ST KILDA’S Jack Steven has channelled his inner Sam Mitchell with an off-the-ball knee incident involving returning Giant Stephen Coniglio.
After a few minutes of play between the Saints and Giants at Etihad Stadium on Friday night, cameras captured Steven raising his knee into the leg of Coniglio.

Coniglio, who was playing his first game of the season after missing six weeks with an ankle injury, was tagging the star Saints ball magnet at the start of the game — and, obviously, got under his skin.

“Jack Steven’s got to believe that Coniglio won’t be match fit,” Channel 7 commentator Brian Taylor said.

Good:
- Coniglio's return
- Patton's goal kicking
- Saints played great, their pressure was too much
- Another tough game, in which we stayed competitive, will help us build through the year (better than a bunch of easy wins), assuming we pick up enough wins overall which is still on track at 5-2

Bad
- Stevie J is cooked
- Saints exploited our top heavy defence by kicking to packs and forcing ground contests
- Saints exploited our slow forward line on the quick Docklands deck with their rebound
- Injuries

Ugly
- Umpires, although I don't think it impacted the result

I dont think its panic stations just yet, our top tier mids all had plenty of it but the strength of last year was the depth through there which probably also helped out the defenders. Currently our second tier midfield is made up of 1st and 2nd year players, considering this we have been pretty lucky to be near the pointy end of the ladder.

I hope you don't mind me popping in.

Don't panic about injuries yet. You have few to come back and it's amazing how teams cruelled by injuries adapt and get stronger. Think Hawks of 2015 and Bulldogs of 2016. Sometimes injuries gel the team more as everyone works harder and supports each other.

I think our win was against the tide. GWS lead most of the night and their movement of the ball was generally cleaner and crisper. We hung in there, dug deep and found a way. We also got the rub of the green with the umpiring, which has not been something we have enjoyed much in recent times. The umpires can influence tight games.

This was a big win for our club because this is affirmation that we are coming and the years of struggle have been worth it. You could see what it meant to our supporters. For a home and away game it was surprisingly emotional. I certainly felt it at the game and was surprised by it.

But your club is still clearly the best team. This year is even and unpredictable. Look at what happened to Adelaide and Geelong today. Anybody on any given day can score a win. It's not what happens now that's important but what happens in September when the whips are cracking.

Not many teams will beat you. You'll finish top 4, likely top 2. Then re-set and learn from the experiences of last year and from matches like Friday night. It will take a very good team to knock you off. Or a very lucky one.

People talk about what is a "bad look" for footy.

Kneeing a bloke like that blatantly is a pretty horrendous look for the game. But watch is get swept under the carpet.

But if Toby did it??

If Toby did it they'd be baying for blood. This will get nothing. The MRP and the tribunal have a history of letting guys take Cogs out and being let off.

McVeigh got nothing - not even a fine - for punching him in the first game back in 2012.
Cooney got a slap on the wrist for his dog act in the Essendon game that put Cogs out longer injured/concussed
Jack Stevens kneeing him?

Nothing to see here, move along please the "victim" is only Cogs - do what you like.

The Cooney incident I recall. One the few times I've seen Leon indicate publicly he's pissed with powers that be.
Seems to be more he was a Browlow medallist with a clean record and everyone thought he was too good a bloke to have meant it.
Just like people used to think the local priest was above any sort of bad behaviour.

Well done to the Saints, I think they are building really nicely. I sat on the wing amongst the Saints fans for the last quarter, yeah it was extremely passionate, it was great to see except for the actual result! Loved the comments from the crowd to Heath Shaw and Nick Maxwell. I think our form has been very patchy. Yes definitely hit by injuries but we also don't have nearly as much depth as the past. I do agree with Tim Watson just now on SEN that the team isn't gelling 100% and probably the biggest culprit is Stevie J. Great teams play as a team and I don't think we are there yet.

I don't get the defence of Stevens (I just thought it was Big Footy nongs, but bloody Alan Richardson just regurgitated it on AFL360) that it was somehow Wilson's fault for not letting go of the ball and bracing himself.

Effing Joke!

Agreed on that portion of the discussion, but same show and the discussion around the giants, I am 100% onboard with us "playing like millionaires" and getting beaten as a result.

Would also love a club statement on Davis vs Lobb

So would I, but that is inner sanctum stuff.
