Agreed. Watching our goals out of the middle in the last quarter, you can see Daniher running hard into the centre square with Weitering in tow, which left Lewis Young one-on-one with McStay at FF.

Excellent observation.

It's laughable how some couch potato experts can only view the worth of a players contribution through the prism of goals, kicks, tackles etc.

Most games you are in possession or control of the ball for well under 50% of game time. What you do for the rest of the time is just as important, if not more so.

Did Weitering keep Joe quiet or did Joe keep him occupied for the greater good?

A very good post. If we are happy to just make up the numbers in September and congratulate ourselves on being ‘relevant’ again, we are missing the point. Success is all about winning Premierships when you are in a position to do so and with our list, we should be disappointed if we don’t win the flag this year. Most pundits had us making the Grand Final this year and if we don’t, then we can chalk up 2022 as another missed opportunity, along with 2019, 2020 and 2021. Nothing controversial about that.

Very poor post, what team that ever existed was just happy to 'make up the numbers' as you say. Success is all about winning? DERR. We should be disappointed if we don't win the flag this year? EVERY club feels that way. 'Most pundits"? Spare me.

Take away an elite defender and the oppo run riot.
Yeah nah. We were getting killed out of the middle, there was a lack of defensive run in our forward half and we turned the ball over. Adams was our lowest ranked player for the game and while he was spoiling to great effect, Carlton would have still kicked plenty of goals because the problems were upfield.

Read the threads closely over the last month or so and there were plenty of posters conceding 2022 and suggesting that at least we were relevant etc etc etc, particularly when talk turned to whether or not Fagan had taken us as far as he could.

You might like to have a glance through this. It doesn’t include additional radio and TV commentators.

I'm reading your vitriol, own it at least.

I agree with them. I think the whole happy to make up the numbers was about our previous seasons.
Obviously going from 17th or so to top 4 we would be happy to make up the numbers in finals even if we don't do well in finals. Because it's not expected.
But now that we have proven to be a legitimate contender the last 3 or so seasons, we shouldn't be happy with anything other than a premiership.
We may have a long and promising future but we should be aiming higher than just making finals. I think we have the potential to be a dynasty like we were in the early 2000's. Maybe even better.
And that means starting to taste success now.
As I mentioned in my last post, the boys have fought so hard since 2019. I want to see them rewarded and I'm sure they feel the same. They would feel anything other than a premiership this season is a failure.
We have it in us. And that is why performances like today and the whole year is so frustrating. Because we know how good we can be. We just haven't seen the full potential yet this season in my opinion

Has the club ever said anything different?

It is sad that not all supporters can enjoy a very important win in the context of this season.

It's sad that some supporters feel they have the god given right to tell other supporters how THEY should feel about the club they love, pay memberships to and follow to the end. It's ok to voice your OWN opinion but to claim it's gospel is tin eared.

At 3q time, we were a percent off 4th and two percent off 3rd and we produce what we did in the last. Finishing as high as possible is imperative, so how do you enjoy that particularly after blowing last week, not to mention throwing the Essendon game due to some questionable selections and then conceding 3 gaols to GWS and 2 to Dogs in the last 2 -3 minutes.

How is the club so clueless of the implications of these lapses. I dare say the players dont particularly care and Fagan and his cronnies in the box just cant get thru to the players bc if they did, crap like this doesn't happen as regularly as it does.

I did enjoy the first 3 quarters, just as I did the first half, but the win was so soured by the last and no doubt the club will tell us how good the Blues are, we had injuries, a mulligan and every other excuse its so customary to trot out.

Conversely you and Jeremiah are doing the same thing tho - so what s your point?

Also..... what a bunch of self entitled supporters.

We kicked ass tonight with our best footy to date. We are playing real competition you crazy idiots.

Carlton were fighting for their season.... with some genuine stars in their team...... what did you expect... no competition???

They came at us hard... and we fought them off to win comfortably.

Loved the game. I think we're building nicely.

This talk of not being able to enjoy the win sounds a lot like Richmond supporters during their premiership run. Unbearable. Spoilt.

I'm a little sick of hearing Matho is a heart and soul player only.

He is more than that. He has exceptional hand skills in tight, has a big body and uses it around clearances.... is now getting himself in scoring positions regularly and setting up goals for team mates plus being one of our best tacklers.
When we needed someone to step up Matho won a contested ball in the goal square. A minute later he kicked another goal. Aker or Vossie used to do these sorts of things. Matho looks a real find for the midfield

I'm sorry but an 8 goal run on, after last week, allows for frustrations to spill out. Especially during the heat of the moment.

Comments that are posted in a live thread don't need retrospective picking apart, with the aid of hindsight to benefit remarks. Comments in the review thread that question that final quarter are also warranted.

We were bloody amazing in the first 3 quarters and downright awful in the 4th, both instances are acceptable to be praised/critiqued/analysed IMO.

But not to enjoy the win??
Carlton are the real deal now.

We beat them. Our first three quarters were too good.

Heart was in the mouth a bit in the 4th... but then we iced them... unlike last week

This "we shouldn't let our competition (who are a good team now) try and come back" is silly. The score I think reflects where both clubs are at overall.

Our best can decimate which we've seen two weeks in a row. One week we couldn't stop the come back. This week we did.

It depends on your marker as to how you will respond to that game.

I posted positively about the game, I think it was an overall good performance. I am content, however I have given up on our flag credentials about 2 weeks ago, winning a final is my marker which im nervous about. I think getting a finals win under our belt and looking to next year is where we are at.

Interms of looking for better form, being competitive, playing well, hopefully winning a final.. ticks all the boxes, great footy/good team - if that’s your marker, 9/10.

Interms of ‘winning a flag’ and having a ‘premiership profile’ - giving up 39 points in the last quarter in 15 minutes after the Richmond game, is a massive concern. We can’t have teams being able to do that to us when the heat is on, coming into finals. So interms of a premiership markers, 5/10.

Good footy, good team, who will make finals. However, have issues that we have left too long to overcome,

Was at the game and it was evident that when he decides to go the ball he’s all in. Two goals came from that endeavour alone. Not including his almost brain fade goal. Plus his tackling is an added bonus. Spare me the stats but it’s his type of tackling. When he sticks them you know it.
