It was a bit more then that.

In hindsight I wish we grabbed him. But it was a bit more then getting a root.

It wasn't really, the second incident where he got punched was a totally random event where he didn't even know the guy. So it was getting a root and being thrown out of a pub one time. Basically the same as every other 18 year old male in Australian history.

Watching him in preseason. He like Dixon and Carter came back in not good shape.
Maybe they all are needed to work harder on their fitness.
Maybe a lack of want from the three.Haven't heard Dixon or Carters name mentioned at all so far.
If ever they were going to make it, from here in is the time to show something.Show some discipline maybe.

I hear a lot of maybe and nothing much else.

Exactly

Still reckon Pitt would have been a really good player. I watched some of a game he was in the other night and he was so clean and classy and I've never seen anyone kick the ball as well off 1 step on either leg when I watched him closely during a scratch match. Freakish.
I always said he would end up a Mackie type once he put on a bit of muscle and got game hardened. One of those back flanker/wing you set your watch by to always do the right thing and setup play with his elite leg(s).
I always thought that Apeness would have been a decent player if it wasn't for injury, tough in a contest too.

Son of a former player shouldn’t have anything to do with it. Although looks like we might have tried that path with Dylan.
Yes, being the son of a former player doesn't mean a walk-up start. But you think it would meant we were more aware of him that otherwise. We could find Matt Taberner in up-country Victoria. But we couldn't find McGovern in Albany.

I'm livid we passed on McGovern a Freo supporter too.

Darling Gov Kelly all in front of us and Lloyd chose some other guy

You could Kick every kick more than 40m to contest and never hit a target and your efficiency rate could be 100%.

As I understand it, if your kick ends up with the opposition then it is not an effective disposal. So 10 kicks to a contest that all go off hands and roved by an opposition player would result in a disposal efficiency of 0%.

His stoppage work was obviously high when he was playing on the ball but obviously the last few years at hb, not so much. So if you compare his midfield years he was winning more clearances than all of those you've named and Brayshaw even if you use his career stats!

So he wins more ball, more hard ball, more clearances and has a better DE.

The turnover stats are very marginal between the lot of them with Conca leading the way in Clangers.

So he's nowhere near as bad as you and others try to make out.
You make a compelling argument, so what do you attribute his non-selection to? I'm sure the match committee sit down with the aim to select the best team they can with the available talent. Do you think it's team balance, or something more sinister?

I couldn't agree more with this - his heart condition is not something that could have been foreseen, and had it not been for that he may have been that freakishly talented goal kicking midfielder we have been sadly missing. Dare I say it, a bit like Jaidyn Stephenson - who coincidentally had a know heart defect before his draft and therefore slipped down the order.

All clubs passed on Nat Fyfe before we picked him up - sometimes you are the windshield, sometimes you're the bug.

Remember it took 3 years before McGovern actually did anything meaningful as an AFL player. By all accounts he was nowhere near it in 2010 when originally rookied by WC.
I do think we need to look closer to home in this draft. If all our elite talent is interstate its going to be harder to keep them all here in a few years time.

It's as if players not in Melbourne have a tendency to get overlooked a lot more than players based in a city crawling with scouts, footy journos and the national talent identification manager.

I do remember this and some players take time. But a free hit for McGovern and Kelly...

I watched them preseason. No maybe. They , the three mentioned were slack before and after Christmas.
Dixon is further off than Blakely and Carter is further back still.

I trust your judgement re preseason. I was there, and Dixon was far from fit. A lot has happened since then, and Connor may have increased his fitness substantially.

Who really knows except the coaches.

On a side note, some of the forest players during pre-season are some of IMO the weaker players in Freo's best 22.

There is cramming of games coming up and both he and a few other players may get a game due to some needing a rest.

Lloyd had already been earmarked to take over Phil Smart during the 2009 season. Phil Smart and Lloyd both worked on the 2009 draft and he was very keen on Fyfe. Thanks Phil, great departing present.

I kind of wish we held onto Phil a bit longer. He was an advocate of WA players and he never really got a proper opportunity. We were f*&ked over with picks in 95 and 96. He nailed the 1999 draft when we had 3 early ones. We continuously traded draft picks during the 2000s and when we kept them (2003) - it was an atrocious draft (although he got Mundy at 19). Phil nailed 2008 and nearly 2009 if Morabito stayed fit.

No matter how good Pitt 'could have been' - passing on Darling was a massive oversight. He was supposed to be a top 5 pick and we were already looking at forward replacements post Pav. Yes, he's not tall enough as a key position player but he would have been a steal at pick 20. There are rumours that Ross overruled Lloyd by picking Simpson over Grundy but not sure if that's just BS.

It's not all about who you pick though. It's about development and opportunity (look at Gold Coast). We were #blessed to have Mark Harvey as coach before Ross. He gave the young players freedom to play and develop. As much as I loved Ross, he had his favourites and some players didn't develop or get the opportunity they should have. Don't forget we had Menengola and Collins on our list who would be handy now. I'm enjoying what I'm seeing with Jlo and hope he can continue to back in the young boys. Missing Fyfe may almost be a blessing for Brayshaw and Cerra. And I can't bloody wait to see Sturt, Henry and Fredrick in the same forward line soon.

Menegola proves this to be false.
Yes that is true. Menegola would have walked into our team over the last few years (well, until he got injured of course!)

But I would have "sacrifice" Menegola for the general policy of not keeping several guys on the rookie list for multiple years so as to have room for more project players to cycle through.

I kind of wish we held onto Phil a bit longer.
Longer than the fourteen years he was recruiting manager? What is it with the Smart revisionism that is popular on this board now? Just because he wanted Fyfe over Bastinac? He also picked Brown at 4 and rated Polak above Hodge and Judd! Even without cherry picking picks, the proof of the pudding is in the eating: at what point in his tenure did we have a good list? He was a shit list manager.

We don't know that he rated Polak above Hodge and Judd. As a list manager, I'm sure he wasn't the one telling them to trade pick 1 (that was Schwabby). Also Brown was a pretty good pick at number 5 (250 games and a premiership player).

Smart wasn't overly experienced when he came in, and just when he hit a purple patch, we got rid of him. I'm not saying bring him back, it just would have been nice if he stayed a bit longer. It doesn't matter though - it's all ancient history. Hopefully we're on the right track.
