Why not just keep him on a lower wage and transition him into coaching in 2018 on a better wage
??
If u can fit spud vickory in with JOM and swans mitchell then you could fit Sam in instead of vickory.
Vickory is not going to step up and win you anything ffs

As Sam stated, this is a family decision
He has a bunch of young children about to reach school age. He and his wife thought moving now may be the best for the kids, by starting their schooling in WA rather than moving them after 1 year

Mitchell is also a gun and doesnt miss many games. Mitchell is on a one year deal.

you can splice it how you want but offering wells that money for 3 years is stoopid.

His employment as coach is dependent on his employment as player. It is a carrot, with high salary (as all coaches get) to entice a player over that other clubs may not be able to afford.

That's about all that's left in this conversation.

Is one employment dependent on the other? Will he not be allowed to play if he doesn't coach, or vice-versa?
He's not shopping himself around to the highest bidder. He wants to move to WA when he retires and he wants to be a coach. He doesn't WANT to leave Hawthorn. He's not chasing big money or a flag.
He's not ready to retire, but an opportunity presented where he can kill three birds with one stone - play, move to WA with his young family and kick start a coaching career. There's no big conspiracy here.

What is the point of your questioning?

How is this different to Judd being a Visy ambassador? It was just a job, right? He was being paid for a job. Nothing to do with football.
He was paid for a job as well as playing football, you know at the same time?
If Mitchell was being paid to coach and play, then you would have an argument.

Clarko asks Sam if he wants to move to

Of course we can pay Mitchell. The club is looking after an absolute legend in the brown and gold by helping his transition into coaching go as smoothly as possible.

Spin it any way you like, but everyone involved in this has handled it with nothing but pure class. Just a shame other clubs don't follow suit.

Thanks for the memories Sam. You'll be welcomed back with open arms in a few years when you take over from Clarko. :)
yes you are doing this purely to help sam...

And regardless of whether they pay him out or not?

I was of the understanding that because they made an offer the Hawks couldn't match, they were compelled by the AFL to pay Buddy the full contract and that it would all be counted under the cap.
No, what Buddy gets paid is a matter for him to negotiate with the Swans. He can retire now and agree to forgo all payments if he likes, or receive 500K a year or whatever else they agree to. But all of the original contract must be included in the salary cap.

Do people really truly think Clarkson would sell or just kick Mitchell out?

For crying out loud look at what they have achieved together, listen to the respect in their voices when they talk about each other.

I know BigFooty is all about measuring schlongs (and for the record I have the largest), but trying to take pot-shots at the club over the way this has been handled is laughable.

ANyone who thinks this is disrespectfuol from any party is deluding themselves

WC approached hawthorn last year purely to talk about coaching, hawks ok'd it.

Hawthorn/clarko approached mitchell as a loyal servant to give him the option

Mitchell with the blessing from family and club made a decision that suits his family.

I'm just hoping from a WC POV we get him for unders on the playing salary with the promise of a fat assistant coaching cheque.

Wells did not miss many games last year and IF we keep Wells Fit he can still be very good for Collingwood

Why did he bother signing a contract extension then?

I reckon Mitch had every intention of playing at hawthorn next year before taking up a coaching role the year after until Clarko came and said to him "why don't you move now?... No seriously, move now - please."

Ah, the rot has already started to set in. THREE marque players in a single offseason, all taking up a massive chunk of the cap.

Hawthorn will kill their depth with these signings, as they continue to shed players to fit in these monster contracts. Why would players like Breust, Poop, and Gunstan continue to play on sub-par contracts when the three Melbourne Millionaires are earning so much more?

Not to mention the effect that this will have on the famous Hawthorn culture...

As a lover of all things Hawthorn, my only hope is that the AFL will rescue the Hawks from destroying their own club by gifting them with some form of trade restriction that lasts until Sam Mitchell's Swisse payments are no longer part of their cap.

But it had to pass through the AFL and be signed off on. Same as Buddy's deal. Same as Scully's dad. Same as Sam's will be.
If it's deemed excessive or looks to be circumventing the rules, the AFL will make them include it in the cap.

Great move by the Hawks. What they get back is really irrelevant as its all about what this allows them to do with FA's. Not enough teams looking at how to create cap space (ala NBA) in this way.

Thanks for clarifying.
