You can't call Ryder a big game player when he's only played in one, a 15 goal drubbing.
And Bob Skilton played in big games, for Victoria.

Well, no. We're talking about the 2 best ruckmen in the league. Clubs would still kill to have Cox on their list. Collingwood/Hawthorn/Geelong would sell the farm to get him. Naitanui, on the other hand, is many people's tip (including mine) to be the best player in the comp in a few years. Even if it was just Naitanui vs Ryder+Bellchambers, I'd still take NicNat.

Given the last decade I can't begrudge Essendon supporters thinking it's a big game.
But for Collingwood and the rest of the successful teams Finals > Anzac Day, Derbies and Showdowns.

Yeah, I guess its just because Collingwood has been such a powerhouse in the last decade, like in 2005.

Do people on here even pay attention to essendon games or are do they just base their opinions on games back in 2009 and 2010 when we were a rabble? One of the main reasons for our continual midfield improvement is patrick ryder and tom bellchambers putting it down the throat of our midfielders in the centre bounces (mainly jobe). This was shown against adelaide when they stitched up jacobs who is one of the best ruckman in the league. Individually they're just good players but as a duo they'd have to be second or third in the league due to their tap work and the danger they present in the forward line

Stopped reading when I saw Pyke/Mumford and Ryder/Bellchambers are better than NN/Cox.
Seeing one poster claim that Ryder is capable of being a superstar ruckman AND kick 60+ goals a year followed by another claiming Pyke and Mumford are the best duo in the AFL really questions what little faith I have in Bigfooty opinion.

They are all cut from the same cloth, guy i work with is going on about carlisle being all australian today, its round 3, bellchambers didnt even get picked every week last year, how can they be the best ruck combo or even close. Keep it up over more than a few weeks before we start with the excitement

Simple saying to that is the past is irrelevant.
Just like how all supporters are hearing how Pyke is a superstar, all of a sudden. so many supporters wanted him dropped before the Grand Final last year, because they were unsure he was good enough to play. He played well, and now he is a superstar. Also, Mumford has been decidedly average this year.
At the moment, Pyke and Mumford are ahead of Bellchambers and Ryder, at the end of the year, well, only time will tell.
Also, Carlisle has been the best key defender so far this year. Won't definitely be All-Australian, but if he continues the way he has, then he will be in contention, for sure.
We're talking about ruck man here not forward vs forward. Get with the program.
I see... which big games are those? You mean the ones mid-season against Melbourne? Didn't you lose derail your season against that rabble last year?
Who has he consistently beaten that can be considered a top 10 ruck?
No offence, that's three average ruck players, especially Jamar & Griffin, c'mon.
Watch last years finals series especially the GF where he was one of our best on field. A crocked Mumford >>>>> Bellchambers + Ryder.
Paid off handsomely in the end we've been able to win two grand finals and make another off the back of our ruck man:

- Jolly
- Mumford
As far as I can recall, Pyke is our only decent developed ruck man for years, with players like Jesse White, Currie, et al. and Seaby failing to deliver as a back up.
I was pretty pissed off that Jolly decided to hang out for the birth of his kid the night before the grand final in 2006. His performance was really poor and in the end it was his performance that set the teams apart. We were smashed in the ruck and it wasn't until our better players got involved in the 2nd half that we looked like we might win the match. I've always believed that had he put the team first and properly prepared for the match (or taken some amphetamines), he would have performed a lot better and we would have stood a better chance to win.

I don't think anyone here has said they are clearly the second best combination in the league. Most people, including Essendon supporters have said that Pyke and Mumford are Number 2 at the moment. Most pundits here have noted that at there best, could become the second best ruck combination in the league. Is that so difficult to fathom?
A 'crocked' Mumford in the Grand Final did nothing. Would much prefer either Bellchambers or Ryder over a 'crocked' Mumford everyday of the week. Twice on Sundays.
