Lots of ways to cut this cake, Pendlebury played more games at his best than any Richmond player I've ever seen.
You can look at stats or how he helped his side, and for consistency and preparation Pendles is up there with Buckley and Carey.
"Nobody thinks" maybe think about it a bit more yourself.

Pendlebury is not in the top 5 footballers of the last 20 years.
He has played the most games and that’s an achievement.

"Good accumulator" describes someone like Jack Macrae when he was clear best 22. Maybe a Josh Dunkley, Tim Taranto or Darcy Parish.
It undersells someone who's been an elite ball user and decision maker for well over a decade.

Yes he is a very good ball user but not a tough/ hard man in the tradition of other AFL greats like Skikton, Mathews, Lockett ect

Pendlebury is definitely not a "good accumulator" - like you say it undersells him. I also don't think Dunkley fits that term either. One of the most underrated mids in the comp. His defensive work in the midfield is especially off the charts good. The Crouch/Taranto/Parish types more fit that category imo.

The reason I have Pendlebury at #4 in the 21st Century is quite simple.
I look at the respective players best X number of games / X number of seasons to deduce who the better player was.
Take Pendlebury v. Martin, for example.
Pendlebury has:
2 of the best 3 seasons;
3 of the best 5 seasons;
7 of the best 12 seasons;
12 of the best 20 seasons;
15 of the best 25 seasons;
And
53 of the best 100 games;
110 of the best 200 games;
168 of the best 300 games;
235 of the best 400 games:
290 of the best 500 games;
350 of the best 600 games.
And that's before we factor in on-field leadership.

So 2000 people stayed home specifically to avoid witnessing Pendlebury's 400th, so he didn't bore them to death.
In the dead of winter, same season, same venue, 92k turn up to witness Dusty's 300th game between teams sitting about 13th & 17th on the ladder, with the smallest rivalry in footy. A game that would normally attract a crowd around 45-50k. They turned up just to catch a glimpse and honour the greatest big game player in the sport's history, and for no other reason, just to say they were there.
The people spoke. And only Fadge didn't listen.
Just to let you know, out of me & Nick Daycare in senior footy, I have played 15 of the best 18 seasons. After reading Fadge's post above, I now realise I was incredibly under-rated as a footballer.

I rate Bucks ahead of Pendles too.
To me this is an unsolvable, are we picking them to win one game? Give me Ablett 1989 or Dusty 2019.
Are we picking them to build a team around? Few better than Pendles.
Do you rate then for their best footy? GAS has them all covered.
Is it about some mix of quality and quantity? Carey rises close to the top, more brilliant than Bucks and neatly as consistent, even injured. Under this regime Pendles is top 5 this century.
The very best at [some footy skill]? Daicos had the best trick shots, Loewe the best hands, Lockett the best formal kick (drop punts, stabs, torps, everything flawless).
Pendles has elite evasion, a niche footy skill. His disposal is incredibly reliable, abs rarely has poor games.
I see you're serious but go easy on the dismissive language, if you're irritated you've admitted defeat.

B. We have a (near) full career from both Pendlebury and Martin to assess. And there's only one player in whose favour the numbers can continue to change.

FYI - Goodes debuted in 1999, so shouldn't be considered.
So Hawkins would be there with 250 games?
Regardless.... who would have thought that players adding to their legacies by playing more great games (I.e. Pendlebury in his 383rd game in the 2023 Grand Final; Hawkins in his 327th game in the 2022 Grand Final) would be a thing?
Unthreatening Scott undoubtedly a great player.
