Scott Pendlebury - Standing in the game?

Ha ha ha. I’ll be honest, I haven’t followed this thread closely but what jumped out at me was someone bestowing a high degree of credence to “a discussion between objective industry professionals”.

Reminds me of the good old days when Falcon thought he’d won any argument by saying “there’s an ARTICLE!!”
Passing that off as giving him an objective opinion was a particular highlight. 3 journo's going "I reckon player X gets this many points for this category". That should have been turned into a peer reviewed research paper.

Not to mention the fact the journos retrofitted their points to the lists they compiled from their 'vibe'...

GAJ and Martin the same points for 'longevity'... give me a break.

Really?

Because when I went to school, I was taught that one plus 'a couple' is three.

How long have you been on social media in the last 48hrs?
It’s not healthy Fadge

A few comments. I was alive when Matthews was playing and he was a feared (even hated) and respected foe, but there was no talk about him being the GOAT.

Since he retired his impressive paper trail won him converts among the stats nerds and finally in official circles.

Pendles glittering stats should see his reputation balloon once he retires and the people who saw him play thin out.

He's already highly rated for skills, big game performances, leadership, professionalism , durability, consistency and character, so much so he's admitted to be top 10 this century by anyone with a brain.

In 30 years he'll be in GOAT contention.

curious as to how you’d rate his 2021 season. from my (albeit limited) game memory he looked pretty ordinary at times during the season, though that could be broadly reflected on collingwood given their ordinary season
IIRC Pendles had a down year each time he and his missus had a kid.

I have nephew in the sports shoe game (got a nod from Dusty in his Brownlow speech) and he has the odd coffee with Pendles. He said he was wrecked with the first kid and only a bit better with the second, insisted on pulling his weight at home.

I mean I did with my kid, lots of sleepless nights and burned all my LSL, hes a decent man doing the right thing in my estimation .....but.....i feel bad saying this, but could the club spring for a nanny?

Nope, as his peak coincided with the peaks of GAJ and Buddy - the clear best two players of the 21st century.
That is where the AFL rankings (whether you agree or disagree with detail of them) are at least having a crack.

Like tennis rankings, take ratings points collected over a rolling period of games (40 from memory) and the player with most is number 1.

As without a ranking type system, it is only ever a vibe type thing...which is why each year often multiple winners of different best player awards.

GAJ was clearly the best player in the game from 07-14. As an example Swan may have pushed him for a specific season, but everyone knew GAJ was still the best. Even in 2014, GAJ was flying until he did his shoulder and still the best player in the game but as he only lasted to Rd15, so didn't get any awards.

Since GAJ went down it then bounced around - Pendles, Fyfe, Danger before Dusty had his run

After Dusty again many different players win different awards.

T.Mitchell ever a #1 with a brownlow and MVP?
Was Neale a #1? Players MVP, coaches award and 2 brownlows.
Carlton fans will push Crippa.
C.Oliver had back 2 back coaches awards
Touk Miller a coaches fav.
And then you have Bont who got a coaches award and gets the player love with 3 MVPs.
And 2023/24 saw the arrival of Daicos.

Good luck agreeing on a #1 player at any point without a proper ranking

Yeah, I don't feel there's been a standout #1 player in the comp since GAJ, who performed as the #1 player in the comp more often than not.

Before GAJ, it was Carey in the late 90's (which was no mean feat, considering we had Hird, Voss and Buckley in their prime).

But GAJ started the short priced favourite for the Brownlow every year between 2008 (after his breakout 2007) to 2015, and was in the mix most years.

Daicos is the first to be in that position since GAJ, having started the 2024 season as a clear favourite, and again multiple points ahead of the next line of betting heading into the 2025 season.

I guess I need to simplify this even more and dumb it down

Lebron James has played lots which gives fuel to the fire he is the GOAT. Some people suggest he isn't even in the top 5 NBA players of all time

If you want a more able comparison, Dirk Nowitzki is more like Pendles. Very good player but mot in the top echelon of players of all time.
Mate, leave the NBA alone would you.
The GOAT conversation has included Lebron throughout his career, regardless of games and age.
Nowitski not in the top echelon ? 14 years picked for the all star game and is currently 6th NBA all time scorer.
He's not in the GOAT conversation but absolutely in the top echelon.

