Ruck : Draper, Flip
Forward Weid, Langford, Perkins, AMT, Snelling
Wings: Martin, sheil, Hobbs
Mids: Merrett, Parish, setterfield, Stringer, Caldwell
Def: Zerk, Baldwin, Kelly, Redman, McGrath, Durham, TBD D7

Sub: Heppell

Has bryan ever played defence? Could be his shot if the body is ready for afl.

Keep weid fwd with langford.
Baldwin sub in event that fails.
He did in a few of the Covid scratch matches in 2020 when we where in the bubble and had mixed 15 on 15 sides. From all reports he did okay but has not been seen there since. Not something I would be looking at as those games where very mickey mouse. Would rather play Baldwin or even Hayes who is not ready but at least he has been playing defense.

From the VFL

Baldwin played well enough to be considered.

Bryan has put together 3 solid games now. Do not think he is ready to take a full time role but he could give Flipper a spell for a couple of weeks.

Wanganeen is starting to find some form after a slow start. Could be a left field option.

Snelling did not shoot the lights out.

Montgomery put in another solid game.

Voss very quiet.

Hayes debut?
Would be very left field but his form has been decent. He has not been totally out of it. Has shown some good signs.
Doubt he is ready . Would probably go Baldwin first but if could be good for the young bloke to get a look after 5 reasonable games in the VFL.

Baldwin is only 193cm and Montgomerie 190! Yikes in deep poopoo.

You don't really beat Daniher in the air anyway. Daniher's height, reach and leap mean there's pretty much no defender in the AFL (even Darcy Moore) who can defend him if he gets to run and jump at the ball, so you defend him by simply not letting him do that. So someone like Baldwin might actually do OK on him if he's smart about it and tries to force him to compete body-on-body, and let Montgorie play his best role as the third tall who can intercept mark or support in the air.

If we have pressure on the ball carrier and don't let Daniher have a clear leading lane or jump at the ball then you can limit his impact inside 50. You'll never completely negate his ability to score a goal given he's 200cm with a strong aerial game, can kick them off the deck or on a run from 70m, you just have to limit the quality and quantity of service he gets and try to force him to stand and wrestle under a high ball if it comes in. Once he's on the move you've already lost.

He could also simply have a day when he can't be bothered and will kick 1.5 and 3 OOF.

Yeah good points get that...but there are contests where a taller close to 200cm defender would make all the difference ...hopefully those contests are minimal

It's pretty simple with Joey. Don't let him mark close to 50M line where he has to kick through the ball properly. More likely to be accurate. Let him mark 30M out on a slight angle and high chance of a point or OOF.

Certainly it would be nice to have a taller defender available, makes it harder for Daniher if he hasn't got a clear run and jump. But mostly it's pressure through the middle that makes or breaks defenders jobs anyway.

Id like to see Baldwin drive Daniher into the turf at every opportunity. He's a soft prick

I’d love to see Baldwin on Daniher and get physical with him. If it gets too hard Joe will pack up and go home.
I’d also like to see Montgomery come in and play third man up. The experience for these two would be priceless and they have been good in the twos. Hayes needs time to get stronger and put on some size. A few games in the second half of the season if he’s still going well.

Bring Jones in* and have him follow Gunston around all day. May not defend him very effectively but Gunston is one of the smartest and most consistent second-third talls in the league over the last 20 years IMO. Educational experience.

* am aware Jones has likely been hidden in a back paddock somewhere with James Stewart.

Jones definitely in the back paddock, has a back injury which Scott confirmed in the presser

Port Adelaide kicked the snot out of Brisbane in round 1 with a defence of Aliir (195cm), Burton (192cm), McKenzie (191cm) and a washed Jonas (188cm).

That isn't all that different in size then say Zerk-Thatcher (195cm), Baldwin (194cm), Montgomery (190cm) and a washed Heppell (189cm).

The key to winning was Port dominated clearances and put ungodly amount of physical pressure on Brisbane so any time they sent it forward it was untidy and allowed Port to peel off and help.

If we don't do the same and allow the Brisbane midfield to do as they please like Carlolton did o Friday, it won't matter how short we are in ndefence.

Dont we have bottom 3 levels of pressure in the afl?
And port are about the best at it?
