I feel this isn’t the game to be trying anything. Play like we did in rounds 1-4 we win comfortably. Play like we did against the suns and it will be close.

Lose this and that’s when the changes need to be made.

Yes, was contemplating this simillarly.

Nash and Newc had a better game against the Pies after startting the season pretty poorly. Have we seen enough to give one of them a tap on the shoulder, or do we back them in to find something this week.

Fact is, if we're dropping players based on Saturday night, we're going to need a lot of players to bring in, and Box Hill were substandard too.

Am assuming none of Lewis, Jiath, Day, Wingard, Breust or Watson are available this week - would be pleasantly surprised if they were.

I really want to see Sicily freed up to play in the role he has historically dominated and enable him to 'lead' and direct.

Would like;
  • Hardwick to start down back.
  • Moore and Amon to start as midfielders.
  • Weddle to start as our third tall up forward. North have no one down back that could possibly go with him.

Mackenzie + Butler > Serong + Morrison

Hustwaite to come into the 22, and i don't give a * which one of Ward, MacDonald or Nash are sub.
CJ is available.

Damien Barrett will come up with something like this for Hawthorn

IF: Sam Mitchell and Hawthorn think the heat is turning up...

THEN: Lose to the norf and the blow torch will be on.

and a powder puff one for norf.

Must win game for the Hawks.

I think we need to accept the fact we have gone backwards this year. We have reasons for this but this is the reality. I find in the team selection 4 or 5 blokes are not playing In their natural positions. This game is a toss off the coin let's be honest our best half dozen are down on form! Win the tackle count and we will go a long way to winning the game.

First problems to address

  • The midfield has been diabolical.
  • Poor effort smashed in the tackle count every week.
  • The spine is poor (Sicily,Lewis) obviously Lewis is injured but our two best KPP players have been poor. Frost has been our best performed tall, imagine saying that preseason.

Nash and Newc both look a bit short of a full gallop for mine. If either isn’t quite feeling 100%, it might be worth making one of them the sub?

Gives them a lighter game to freshen up a bit while still giving them the chance to find some form.

Hustwaite was moving a lot better than our other mids this week which makes me think fatigue was at least a small factor for last night’s performance.

Would still like to see them backed in though. Mitchell should be really revving the boys up for this one.

Our scoring this year has been a challenge

Ess 11 - 17 - 83
Melb 5 - 8 - 38
Gee 10 - 10 - 70
Coll 11 - 6 - 72
GCS 8 - 8 - 56

Kangaroos have conceded 100+ points in every game thus far. We need to kick close to 100 points to win this as the Roos have hit the scoreboard on a par with us this season

GWS 13 - 4 - 82
Freo 11 - 10 - 76
Carl 12 - 9 - 81
Bris 6 - 6 - 42
Gee 10 - 4 - 64

Big difference in scoring shots.

They've been accurate. We haven't.

Need to kick straight next week and not let them have a sniff.

Unless he's injured Newk stays. Nash on shaky ground but who replaces him? McKenzie, Ward and MacDonald to stay but need the acid put on them as they're just not putting in the required effort and grunt. It's a brutal game and they were taught a lesson by the Suns midfield about the intensity and aggression that's required to succeed at the highest level. Same goes for Ramsden. Looked a bit timid and needs to attack the contest harder.

Morrison to come in for Butler the only change. Serong deserves a game but not really a spot for him in the backline at this stage unless they throw him forward.

Reluctant to play CJ as he hasn't played a game for so long. The other senior players unlikely to be available.

Expecting our younger mids to compete with suns midfield was always a forlorn hope but the more experienced ones couldn’t either. That midfield performance was as bad as I can recall there have to be consequences or what message does that send? At a minimum hustwaite must play full games somewhere. HH for Nash Morrison for butler. Let the young guys have a go against north rotating through the third spot supported by Worpel and Newk. Last chance for Ward he’s been pretty ordinary all year. Mackenzie has been quite good until last night so he stays for the foreseeable future

In - Serong
Out - Hustwaite

Serong in to release Weddle up the ground. Josh is being wasted playing on the last line of defence.
He would be the perfect wing. Push back to help the defence. Then create havoc in offense.

HH needs game time after being the sub twice.

I think we have found a role for Finn. Turn him into a pressure forward like Powel-Pepper. Along with Butler needs to keep the ball in our front half with tackle pressure.

Moore into the middle. Provides something different with his elite running and courage.

No point playing Hardwick as a permanent forward when we don’t win enough field position. Ok to be a swing man if we are behind in the second half.

Amon in the backline has not worked.

Sub - Ward

B - Hardwick Frost Scrimshaw
HB - Impey Sicily S.Mitchell
C - Weddle Worpel Amon
HF - C Mac Ramsden Ginnivan
F - Butler Chol Maginness
R - Meek Newcombe Moore
Inter - Nash, MacKenzie, Serong, Mass

Tag Sheezal . If he wants 30 plus in our 50 , thats a win for us . Rather that than 20 in the front half .

Be disciplined against their young mids .
We worry about ours at stoppage defensively , they are way worse ....ball hunt and dont defend ( they will be good though ) but we can and should exploit them there.

Im making minimal change . If any of the more senior guys are right , I'm bringing 2 max in change wise for leadership .

If we buy into the poor form , pressure narrative its game on .
If we focus on our decent passages of play in most our games we win nicely despite not geing at full strength.

They have been saved from 2 x 100 pt thumpings by accurate kicking . We should win as ling as we dont panic and overcomplicant it

IN: Lewis, Serong, Morrison

B: Hardwick, Frost, Impey

C: Weddle, Worpel, Amon

HF: Butler, Chol, MacDonald

F: Ginnivan, Lewis, Moore

R: Meek, Newcombe, Nash

INT: D’Ambrosio, Ramsden, Maginness, Morrison, MacKenzie (Sub)

I think we have no choice but to drop Nash and it's not just based on Saturday night. He's all heart, but he's a liability with ball in hand and shouldn't be allowed to take the kick inside F50. Huss to play a full game in the guts.

Ward is the other. Would it be better for him to find form in the two's and make way for Harry? I'm not sure on this one.

Butts has to be given a block of games. I reckon he'll be more suited to the game against Norf.

Lewis is out of form and I'd be reluctant to rush him back. I'd give Ramma another week.

There are very few games that look winnable for us at this stage based on our 2024 body of work to date, and a win would be a much needed shot in the arm for players, coaches and fans alike.

As such, I don’t think this is the week to be making wholesale changes, even if there are a few players who probably deserve to be dropped/could do with a spell in the twos.

Butler has been nowhere near it for his two games, would be surprised if he survives the chop. Any further changes should be based on which (if any) of our injured best 22 players are absolutely ready.

Hustwaite has to start.