Yep, Roco gave Pendles a 14 of 20 for "peak"....just because.

There is nothing outrageous or wrong with that top 25, all are deserving, but it gives DBL weighting to a category that is just a made up vibe thing.

I couldn't be bothered going through and capturing all the votes they gave each of the players for each of the categories, but there would be more holes and inconsistencies in them than we see for Player Ratings.

But at least CDog agreed with their method, votes and conclusions....

always admired the way he carried him self on field and off, very Buckley like.
top 20 in the last 20 years is a lock..
Love that he is still going and adding to his legacy.

Harry Mckay once kicked 7.5 vs Freo and was rated the 3rd worst player on the ground. Those rating systems are an absolute crock of baloney.
Yeah, had to fact check this and as usual we have been misinformed - Harry had a Player Rating of 8.8 in that game (Round 3, 2021), which had him as the 22nd ranked player on the ground.

Still unders for his performance, but not as bad as Walshy would want you to believe.

Went back to confirm, 24th best it turns out. My memory must be fading as I fast approach my 30s... The point still remains however, 24th ranked player who kicked 7.5 ...

Player ratings, Champion data etc couldn't tell their heads from their arses.

I would say he is in the Selwood category, one of the clubs all time greats but not enough highlight factor for the outside world to rate him in the top 5. He would be appreciated within the club as much as anyone before or after though by his off field and around the club standards etc. Both brilliant players and leaders, I’d take Selwood the pies would all take Pendelbury if we had a re draft tomorrow.

I am shocked WalshWOAT would tell a bald faced lie like this, thankfully Fadge is here to reveal the truth yet again. How can we ever believe anything these tanker campaigners say?

And even when he tried to correct me, by saying Harry was ranked 24th, after I'd corrected him by saying Harry was 22nd (instead of 3rd last).... he STILL got it wrong.

The correct answer is... 22nd.

As I had originally said when I corrected him.

This is a pretty fair comparison I'd say. Pendles is an absolute class act but he's never had the "showtime" that today's "superstars" need to have. I know Bucks rates him as our greatest (on Buck's own rating system) but I've never rated Pendles in the same class as John Greening or Peter Daicos....they were the creme de creme of our players over my 75 years. Pendles is on plane with Bob Rose, Bucks Wayne Richardson and Swanny for mine.

BUT, in 20 years time I reckon people across the AFL Spectrum will be far more impressed when they reflect on his playing career and how it reflected his coaching career. For just as Leigh Matthews grew in everyone else's estimations once he became a multiple premiership winning coach atop his playing success, (just like Barassi before him) I believe Pendles greatest period of success is still ahead of him.

He is already a brilliant on field coach (this is where he influences games...and its often invisible to opponents and their supporters)....but when he eventually hangs up his boots and takes over an AFL list, his knowledge of game plans and strategy along with his ability to read changes in games will make him an irrepressible coach. He leaves no stone un turned and is an excellent communicator, all in all a wonderful coach in waiting.

Reading a few of the posts in this thread has saddened me a bit as people these days seem hell bent on simply denigrating anyone to "get a response" from other posters. Pendles isn't deserving of denigration, idiots like Jimmy O'Dea or "Jacko" or Carman maybe but Pendles has always been a fair and positive role model for our game. That people want to slag someone who has played this long, at such a high standard, and led his team and his club through tough times, well I simply don't quite know what to say to those people. My grandfather would have told me to "button my lip" or to "stop sooking" if I complained like some in here but maybe that's just showing my age!

I'd rather congratulate a fine player on an exemplary career than drag his name and his legacy down for a simple reaction.

Pendlebury is a Collingwood player. We are duty bound to disrespect him.

But if Collingwood supporters think he is your best player ever, I can respect that.

If I met Pendlebury I would be the first to congratulate him on being the worst best player in any club's history. :)
