Ok then. The hawk tears would be a better sight.

The Hawks going out in straight sets and their most decorated player being traded out would make for the best year in football since 2011.

You're aiming low. Why not hope we make the GF, and then beat us. If Hawk fan tears is what drives your happiness, surely that is the ultimate scenario. A close second would surely be us making the GF against WC and having Sam collect the Norm Smith in a winning WC team? I'm disappointed in your lack of imagination.

Coming from the bloke who's team relies so heavily on players you took from other clubs....

I suspect that Brad Hill and Mitch for West Coasts 1st rnd, then maybe an exchange of picks later on.

Hill wants to go to the West and this would be a viable option for him, he would prefer Freo but I think he would accept this deal.
Don't want Hill to be honest.

Pick upgrade, seems a straight forward deal.

Not at Mitchell but the club.

Try reading the thread on your own board, there's a lot of disbelief and some ridiculous posts on what he's worth. When the Hawks don't get a 1st rounder and 2nd rounder and a player in return, there will be a fair few bitter supporters.
I don't read club boards. Minutes of my life I would never get back.
I get the disbelief part, it's a bit of a shock waking up and hearing it, quite out of left field.
People can feel whatever they feel, but I just don't get how any Hawthorn supporter can possibly be angry at the club. They've given their supporters incredible value for money, wonderful times, memories, success. This decision is in clubs best interests, whether all of it's fans think so or not.
Selfish in the extreme to be angry about it IMO

My take on it is that Mitchell was tapped on the shoulder and told that next year would be his last at the hawks. The eagles might have approached him and promised him 2 or more years with the sweetener of a coaching gig at the end of his playing contract.

I think that is a misreading. Mitchell was already talking to WC about a coaching role a year ago, this allows him to make the transition west as smooth as possible for his young children. We gave players who look a lot closer to cooked than Sam 1 year contracts, I reckon we'd have been happy to keep giving Sam 1 year contracts if we kept himself even close to his current form. Sam was probably planning one more year with Hawthorn before moving to coaching our West, and this deal just makes it easier, and will hopefully suit the club in some way too (although I'm not seeing how right now, I'd much rather seeing him playing in a Hawthorn jumper next year).

Clubs offer players deals all the time, your club, my club, every club does it, if you don't know this, you have your head in the sand.
What difference is offering a player a post career, and offering a player more game time, or leadership role?
This is a salary inducement over and above his player earnings.

Clubs offer recently retired players jobs as low level assistants, and there's not much the AFL can do about this, but recruiting a player into your club with the promise to pay them afterwards is rorting the cap. You are giving them an incentive to play for your club that other clubs may not be able to afford.

Sydney should have just promised Buddy that they'd offer him a coaching role at the end of a five year contract and they could have escaped having his money included under the cap when he's 36 and likely retired.

Hahaha All those other clubs salty ramblings about being a salary dump, Vickery downside, earth being flat whatever need to sit up and take notice.

Hawthorn FC doing what's right for a legend of our club. For him, his family, WC Eagles and Hawthorn FC.

Clarkson is as one other said " Light years in front with FA,trades and drafting.

Hawthorn FC absolutely OWNING the whole trade period while your clubs sit there watching our every move in anticipation of what you wish you had the balls to do instead of playing with mrs. palmer under the desk.

Good luck Sam ! You owe us nothing. Have given your absolute all to our mighty club.

This is how it's done minnows.

Maybe - BigFooty is not representative of the membership as a whole though for any club (thank Christ). Some will be annoyed, but it's hardly a Trent Croad situation here.

There wont be IMO.

The fact that it seems Clarkson didn't force him into it and Mitchell seems receptive to the idea makes the pill a lot easier to swallow. No one is expecting a first rounder for him, that's for sure.

Vickery contact already pushing players out?

I hope not.

Imagine being Vickery thinking you've finally left Richmond and can no longer being the whipping boy... Only to move to a club and may inadvertently have caused the best player of that club's great era, and top 5 player of all time, to move on...... Imagine what the everyday fans are thinking right about now

No chance... the Hill to Freo trade is already agreed pending the Chris Mayne deal and compensation. A lot of trades have been held up with this one.

The fact one of the best players in the game is involved in this and there's one page rather than a 40 page meltdown thread....shows how much credibility anyone gives this one. Amazed a so called journo (even one as poor as Hagdorn) would put his name to it.

So, given events over the last two hours I'm going to do something very un BigFooty like. Turns out the rumour is very credible, I was completely wrong.

It's not rorting the cap, show me the rule that says this.
If it's in the rules, then how can it be rorting the cap?
Every other club can offer the same deal, is it right? maybe not, but it is done all the time.
It's a bribe, more game time, is exactly the same.

Yep - Vickery for 500k and you can't afford to pay Mitchell.

I'd be happy just to take Eric McKenzie in a straight swap rather than an obscure pick. We need tall defenders, and though the idea of trading Mitchell makes me sick perhaps it could work out well for both clubs.

I bet you would...

If we did that I'd riot.

A WC poster advised McKenzie is on a pretty good contract which would be an issue for us.
