I just can't fathom chucking it in a dam so close to a house? And during the day?
It makes sense to me to dispose of it on private property. If it was dumped in a creek or river, or out in the bush it could be accidentally found by any number of people - kids yabbying or swimming, etc, bushwalkers, or metal detectorists out for a swing. On private property that risk of discovery is vastly reduced.

And by tossing it into a dam near a house, maybe he was thinking along the lines that it seems so unlikely that no-one would even entertain the idea? And maybe assumed that by the time the water level dropped enough to uncover the spot it landed, that the phone would’ve sunk into the sludge and not be visible anyway. Dunno. Would be interesting to know what led the police to even look there in the first place.

Hopefully, if it was the occupants of the property that told police they saw someone chucking something into their dam, it wasn't last February when they told them.

Wasn't it a phone call from jail?

FAIK that's unconfirmed and might be inconsistent with his behaviour. I'd expect someone who'd resisted the police and got through a 'no comment' interview' in a murder investigation would probably know that prison calls are all recorded and have the discipline not to say anything that might help the cops.

Interesting all her cards, ID were in there, as though someone wanted the police to know it was her phone
Or as if someone was in such a panicky rush to get rid of it they weren't thinking straight before chucking it.

Anybody know if there was any cash found? Notes or coins?
It wasn't a wallet. There's only so much room in those folders and they won't close if there are too many cards in them. I can only fit a couple of cards in mine, but generally I don't bother.

Depends what they’re made out of though, and if they have the flip-over magnetic tab, which helps. My Mimco one is leather, and just looking at it now I’ve got 4 x cards in the slots (2 of those are in the 1 slot), a couple of folded 50’s, an appt card for dr, a hole-punched coffee loyalty card and a random receipt. Closes perfectly fine.

But her body has been painstakingly hidden

Yes it appears that way. IMO perp killed SM on the Sun morning, hid her, came back and moved her somewhere further away well hidden. It's going to be in bush somewhere within an hour's drive of where the phone was discovered.

Bushland is the best bet. I don't reckon a perp would have used a river as they are all relatively shallow and probably quite easy to be eventually stumbled upon accidentally.

If I were a betting man I'd be looking in bushland about 1-1.5 hours drive in a southerly direction from where SM's phone was dumped. The perp must have been heading south for a reason from the alleged location of the murder, Mt Clear.

Perhaps the reason POS was arrested was because DNA of SM was discovered in his car and he simply refused to cooperate when asked to explain why.

Maybe disposing in water and dams might have been his panicked train of thought at the time which makes me think Samantha’s body is in water somewhere?

Possibly but rivers are not very deep. Easy for someone random to find a body in a river. Are there any large reservoirs within an hour's drive of where the phone was discarded? A private dam is not really an option, they often get drained during droughts. It would be more likely IMO that a perp would bury her deep in bushland somewhere.

Unlikely. They didn't even search his car until after they arrested him.

No need to flaunt your wealth mate

Not necessarily.

Are you familiar with the Ballarat region?

There are hectares and hectares of bush, forests, farmland, rivers, creeks, mine shafts and so on.

Some spots only accessible by 4wd (which POS) had.

Plenty of places where people don’t typically walk through but a person that grew up there and was into hunting or biking would know all about.

I understand the area. But he was quite happy to throw SM phone wallet into a dam with all her cards including her ID which could easily be found, and has. But why didn't he put the phone and any of her personal belongings hidden with her body ? He has to dump her body somewhere as well. To me, it looks like you having one a scatter brain and then a well-organised planned on hiding SM body.
