Autopsy Round 4, 2023: Hawks go home at half time v Cats

Haven’t read the thread but I’m curious to know if I’m the only one that came away from that game feeling positive.

Im choosing not to dwell on that third term. Loss of focus happens. Especially to young teams. Im much more interested in how we managed to control the game for the first half. Learning to control momentum shifts can come later but the most important thing is to make sure we have the talent on the list and we can execute a dangerous game plan. I saw that in spades in the first half and against NM last week. All huge positives. We will continue to lapse and cop some thrashings but so long as the development is happening in tandem it’s all good as far as I’m concerned. I really feel surprisingly positive given the result. 2023 is going to be a very interesting season for hawthorn supporters. But from where I’m sitting it’s very exciting.

you'd drop him?

I'd play him. Full games.

5 disposals. 2 inside 50s. In a half. Second half, who knows? Chad didn't do much and ain't the future.

I'd back Brockman home. Coaching error imo. Selection error with Chad as sub, too. Either out or in for The Chad

Having a high priced recruit sitting on the pine as a sub is a big error and far too tempting for the coach to “sub him in”

If he is available then start him. If his efforts are below par or he starts limping around or sooking sub him out.

This will be his final season at the club unless he is willing to play for about 300k from here on.

Long was ok

stephens had 16 possies in a 10 goal win and did not merit a promotion
Wasn’t a game where we had many high possessions winners, but I was at game and blind Freddy could see from watching that, that Long and Stephens would be a massive upgrade on maginness/Nash/Worpel. I’m just done with, and I think Sam is too, blokes who can’t kick or make good decisions. Long and Stephens are footballers. The others aren’t, they are either bull at a gate get it forward types or athletes with no game nous. Keep phasing out blokes like this, Impey and Frost are next in line to these three to go.

The kid is really talented, and could be just like Rozee, but needs to go when his turn, and too often at the moment he shirks it.
He needs to understand that no matter how much talent you have you wont make a career in the AFL if you dont go hard when its required.

In fact you have a better prospect to make it if you are only moderately talented but crack in hard every game.

did’nt seethe game. Preoccupation before and after the game about rucks.
the coach has got to take a rap over this as these performances are unacceptable.
need a forward.

He craps his pants. Constantly sticks a hand out instead of putting his body on the line.
We need hardness. Not this sort of shit. He had many, many mates but please you cannot completely put this crap down to youth and inexperience. We literally stopped. I stress you cannot put this down to inexperience. This is fundamental. We played Geelong into form.

Moron Chris Scott already wingeing about some ruck contact as though it was deliberate. He is a wingeing already, given voice by his mates in the media. Chris Scott…..get ****ed.

I was there. I could just feel it at halftime that Geelong would come out and annihilate us, and that's exactly what they did. However, this was the Hiroshima and Nagasaki of football quarters. Geelong's experienced bodies just dismissed our youthful midfield like we were 4-year-olds jumping on their backs. And that suffocating pressure that Geelong exemplified against Sydney in the Grand Final came with their switch in intent. Overall, I would much rather get run over by the best team in Geelong than get annihilated by St Kilda again, as it shows our boys what they need to do to become premiers in the future. Will Day was BOG again. I also saw the last 3 quarters of the Box Hill game. We need to get DGB and Butler in the side this week. They were tremendous. Ramsden is also showing great potential.

But who are our leaders, who is showing the grunt of a leader. In the third qtr we just did not touch the ball. Hardly did not touch it. We were very, very disappointing and that is all about want and desire. Sorry, but it is the truth.
It's not as simple as want and desire.

That's incredibly naive.

What? How is he doing enough? Seriously everyone is acting like he is Paul Salmon.

He has taken 3 marks for the year, kicked 0 goals, averaging 5 touches a game, his hitout to advantage is below adverage. Today he had 3 touches, 2 of them turnovers and he just beat Stanley for hitouts by 5, a player everyone said he would dominate.

Ok awesome, he wins the ruck duals. But does that make him better than Grundy? Ruckman need to be doing more than just a few good taps.
Basic logic tells me that if he wasn’t doing enough, he wouldn’t be our number one ruckman.

We don't have Grundy waiting in the wings, we have Lynch. Whilst Lynch is better around the ground, he's significantly inferior in the ruck. The exact position you want him to replace Reeves in. How exactly are you seeing this work out for us? Either short term or long term?
We could play Lynch in the David Hale role and keep either Reeves or Meek as primary ruck. This is not an outrageous strategy if we want to try it, especially considering Lewis is out and Kosi horribly out of form.

We need hardness. Not this sort of s**t. He had many, many mates but please you cannot completely put this crap down to youth and inexperience. We literally stopped. I stress you cannot put this down to inexperience. This is fundamental. We played Geelong into form.

We definitely need more hardness in the team. That’s why I am bringing in DGB, Long, Butler and Seamus Mitchell in, all are hard at it. The hit Mitchell put on Clarke in the VFL game today was exactly what we need.
