I think I tried it fresh once. I seem to recall it being pretty bland. Not unlike what a pineapple might taste like if you reduced the flavour by 95%.

The cooked stuff however is wildly delicious. Underutilised in Australia. A perfect ingredient if you are trying to eat less meat and want a more natural meat substitute.
I’m seeing more and more jackfruit on menus as a meat free option. Mushroom remains my favourite meat alternative but a well done jackfruit is good too.

I've heard that a good use of excess limes is to juice them and freeze the juice in ice cubes for future use. Not a bad shout. I have yet to be to Exmouth but look forward to it. I loved coral bay.
I presented at a conference in Exmouth a few years ago. It was designed with morning sessions in mind, leaving the afternoon for sightseeing and taking in the sites. Not even a bout of motion sickness could ruin it :). I would happily go back and explore surrounding areas.

My dad used to work in Karratha and yet I’ve still never been. I am considering a short locum stint up north in 2023, when I’m back in WA. Let’s see where life takes me.

Jack fruit is also an attractive tree, just doesn't like dry conditions at all, but I reckon if your parents grow mango they'd likely be able to grow jack fruit as well

Can't go passed mushrooms. Are you able to tell the poison from the safe ones?

I was acquaintanced with a couple of losers once who ate toadstools thinking they were magic mushrooms. I wasn't there but was told an ambulance had to be called. Never saw them again so probably some truth in it. Both a bunch of dropkicks.

North as in WA? Or Australia?

No haha, so I stick to the shop ones. Boring , but safer all-round.

Last year we often looked after a kid who was frequently in hospital (every couple of weeks) because he would either eat or threaten to eat poisonous, wild mushrooms :/ . At 12 he was definitely old enough to know about the risks but sadly there were other issues there :( . I still think about him. And hope he’s ok.

Brown or pink gills. We have white gilled things grow up here by the bucket load, and some locals once told me you can eat them, but I gave it a miss. In the forests when it is damp we get coral mushrooms that taste a bit like melted cheese when cooked

Unsurprisingly, mangosteen is MUCH better than durian. Kind of like a lychee mixed with a mandarin (but that doesn't really tell you how truly tasty it is).
So now I know what the MC stands for
Mangosteen Clusiaceae

I can tell the regular field mushrooms with the dark gills, so will eat them if a see them in the wild. Otherwise I stay clear.

The story used to be dark underneath is OK but white underneath isn't. THIS IS WRONG!!

There are some with white underneath you can eat and some with dark underneath you can't eat. Unless it is a standard field mushroom I leave them alone.

MWPP if you come across any of these in your travels I'd recommend you just admire their beauty and leave them alone.

Aside - I was reading up on Cleo earlier
(miracle that she was found )
And perhaps because of that, this showed up on my feed

It brought back a memory of being approached in a park by a stranger promising books and chocolate when I was 6 . Luckily I said “no my mum wouldn’t let me” and walked away with no harm done, as I was fresh from a stranger danger talk but god kids are so impressionable and it’s even scarier now with technology :(

Sage advice and noted , thanks ER
This reminds me though Tommycash
-if the question was , which food item rather than simply fruit, I’d have said mushrooms- magical , versatile, exotic , diverse and potentially dangerous (don’t let the size and looks fool you).

You are also best to hand pollinate jack fruit. My tree has a few female flowers but no male ones at the present. They are designed to be wind pollinated like grass

That really sounds like you are breeding cattle.

Alice in Wonderland...magic mushie trip...

I had mangosteen once, I'd heard all the hype but I wasn't that impressed.

Jackfruit is one I've liked. I've never had it fresh, just as part of a stew or however they prepare it in SE Asia. I thought it was meat at first. It has such a meaty texture. I think you can get it tinned. The fresh ones in Australia are very expensive.

Yeah, jackfruit is used a lot as a meat substitute. There's a fantastic Vietnamese vegan restaurant in Sydney where you honestly wouldn't be able to tell that it's not meat. The "chicken" stir-fry was incredible and the "duck" pancake tasted better than any actual duck pancake I've ever had in my life. If anyone's interested, it's the Golden Lotus in Newtown (because of course it's in Newtown).
Oh, and a white sapote
So how big is this tropical backyard of yours?!?
Things thay annoy you. These are things not people. So don't go saying me.

1) When I see toilet paper loaded this way:

2) When I see a dishwasher loaded like this:

I have so many so would like to give others have a say on things that annoy you.
A MASSIVE yes to both of those, although with the dishwasher, you sometimes just have to get those oddly shaped things in any way you can. But the toilet paper one is inexcusable.

I'm amazed (and glad of course) that she was found "alive and well". I really thought she was gone. I wonder what went on, we'll find out soon enough.

It is really sad that today all the schools are fenced up like prisons. There have been a few stories very local to me lately of a couple of kids being followed by cars. It gets reported to the school/police but I don't know what action gets taken from there.

I remember all the stranger danger books and talks that I was given as a kid. That was back in the 80's.

I've eaten durian several times, including in a Hokkaido cheese tart and in a mooncake (terrible waste of a beautiful lotus paste and yoik mixture).
I'm still surprised at how I got used to the smell. I even miss it at times when I think of the hawker center down the road from where I lived.
Anyway, I eat a metric ton of mango because I can scoop it out of the skin with a SPOON!

1) Yep. I also get annoyed when the seat is left up, or if the toilet paper has run out but isn’t replaced. Having a double dispenser has helped but hasn’t entirely solved the problem
2) People Eg teachers licking their finger to turn a page. Gross.
(also why didn’t cutlery make an appearance for you haha?)

I was probably 10 or 11 when something kind-of similar happened to me. I had gotten off the train and really needed the toilet, so went down the way to a set of public toilets next to the train line. My mum had always warned me about not using that particular set of toiles (I'm not even sure why those ones and not others), so I looked around before I went in and noticed about 20 metres behind me was a guy walking down the hill that looked really suss. I can't quite recall what it was about him, but it freaked the crap out of me and I walked in and then out of the toilet block immediately. About halfway back to the station, I looked behind me again and the guy was following me back up the hill. So I picked up my pace and headed for the bus stop next to the station and thankfully there was a bus just sitting there, so I jumped on without even knowing where it was going. For the next minute or so, the guy stood at the bus stop with his hand down his pants looking at me through the window. I ended up miles away from home, but was just so relieved to be the hell away from him.

Reading that just brought a chill down my spine . Sickening . Especially the following , and finally the last part :/ . I’m so glad nothing worse happened , and that you had the presence of mind to get away, despite ending up so far away from where you intended. I hope it was just gut feel from your mum that resulted in the warning , rather than something more sinister though .

Just an average yard, I like trees...can't stand lawns, and sprinklers should be banned in this country, unless you are a footy oval. And agree re-TP it's a constant battle...although I think it is Wosh that prefers it the other way? Just recall a bit of banter from years back

Someone who eats their fruit with cutlery, now that is a person with class.

They were a pretty skeevy looking set of toilets, so it was probably just that. Even when I was living back at home for a while as an adult, I never once went inside that toilet block again.
