Review Round 21, 2024: Box Hill Hawks v Werribee Tigers, 18 August 2024, 2.05pm @ Box Hill City Oval

The Hawks enter the final round of the home and away season clinging on to fourth spot by a half game ahead of Geelong (in fifth) and host the top of the table Werribee Tigers. The Hawks cannot go past the Tigers even with a win, but Box Hill would clearly cement a top four finish if they were to knock over Werribee on Sunday afternoon. For their part, the Tigers have one hand on the minor premiership, but need to beat Box Hill to ensure they finish top, with Footscray a half-game behind the Tigers. Although the Brisbane Lions are four points behind Werribee, they also trail Werribee by 21%, so it would take a catastrophic loss by Werribee to Box Hill and a big win by Brisbane (as well as a Footscray loss) for Brisbane to top the ladder.

Box Hill are locked into the top six even if they lose to Werribee, but they would prefer to remain in the top four if they can help it, although there is a possibility that beating Werribee on Sunday would grant the Tigers a rematch in the qualifying final. The advantage Box Hill has is that they would know what they need to do in order to finish in the top four, given that both Brisbane and Southport play on Saturday and the Geelong game would be over by half-time of the Box Hill-Werribee game.

Unfortunately, Box Hill will be without Tyler Brown and Ben Cavarra for the game, and probably for the season. Brown suffered an achilles injury in the game against the Giants, while Cavarra hurt his hamstring and is set for an extended sting on the sidelines, meaning that he won't be available until the preliminary final (should Box Hill advance that far) at the earliest. Box Hill also will not have Cam Mackenzie, Bailey Macdonald and Chad Wingard available for the game.

Anybody know when Callum Brown and Ed Phillips are due to return from injury?
With Tyler Brown and Cavarra now out for the year, need some VFL experience to step up if we are going to go anywhere in the finals.

Weird seeing this line-up.

I assumed we'd have another bye this week.

Looking forward to watching Moraes in the brown and gold. It's a shame we don't have first dibs on him in the draft

Somehow Hawthorn is always getting shafted while other clubs always get advantages. The kid is an elite user of the ball and would've been a welcome addition.

Cal is out for the season. Ed is another week away

Jake Arundell has been huge since returning from Sth Adelaide. Do we know why he left them mid-season?
I was told it was a family illness that brought him back.

Hopefully he is still available at our pick if his best available at that pick.

Q1 and we're down by 13. We had a horrible 15 minutes where we couldn’t touch the ball. Equalised as the quarter went on but couldn’t translate it to scoreboard pressure. Really missing Serong down back as he’s a key playmaker.

Shammy winning plenty of the ball but inconsistent with ball usage.

Ramsden has been great, super mobile and linking up.

Bodie Ryan composed in defence.

Hustwaite’s physicality in close has stood out.

Ward winning a decent amount but not really damaging.

Ramma has been very lively around the ground. Not monstered by Conway either who has been a 30 hit out a game player this season. Hope he smashes the weights in the office season getting up to AFL ruck strength.

Bodie Ryan turns it over two plays in a row and Werribee kicks 1.1.

We've been very bad this quarter, starting from the midfield. Only highlight a good Arundel goal.

Turning it off now for the senior clash. I hope we improve our effort and intensity.
