Coach Sam Mitchell's direction for the club and 2024 news

If anyone wants to have a listen about what the data is saying in regards to whether we have actually gotten worse this year have a listen to this from the 9:15 mark.

I know a few people have already touched on it, but the data is also showing that our results this year have been slightly better despite actually putting out a younger team and dealing with some injuries.

And here.

IT’S SAM’S TEAM

Vandenberg cannot wait for fans to see what Mitchell and his new-look team have cooking.
Does it already feel like Mitchell’s club?
“Certainly within the four walls of the football club. Absolutely it feels that way,” Vandenberg said.
“I think what the players are starting to see with Sam is what we as a board assessed Sam on, and that helped us make the decision to choose him in the first place.
“His ability to build and galvanise relationships and galvanise a playing group is a little bit understated.
“It’s not until you get into the chair (as senior coach) that people really get to see it.
“It’s very early days but the players have just started to have a taste of how he’s going to go about it.”
Are we going to see a noticeable change to the game-plan?
“Yeah, I think you will,” Vandenberg said.
“You will see different game style. He has got a… I will leave it at that.”
Vandenberg pulls back so he can leave it to the coach to outline those changes, but the idea of a tactical overhaul from Clarkson’s brilliant methods is thoroughly intriguing whether it succeeds or fails.

I wonder if the new style is why we haven't fully embraced uploading the scratch matches/match simulations. Sure - other clubs are welcome to plant people at our training but being that we finished well outside the 8 is anyone going to bother? If we are trying something that is a bit of a departure then I am happy to not give other clubs too much advance notice before the practice games start.

Interesting piece in The Age at ‘A nice dynamic’: The four pillars of the Magpies’ new midfield on how Macrae and Bolton are organising Collingwood's midfield.

For those who can't get behind the paywall, in summary they have four categories:
1 Good decision-makers (eg Pendlebury). These will rotate between midfield and half back.
2 Explosive (eg De Goey). These will rotate between midfield and forward.
3 Inside bull (eg Taylor Adams). These will mostly stay on-ball.
4 Running/outside (eg Sidebottom). These will mostly work on the wings but with short periods on-ball.

Nothing revolutionary here but interesting to see it set out in such a structured way.

I doubt it. We just don’t value sharing that kind of content. Maybe that will change in future. We have made good progress this off season.

No surprise that De Goey didn't make the cut for good decision-makers category.

Looks like the Clarko model 😉

With Bolton in charge of their midfield they need more than TheFourPillars to give them a lift. 😂

They already have no forward line and hardly a backline. Now we’ve sent Bolton to destroy their midfield.

Well the latter was more to my point, we tend to be adopting a new approach with the social channels and people have said that Sam and the club want more member engagement. More people here seem to want the live stream or at least an upload of the full matches (I am not one of them - I can wait until the practice games myself) so I was just curious if this might become a feature but they held fire this year so as to not give away too much of the new way of playing.

I don't understand the logic by Cooney. Have a good back six that will be hard to get into. Have a forward line that could click. Day looks great and they have some good youngsters coming through.

I'll put them down for one less than last year :drunk:

Cooney says about 1 smart thing every 3 months, and the rest of the time he's playing the clown.

I was about to post the same...

Not to mention Gunston and Sicily back who missed the whole year...

Yet we'll be...two games worse...because...errrr..Clarko!

IMO, 10 wins and still miss top 8 is more realistic for us this season.

If Sydney and Essendon surprised most of us last year by making the 8, then why can't we do the same this year ... or at least nab 10 wins.

Essendon defeat 1 top 8 side for the year and now have a harder draw and people think they'll finish higher again in 2022.

Hawthorn defeat 5 top 8 sides for the year and now have an another easier draw and people think they'll go backwards in 2022.

Can't help but feel that it has a little bit to do with people not wanting Hawthorn to be any good.

Cant wait to see Kane Cornes' face when Dylan Moore rips this comp to shreds this year.

He was mortified his love child Rozee wasn't named as elite by Champion this year. EAD you flog. Never seen a more biased commentator in my time.

Have you heard about how good *'s youth are? The way they get pumped up I am surprised there's not a few in the media tipping them to win an undefeated flag.

This makes sense. General consensus from this board appears to be between 6 and 10 wins.
That's exactly that is suggested in this article.

If you gave me a 9-13 season right now with Day, Moore, DGB, Ward, Macdonald, Lewis, Brockman and Kosi all playing a big part then I'd take it on the spot. Finals would absolutely be the expectation in 2023.
