Here we go with the 'Out - Kelly' stuff again.
I'm one of his biggest defenders but I think we've reached the point where we can only play either him or McGrath.

Yep. The contrast was stark. I don't see McGrath the track star at all in his running. Maybe he's following instructions but he should be able to break lines with his run.
He was hardly lightning

Ran a 10.94 from memory, he was a better 400m type from memory

There are guys who are running 10.6 pre AFL and then there speed doesnt even standout that much once in AFL

And then theres the significant size hes added along with not training it as much as a track and field athlete does

Ive no issue with Mcgrath think hes a future AA small defender or atleast in the squad.

jesus we better come out pissing fire for this one.

Everything bar Collingwood is a MUST win.

I'd go Baldwin to replace Ridley, and give Heppell a rest - put Cox back there in his place. It's his natural spot, and potentially gives us a bit of badly needed creativity from half back.

Other end of the ground, yeah Menzie for Stringer. Need the 3 small forwards, and it's clear Stringer isn't right (Interesting contradiction from Scott, saying all year he won't play guys if they're not 100%, yet pretty openly admitting Stringer is carrying something. I guess he balances it out by saying at this time of the year, everyone is carrying something, but whatever it is, it clearly affects Stringer more).

That'll probably do. I'd still like to see Mass in and up the ground/half-forward, but can't see that happening. Wouldn't be upset with either of Tex or ADJ for Snelling, either.

IN: Baldwin, Menzie
OUT: Ridley (inj), Heppell (rest)

The 100m is mostly about top end speed vs acceleration (the 200m is pretty much just top end speed vs how long you can maintain it).

AFL doesn't really allow time to accelerate to top speed, guys like McGrath with a strong 100 / 200 won't show speed from congestion as much as a guy with a top tier 20m sprint.

Problem with McGrath he could not even go with Weightman the length of the ground (behind the goal footage). That is woeful.

The gut running is not AFL standard IMO, and that is across the board.

That is why we can start well then get smashed for 10-15 minute bursts.

Hard to know sometimes whether it's could not or would not, quite a few players are significantly quicker with more endurance running towards goal than they are running towards defence.

Okay, after calming down from Friday Night:

Out: Ridley (inj), Stringer (inj), Heppell, Kelly, Perkins
In: Baldwin, D'Ambrosio, Menzie, Tsatas, Wanganeen

Laverde - Baldwin - Cox
Redman - Zerk-Thatcher - D'Ambrosio
Martin - Caldwell - Durham
Guelfi - Langford - Snelling
Menzie - Wright - Wanganeen
Phillips - Parish - Merrett
Hobbs - McGrath - Tsatas - Bryan

I hate picking and choosing vision tho. Roll the previous 2-3 minutes to see McGrath’s movements before judging. It’s easy to see a snippet and think gut running is not afl standard.

Yeah, I get snippets can be taken out of context but he still should have the capacity to keep up.

Gut running is as much about repeated efforts.

All I’m saying is watch the previous 2-3 minutes beforehand before you judge a snippet. It could be proven right or it could show Mcgrath covered a heap of ground and put it multiple contest efforts, was gassed and then got exposed on the rebound.

I doubt it happens but I like these changes. Only change I would make is Perkins to sub instead of completely out.

I want him playing VFL midfield to hone the craft.

there was plenty of McGrath just not being with his man, or running to get there.
The snippet is what the media use because it's what they picked. I watched Andy a bit and his running is as off as his kicking at the moment.

Waits a half second too long to run to space
runs into spots where the next disposal isn't evident
telegraphs what he's gonna do as he tries to fake an opponent out which slows our movement as they hem him in
Does not run down opponents with the desire to catch them
Gets sucked to the ball and loses his man....far more than Kelly does.

He needs tweaks to his game/role. As it is he's partial offensive/partial lockdown and not really excelling at either
