Having seen alot of this boy playing over here for Peel and Halls Head footy club before that it was a given that he'd one day play AFL.

After a strong debut season for the league side for Peel Thunder playing predominantly as a ruckman he displayed a strong work ethic and a sticky pair of hands.

I still maintain his best position is as a ruckman but it appears the Dons have pigeon holed him as a KPF.

He was taken pick 2 despite some question marks over his field kicking and after 2 years of constant injuries is it fair to say this boy is finally stamping himself as a future forward option of some note?

His hands tonight were exceptional, a feature of his junior career, but I still worry about his kicking.

Im not sure he's making the most of his obvious ability to pull in strong marks, his kicking is still poor.

Why havent Essendon addressed this and should they improve this aspect could he be the next big thing?

Glad to See Scotty finally putting games together. :thumbsu:

He does have quite an awkward kicking style. I mean we can compare it to Fevola obviously they are totally different players.

For such a high pick it is a bit of a worry?
I mean its probably easier to teach good kicking then strong contested marking.

He took some good marks tonight though =)

Not yet. Just bubbling along at the moment.

It will happen though, maybe sometime this season when he just explodes. Mind you, his opposition was pathetic tonight.

Im even glad he;s starting to play

He;s about 3 years behind where he should be, im just glad he's starting to contribute to the team.

in 3 years he's going to be one of the top three CHF in the comp, Holds onto everything and has a bloody huge tank for a guy who;s been crippled for 2 years

Fair enough, I thought that was his best game from a marking perspective.

I do agree his opposition was pretty average. Stratton and Hodge are not capable of running or competing with a monster like Gumbleton.

The Hawks are really struggling down back and in the ruck.

Stratton's not bad it's just sizewise he's such a mis-match.

Very Promising for Gumbleton however, You cant take anything away from his preformance, he's running, marking and contributing which every Football fan is happy to see.

Pretty sure that's exactly what I said.

But I'll add this, Stratton adds nothing the otherway, is there room for blokes like that nowadays?

I'd suggest if there is the said stopper needs to be elite, Stratton is not and will not be elite from a stopping regard.

He is slowly improving everyweek, shows more and glimpses as his confidence grows. His strong hands and massive reach make him near impossible to spoil without chopping the arms.

i reckon he may turn out to be a decent ruckman as well. i can see him just playing all over the ground. and with hurley and neagle up forward, and hille and ryder both being decent forward options along with hooker, i like the versatility of our talls.

also glad to see him out there.

I really hope so, Lucas was very good but we haven't had that endless tank CHF for a very long time, every team that has one does well, there were questions on Reiwoldt's kicking as well back in the day now look at him :)

Roo's kicking was related to his set shots.

Gumby really hoists his kicks with an agricultural drop, and really it's a liability outside of scoring range.

Well said, either way he's proof that a KPP can change his kicking style.
Even Franklin has done it a fair bit, actually tries to kick straight now
Really excited about Hurley and Gumbleton as a forward line pair.

Riewoldt has only now just learned to kick. Gumby's technique is not far off it, he'll be just fine

As we all know, Fevola has an unusual kicking style... but he wasn't doing it from day one. I remember hearing him say he was taught the style, it didn't just naturally come to him. So I'm pretty sure forwards can experiment with their kicking styles over time.

With that said, I really see nothing wrong with his style of kicking now. Sure, it's unorthodox, but his conversion rate so far this year isn't too bad is it?... he's a big kick with a powerful leg... he'll be right. :thumbsu:

Im not talking about his kicking at goal, it's his field kicking that is a concern.

If's he's going to play CHF, and that appears the role he's been given, he needs to improve his kicking to a target.

At the moment it's almost a turnover when he attempts to spot someone up.

That's why I think CHF is Hurleys best position

Looked completely out of his depth against Geelong, but he has got better and better since then. Has played well the last two weeks, but it's a little hard to gauge his form as his opponents have been Reid and Stratton/Hodge. Let's see how he goes against Port, who possess two quality key defenders.

He has a great pair of sticky hands and he possesses a tank only the likes of Roo and Cloke possess. If he can even reach the level of Cloke Essendon would be fairly happy.

He's a work in progress and I think/hope he'll get better by the second half of the season.

Don't talk down Fevola's kicking as evidence that Gumbleton's will improve.

Fevola was always a great kick.

Fev kicked like Lockett in that millenium match to nail a dozen goals.

amonst the crap that essendon dished out on ANZAC day I was very impressed with the way this bloke covered the ground for a big bloke. Looks the goods!
