Player Watch Sam Murray - (Delisted 2019)

This thread I think could now be utilised for Sam Murray the player type critiques and gloating for those who id'd his talent early (kisses own biceps).

Maybe we need a dedicated ant-f*cking thread to deal with the minutiae - two Sam Murray threads. A revelation in Bigfooty history. I say that as one who has participated in this endeavour.

You continue to miss the point.
Nobody is debating that we won the trade. Sam is going to be a very good footballer.
BUT in a year where mid tier players were getting traded for peanuts, we paid well over for a rookie. Well over!
If you debate that fact, then you're a moron and it's no wonder you're missing the point.

Fast forward 6 months and the people who were critical of the trade at the time are being told by the "toldyousoers" that we were wrong. We weren't. I have apologised for underestimating the player we were getting but the question, "did we pay too much for a rookie listed player? still has the answer of Y.E.S.

I would have thought the more moronic behavior was forming such a steadfast opinion based on uninformed assumptions, but that's just me.

But whose to say he was mid tier, clearly Swans rated him highly as they played hard ball and if you read reports Longmire gave him a mouthful and Collingwood rated him highly because we used the higher draft picks. so purely based on Evidence in A) what the actual trade was. and B) his form thus far. one can only assume he was rated higher then mid tier. as opposed to the rumour and innuendo from the media which were clearly ill informed on their belief of his value.

They shouldn't be but they barrack for north so you have to question there judgement
Can't kick and 1 sided
Bad influence
Undisciplined on and off field
Not fast

Tell em to wait till they play someone who ain't finishing bottom 5
You should question your own judgement.

You should question your own judgement.

Yeah he's terrific to you

Pity the other 17 clubs think so highly they didn't want him , but your judgements spot on and better than all who work in the industry

Shame for him and us your not involved , we wouldn't have thrown him away then

Damn

Now you're getting it.

What teams pay for players and their subsequent worth relative to the trade, is based on performance.
Hird was an unbelievable pickup at 54, and many teams overpaid for busts eg Rich with Tambling.

So the simple question is - given what we now know of Murray and his performances to date, would we do the same deal TODAY.

I think the answer is a resounding yes - so by any definition it was a good deal.

I doubt even the critics of the deal here would answer NO to the above question.
Once traded, a players value is always assessed AFTER the fact not before.

So end of debate IMO.

If you are talking about Witts then he had interest from Dogs, Ess and Gc. GC won him over due to Rocket Eade.

I haven’t been following this closely but can we still get Quaynor, Kelly and Lynch at season’s end?
Yes but depending on where bids come in it may end up knocking us out of the main draft after our first round and potentially taking us into deficit.

So here's hoping they are better talents then you will get in the draft in general.

On the bolded, are you for real? And you accuse others of not doing any research!

He’s currently ahead or breaking even with at least half or more of those guys you listed.

It's all in the definition of domination

Most on here bag cox

Never saw witts get 40 hitouts 24 marks and kick 6 like mason , if you have let me know

That's domination

I'll say this about Sam Murray -- He is already one of my favourite players at the club and makes me want to go to the footy to watch him. :thumbsu:
I really like your post Kirby, and I feel the same way. Murray is a breath of fresh air in our backline with his drive. It’s exciting to watch.

I was one of the people who complained about the trade cost last year but I have been proven wrong. I have been impressed by Sam's footy this year and he fills an important role in the backline. Also well done Dekka for great player id.

I love this bloke and couldn’t give a rats what we paid for him anymore. It’s great to see a player with flair running around for Collingwood for once. Let’s just enjoy the wild ride he’s going to take us on over the next few years.

Sure It seemed a lot to pay at the time, but 2nd round picks aren’t all they’re cracked up to be anyway. I know I’ll get more enjoyment out of watching Murray burn off forwards than hoping another skinny flanker develops well in the VFL.

We traded a future 2nd rounder for WHE a while back as well and ended up taking the guy we would have taken with that pick in the 3rd round anyway (Murphy) so ended up losing nothing.

Besides, we’ll be above Sydney on the ladder on Wednesday night with every chance of staying that way by the end of the year. That will make the drop in pick even less than it could have been.

Played really well, again.

Interesting for a player of his type/position his kick-to-handball ratio.

7 kicks, 16 handballs - you would think on face value that would be the other way around, would like him to get that much closer to 50/50 as he is quite a nice user.

He looks to be very good by hand . Some of his handballs against the Crows was first class. I think the ratio on the weekend was about taking best/only option available at the time.

I complained to my father in-law about the Murray trade. He’s a big Swans fan and was even on the South Melbourne list back in the day.
He attempted to tell me that we’d got a winner in Sam, I was very underwhelmed. He was disappointed the swans couldn’t hang on to him, I was disappointed we paid a second rounder for him. Now he’s laughing at me and I’m laughing with joy.

Definitely raised an eyebrow at the price at the time but now think it may turn out to be a fairly inspired move. Murray is golden, exactly what we needed. Will be better than Saad if he’s not already (who cost a 2nd rounder straight if I’m not mistaken). But here’s the kicker, if Quaynor falls in the range anticipated by Hine, as well as other FS/academy selections, well then we effectively have paid nothing for Murray. Free player. Free line-breaking, lightning fast HBFer which was a dire need and who transforms the way we move the ball. That’s not just good that’s f***ing genius. If the cards fall differently so be it, we’ve still done very well IMO. It’s a bit of a gamble, but so far so good.

Hine is the master. Suddenly our list is looking like a potential premier.
