Autopsy Round 5, 2022: Hawks skin the Cats

The 2nd
And.. according to the AFL website we had 17 more contested possessions in that last quarter...

If ever they had proof their grandpa plan would fail, today is it.
I cannot rate the Cats, this is 2022 and having more than half your side in their 30’s isn’t going to cut it. They’ll leverage a few wins from their home ground and another few from Richard kissing but other coaches will be watching todays replay more than I will and learning heaps.

What a win, the midfield was very good, Ward had so much class, Worpel gave a damn this week, Mitchell was just genuine superstar level and Jaeger did an unselfish role as a half forward while Duke was unreal.

No Reeves so getting a ruck for 4 quarters will only help, more class back with Day, Wingard, Bramble and damn.

Forwardline was very good, backline held up all game and were unreal.

WHAT. A. WIN.

Great to see Newcombe playing just like he was doing for Box Hill at the start of last year, that's the sort of play that got Sam's attention.
Reeves was a big loss, his first quarter gave an indication of how important he can become for us in the future. Well done to Nash and Kosi who covered very well for him.
Worpel showed plenty of endeavour, but his disposal was terrible and the coaches need to work on his disposal skills for him to continue to hold his place.
One thing I noticed was how inconsistent the umpires were with their arms out decisions.
The other aspect of the arms out decision I noticed was if the umpire made a decision and a player put their arms out a 50m penalty could be applied, but if the umpire didn't make a decision and players put their arms out nothing happened.

Selwood is absolutely fuming in the post-match interview with K Rock.

Maximum schadenfreude at the moment.
There's a lot of things about Selwood to dislike, but I've hated him the most ever since he did what no other player does and commented on Sicily when he was in front of the tribunal for dropping his knee into him. There's normally an unspoken agreement that players don't talk about or throw others under the bus even when they're involved, and old Sookwood couldn't help himself.

Disagree they outplayed us for much of the game. We Cleary outplayed them the first quarter and half and the whole last. They had the 3rd and half the 2nd.
They outplayed us in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs and it was only due to us losing Reeves. Once the team adjusted to the situation we backed our runners to finish off strong and that's what happened. Stewart was the only reason the wall didn't break completely. The guy is an immense player.
I thought once they settled halfway in the first quarter to the start of the last they were playing better than us.

They smashed us with inside 50’s and marks inside 50. We were pretty lucky they were sloppy going inside 50 and missed some very gettable shots.

Full credit to our guys for never giving in and running over the top of them. But the cats should really have put us away by 3 quarter time.

I'm going to put last week's performance down to the boys looking ahead to this week.

Two sliding doors moments for me. The first when Reeves went off which turned the tide against us and took the boys time to regroup. The second was when Henry went off and the Cats defenders (aside Stewart) started to panic when the ball can in.

Praying for a similar performance against he $tains next Monday.

Nah. We were the better side for 65% of the game. Take out Stewart and we win by 6+ goals

Felt like Ward had a really solid game for us. Has looked shaky at times and looked shaky at times today, but he's looking more solid more consistently.
I can see him being a massive improver as the season goes on and looking into 2023

Foot skills looked a bit shabby at times hopefully more he plays the better they get.

To come back after dropping that mark late in the game to impose himself on the next couple of contests he was involved in had me excited. Shows real leadership at his age to not let the disappointment get to him and just move on to the next contest.
Not saying anything anyone doesnt know , their old blokes and their are a lot cant keep the intensity and workrate up like they could.

Would drop way back if either Hawkins or Cameron goes down. Shot in 12-18 months

We looked like were gliding past them in the last 20 minutes and I thought we were gassed at 3/4 time .

Still on a high after that effort by the boys. In other news, AFL article: Scott 'revealed' that Dangerfield is carrying niggles throughout the first part of the season.

OFC, that must be the reason for all this.

Mission Accomplished.

**** yeah.

I need to annoy my cats supporting ‘friend’. Can someone please post the experience (age and games and numbers of players in each experience bracket?) between the two teams?
