwd and his strengths are hard to quell (inside game and his running game).
Then you’ve got others like Nash (tall mid), Jaeger O’Meara, Josh Ward and Dyl Moore who’s played in there.

You’ve got Crouch, Steele, Ross etc.

So like Marshall and Reeves starting rucks, then you’ve got Steele and Mitchell, Moore and Crouch and then Windhager tagging Newcombe.

We may tag Steele but we could also tag Sinclair/Hill with Finn Maginness who’s tagged really well the last 3 weeks with Dawson, Kelly & Simpkin.

With our defense, I have Hardwick and Morris taking Butler & Higgins. Sicily takes Membrey and Blanck takes King. Let me know if there’s any obvious ones I’ve missed.

* that’s horrible luck

Not sure Gresham's knee injury is all just due to horrible luck, I didn't see it happen but you can't help but think that the slippery ground played a part.

If he is out for the rest of the season it makes our task of playing finals even harder, to beat quality teams we need quality players like him in our team.

It looks like Gresham is gone for the year so gives you guys a real chance. Without Jones as well we will look pretty stodgy and one paced.

Your form is much better recently as well. I'm not feeling as confident as I was a few days ago.

Reckon you are pretty close with the match ups.

Sounds like Howard won't play, so Wilkie might end up on Lewis despite the height difference and Battle on Gunston. We don't really have a match up for a resting ruck - Sharman has played back the past 2 weeks but is inexperienced in the role - so that's an area you can exploit us.

Windy did a great job on Kelly but that's the first time we have done a proper midfield tag this season so we might not go with not go with one this week. I'd be surprised if you guys tagged Steele over Hill/Sinclair given how successful other sides have been with stopping our ball movement by stopping one of those two.

Good point. That ground is *ed. Nic Nat would have played way more games had he been at a better ground

Both West Coast and Freo have had bad runs with injuries since they started playing home games at Optus and no doubt the surface there has played a part due to it being too hard when it's dry and too slippery when it's wet. Thankfully we only have to play on it a couple of times a year at the most.

Feel a bit for Campbell because I’m not sure why we even recruited him if we were never going to give him a fair go. But at the same time I feel like Marshall solo rucking is the way the forward for the team.

Owens is the more attractive in to me giving us the extra dimension up forward and another midfielder.
Campbell is there in case Marshall goes down. Marshall can ruck alone (with someone for a brief chop out), so Ryder not being there doesn't open the door for TC. Campbell's only game came when Marshall was out.

Clearly not a popular opinion on here, but I hope Hannebery plays, I hope he dominates, I hope he does it for the next 4 weeks, and I hope he earns himself a new deal. WE saw in 2020 the impact he can have at the pointy end of the year.

Can't do anything about what's happened, but to hold some sort of grudge against him seems strange to me. Would much rather he get fit, sign a cheap deal for another year, and get out on the park for us.

yeah tagging steele doesn't work too well. he's not the type that damages you by foot. Sticking close to him he'll just rack up the tackles.

Tagging Hill is extremely effective and cuts off our run aside from Sincs

Playing to "not win" is why Melbourne was so shit for 10+ years.

Players & teams shouldn't set foot onto the field unless they are playing to win regardless of ladder position or finals prospects. I don't mind the idea of vetting younger players at the end of the season but if you're picked to play you put in a 100% effort & if your worried about injuries...play chess instead.

You’re either taking the pi$$ or you’re Simon Leathlean

😂😂

I remember talking to a West Coast supporting mate of mine before our game against Freo in R23 last year. I said something along the lines of not really giving a shit if we won or not because a loss would give us a pick before them. He did not relate to that kind of thinking at all, said the point is to win every single game you play, that's how you build a winning culture at the club. It's stuck with me since, reckon there might be something to be said about the way members set expectations of success - they've won four flags since 1987 and we've got one since 1897.
