“Hayes was never up to AFL standard”

“The club was right”

Which is why we paid him to be here for 6 years.

😂
We had him here for 6 years hoping he would come good as we are told over and over that big fellas take longer to develop, sadly he just didn't develop anything other than a mild case of emphysema.

Hayes not fit enough obvious to say in hindsight but he was internally rated high enough pre debut to be our best seconds player playing in the ruck. Not everything is linear and not everything works out but you have to ask questions as to why a guy who was internally rated and also given six years had such an acrimonious last season. Hope he gets on well seems to be a great lad with genuine creative interests outside of footy which is rare.

Soldo is not the messiah. He's just a rehash of Scott Lycett from four or five years ago. Solid, but no better than that. It was a desperation move brought about by our own list management incompetence.
I get where you are coming from but even after the trade Richmond fans were saying he was better than Nank, and Nank was definitely better than Lycett.

No one was interested in Lycett or Treacle either.

The issue with Hayes is not what's happening now, it's what was happening while the season, and finals, were alive.

As your aware there is players on clubs list that you can’t believe are still on a list.

We can go back and forth till the cows come home but nothing is going to change the fact that his AFL career will always show 11 games played, not even in the same ballpark as John Rombotis.

Currently the same amount of games as Jordon Sweet who has been in the system for 5 years.

It's possible (i think highly) that Sam Hayes & John Butcher could've been put in the best development program in the league and still not made it.

Potentially, sure.

But both showed plenty of AFL level talent, including big dominant games. Both were famously not backed in by the coach despite playing positions where developing players have growing pains.

We've got a total of 1 KPF and 0 ruckmen who have been developed to AFL standard by this club in the last 20 years. Do we really think it's just that we haven't drafted any good ones? In 20 years?

If John Butcher plays for any other club in the league, he's probably a 200 gamer, not a hall of famer, but a good solid KPF. Levi Casboult has played 195 games, for example. He definitely plays at least 50 games. Not here though, here despite crying out for a key forward.

The amount of talls we have burnt through during Kenny Average's reign that we have not developed or underdeveloped is quite startling and the reason we have to pay overs for tall timber.

I am a bit worried for the 2022 draft class which has 3 tall players because if you take a look over at the backline all starting KPDs are imports. Now the rucks are both imports. All but one KPF is an import.

This is why I am very suspicious of the idea that the boys are behind Kenny Average and even to the obvious point that that is a good thing. I think a lot of Power media performers are behind Kenny but I think it would be hard and downright disheartening when you watch the final against the Giants last year and you see favourites on the bench injured before half time.

I think one of the issues that stems from Kochgobbler and Kenny Average trickles down from the rotting head is that there is no accountability within the organisation and this flows down eventually to the players. Football players like contested, one on one work and we seem to be team orientated to a fault. And without that ruthlessness, the opposition will always have a door open unless the game is played on our terms.

I dont get why so many are reluctant to believe that maybe Sam just didnt develop as we would have hoped. I dont get why so many are reluctant to believe that he came back in a less than prime condition at the start of the year.

If the best we could hope for John Butcher was him becoming a comparison to arguably the worst long term kpf of the modern era whos played in 1 final in 13 years then im kinda glad we cut our losses with him.

Never have got the Butcher love, looked top shelf the year before we drafted him but made Fantasia look like Superman when we picked him up along with Moore both top ten picks.
People will say he was the only option at our pick, if a totally banged up player is your only option at pick 8 you’re praying for a miracle.
Thankfully our drafting has improved since then.

Jeez, there is some rubbish in that post! He had a back issue, "totally banged up" is a bit of hyperbole! He was an undoubted talent in that draft, and showed it in that much spoken about debut season. The fact the he got the Ian Baker-Finch syndrome, and we couldnt help him through it, will always be debated. Was it his fault? Was the club to blame?

Now Hayes has been another that has failed to come on. We have since seen both Marshall & Lord develop nicely though, so the debate will continue. I am certainly not going to throw shade on our recruiters though. Sure, there have been a few bombs, but we are def no worse than any other club, with some of our drafting over the last 15 years being pretty damn good.

Jake Neade played more high level football than Russell Ebert.
Neade played more games in an elite competition - and he played them at an ordinary to average level at best.

Russ produced about 450 more "elite" performances in his career, including in his one season in the VFL, where he played probably 15 very good games and polled well in NM's B&F plus in the Brownlow - which is more than Jake did over his entire career.

But essentially what you've written is correct, based on my first sentence!

Perhaps I need to highlight my sarcasm more vividly when taking the piss at 240volt.
