Ryan Crowley tests positive to banned substance (Opposition supporters tread carefully)

Agree, most bizarre thread I have seen on the normally quite sensible Freo forum for a while. We have no clue what is wrong but we have gone from drugs to cancer to depression. This off season is going on way too long!
ha ha. Yep. Cricket just isn't quite cutting it.

Crowley has been such a great asset to the club. He's been an integral part of reaching our first grand final, of us being one of the top teams for a few years now. He's going to go down as being the best tagger of his generation, and he'll always be a Doig medalist.
Whatever it is, I just hope he works his issues out & gets through the other side unscathed.

So true. That said, maybe the way in which he flipped his career on its head is the cause of his issues. Did Crowls sell his soul to the devil to become the best tagger in the game? I mean, I feel like an empty husk during the offseason let alone actually being a real, soulless husk. Hope RTB gives it back to the poor guy :(

Sadly he now has both. The depression means he will now be addicted to Lexipro or Pristique. But they should start helping him feel normal. But footy now isn't his main focus. But like Mitch Clark he'll be back. Maybe not playing footy but happy again.

So, so unhelpful. No, depression means that he has a serious mental health condition which can impoverish lives and sadly sometimes lead to death. This is a serious problem which needs compassion and professional help. Medication is a part of that professional help and statements (which are false) that it causes depressed patients to be addicted to antidepressants are dangerous and ill-informed. That's the sort of anti-psychiatry rant you hear coming from Tom Cruise and the rest of his Xenu-hating Scientologists. For your benefit the tradenames of the medications you mentioned are "Lexapro" and "Pristiq".

Thanks for the kind words about Crowley, but, hope you finish 9th as is tradition.

Oh, make sure you guys take it easy on Rance this year as well so he's fresh when he arrives at the Dockers 2016.

Hahaha

For what it's worth - I was on Lexapro for a year and a half after the death of a close friend. Anti depressants aren't addiction forming, nor are they (in a lot of cases) a complete solution to a problem. They are simply a tool to help get through the day to day while you work through your issues - developing better coping mechanisms, opening up and talking about what's going on, and moving on.

I remember a few years ago I was a bit of a grumpy shit around the forums - that was why :)

I'm assuming either of those will have some undesirable side effects, like weight gain, insomnia etc? Shithouse situation for one of my fav freo players ever :(

Assuming he has one of these illnesses (note: So far its been purely speculation and there's a strong chance he doesn't have any of these), but seriously he is blowing this way out of proportion - one of the key benefits to a lot of the long term anti depressants is that the side effects are minimal - excluding the initial 2-4 weeks. I'm on Escitalopram (Lexapro), I've jumped on and off it before and coming off it is rough (insomnia and these weird ass shocks) but there's no 'addiction' in the traditional sense, its just irritating. Besides that though, you barely even notice you're on it besides taking a pill every morning. Its obviously different for everyone, but medication isn't as bad as people like to blow it up to be.

I'm on Zoloft just like half of the population. No addiction and few side effects. Understandably it's not for everyone but it keeps me afloat and makes me a weapon between the sheets

Yes, very possible. Sport drug agencies are insanely inflexible about that sort of thing. There are plenty of over-the-counter medications that could see you banned by ASADA without even considering the kind of prescription drugs that could be prescribed to treat depression.

For example, Salbutamol (the active ingredient in Ventolin Inhalers, used by all Asthmatics) is a proscribed drug under most anti-doping regimes. Your guess is as good as mine where things like Prozac fall.
There is a process for usingmedications that are needed for identified medical conditions. Ventolin is ok if you have notified the appropriate body beforehand. Antidepressants would also not be any problem. There have been TV images of AFL players using asthma puffers.

Have also heard that he's on his last strike for drugs.

Have also heard that Kevin Spacey and Brett Lee are an item. Come at me.
One of these is definitely more believable than the other. Congrats Kev & Brett

One of the worst things you can do if you are depressed is to stop exercising. Doctors will often prescribe exercise to patients suffering depression.
indeed. speaking just from personal experience and mostly for anxiety, meds help, but proper sleep, diet and exercise help the most. sitting out games but continuing to train for fitness ticks all of those boxes for recovery. i don't feel great about speculating on the guy's private life, but that would be my bet.

feels weird that we're all in a way hoping he's 'just' depressed. can imagine most clinically depressed people would rather be happy recreational drug users.

It's only weird because society in general and the AFL in particular are insanely paranoid about recreational drugs. They really aren't that big of a deal. Nobody seems to care when investment bankers or plumbers use drugs recreationally but somehow it's the end of the world if football players do.

Ben Cousins says, "Hi!"

So many theories I don't know which one to back. The civil suite one will do for now.
I'm going to go with Crowley training to run the marathon for Australia in the next olympics. Hence all the laps. Freo just don't want to release a statement on it until Crowls has qualified.

What kind of weapon? A handgrenade ...5 seconds and you explode? :)

Including Ballantyne

Nothing as serious as drugs etc from what Ive heard. From a reasonable source (still rumours at the end of the day) I've heard that he's struggling a bit as he's going through a civil suite after hitting someone with his car. Was kept out of the papers initially and no drugs/DUI involved. Whatever it is hope he's back and 100% asap. Best of luck to him.

This is my favourite so far :D
